The man in the bog. The Grauballe Man is one of the most well preserved bog bodies in the world. It was discovered on Jutland, in Denmark, 1952. The body underwent a detailed investigation before it was preserved for the future. The man dates back to the 4th - 3rd century BC and he is thought to have been between 30-35 years old at the time of his death. His hair appears reddish in colour due to the bog and his hands were so perfectly preserved that his fingerprints were successfully taken. Analisys of his last meal showed a porridge-based meal made from cereals, vegetables, and herbs. Traces of ergot could also be seen, a fungus that occurs naturally. When consumed it can cause hallucinations, muscle spasms, and fever, as it contains lysergic acid. This indicates that he may have been drugged prior to his death.
