In 1955, 14-year-old Emmett Till was abducted, tortured, killed, and dumped in the Tallahatchie River in Mississippi for supposedly flirting with a white woman by the name of Carolyn Bryant. Till’s killers were Roy Bryant (Carolyn’s husband) and his half-brother J.W. Milam. Both men were acquitted of the crime by an all-white jury.
