After appearing in small advertisements throughout her childhood, Shields landed a major photoshoot for Playboy's "Sugar and Spice" magazine at the age of 10. Photographer Gary Gross paid her $450 to pose nude in a bathtub, and two of the images were printed in the publication. Shields' mother, Teri, approved of the shoot at the time, but she sued Gross for attempting to sell the photos again several years later. In court, Gross' attorney described young Shields as "a young vamp and a harlot, a seasoned sexual veteran, a provocative child-woman, an erotic and sensual sex symbol, the Lolita of her generation."
