Witold Pilecki was a Polish soldier and resistance fighter (Armia Krajowa), who gained fame during World War II because he was the only person to have himself voluntarily taken prisoner in Auschwitz. Pilecki wanted to know to what extent the rumors about Auschwitz were true and to possibly organize an uprising. His superiors thought it was too risky at first, but eventually agreed. Under his false name, Tomasz Serafiński, he helped with an uprising in Warsaw, which has led to his arrest in September 1940. While in Auschwitz, he organized the resistance and informed the Allies. He escaped from the camp in 1943 because he was about to be unmasked. . Pilecki also proposed to liberate the camp. The Armia Krajowa explored the camp from the outside and concluded that without allied support, it had no military capability to carry out a successful liberation.
