Archaeologists just found an underground Roman cult chamber Alongsite 1,100 skeletons beneath a cathedral in England While excavating a small chamber 10 feet below ground, archaeologists in England uncovered a sandstone altar that's believed to have been used in cult worship ceremonies by the Romans some 1,800 years ago. Found face down in the rubble, the altar once stood two feet tall, although only half of it survives today. And though experts aren't sure about the altar's exact purpose, it's believed that chambers like these were used by fertility cults to worship gods like Mithras, Cybele, Bacchus, and Isis. What's more, while digging at this same site, archaeologists also unearthed a burial ground from the Middle Ages filled with more than 1,100 skeletons.
