A Highland New Guinean is shocked to see a white person for the first time in his life. Before 1930, Highlanders though they were the only living person in the world
Guinea. They stumbled upon the Highland New Guineans, who lived on the mountains and were
completely isolated. You can learn more about this in a documentary film called 'First Contact'. The authors of the documentary interviewed the people who participated in that first meeting. One of the Papuans interviewed says: "At first, when we saw them all pale, we thought they were the spirits of our ancestors, who had come from the beyond to bring us a message. One day we saw one of them go to shit; there we realized that they were not spirits, but normal people, like us"..]
Additional Interesting Story:
In WW2, an American plane was doing a
sightseeing run through this same valley, and crashed. Three people survived, and climbed down the mountain. A rescue squad was dropped in, as 2 of 3 were seriously wounded, and the Americans didn't know if the locals were friendly or not. For the locals in this part of the valley, it was also their first contact. At one point, the locals were pulling at the clothing of the Americans, they thought their uniforms were a kind of
removable skin. They kept touching around the soldiers’ groin areas. The Captain in charge of the squad misunderstood, and thought the locals perhaps were confusing their gender (one of the crash survivors was a woman). Not wanting there to be any
doubt, he ordered his squad to drop their pants and show their private parts. This greatly embarrassed the
locals, who would never remove their penis gourds in public.
