The Bataan Death March. The Bataan Death March was the infamous and horrible transfer of 60,000–80,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war in April, 1942. In December, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Army invaded the Philippines, for several months they fought against a combined force of American and Filipino defenders. After heavy fighting along with exposure to extreme heat, disease, starvation, and lack of supplies the defenders finally surrendered in early April, 1942. Tens of thousands of soldiers became prisoners of war. The POWs were rounded up and were almost twice as many as the Japanese had estimated, this created an enormous logistical challenge. Since the Japanese lacked vehicles to move all the prisoners to a POW camp(Camp O'Donnel), lieutenant general Masaharu Homma decided that they should move them by marching there, 60-69.6mi.(96.6-112.0 km) in the tropical heat.
