The rapid Danish surrender (after six hours) is considered one of the fastest capitulations of all time in military history. The attack was part of Operation Weserübung. In order to conquer Norway, the Germans had to control the airports at Aalborg in North Jutland. An additional advantage was the protection of Northern Germany against Allied air raids. The Oberkommando der Wehrmacht planned a combined attack on Denmark to conquer the country as soon as possible; with air raids on Aalborg airports, a surprise attack by infantry and naval units on Copenhagen, combined with the overland attack on Jutland.
