This giant flying reptile was the largest pterosaur to ever soar over ancient Australia — and researchers just reconstructed its fearsome form from a piece of jawbone discovered in 2011. The creature is called Thapunngaka shawi, combining two Indigenous Wanamara words and the last name of the man who found the original fragment into a name that means “Shaw’s spear mouth.” Thapunngaka shawi had a three-foot-long skull with two huge bony crests on its upper and lower jaws that likely helped make it more aerodynamic and avoid making noise when it swooped in to snatch up its prey.
