Have you ever heard the tale of the Jungle Book? You know, the stories are based on a boy living in the Indian forest being raised by wild animals, such as a bear, monkeys, and a black panther. There’s even a Disney movie based on this story.
Well, in 1987, a five-year-old bedraggled boy was discovered living among the monkeys near Tugela River in the wilds of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Some people called him the real-life Mowgli.
This wild child showed only animal-like behavior. He didn’t know how to talk, he walked on all fours, and he liked climbing trees and eating fruits, especially bananas. He didn’t show any signs of civilization. Want to know his story?
The theory scientists used to explain the story of this feral child is that his birth mother abandoned him in the bush when he was just an infant. He was then raised by monkeys until Sundumbili residents saw him.
He was immediately taken to the Ethel Mthiyane Orphanage and was named ‘Saturday Mthiyane’ for the day he was found. “He was very violent during his first days here”, said Ethel Mthiyane, founder and head of the Orphanage.
Saturday didn’t understand the rules of the civilized world. He broke everything he was given, like kitchen utensils. He would steal raw meat from the fridge and eat it. And he would get in and out through windows. He didn’t play with other kids, instead, he used to beat them and he would often whoop at other children.
He was unable to communicate with others. Ethel, the woman who ran a home for disabled and mentally impaired children, took the boy in. However, she expressed to the press months later she was unable to afford the cost of a proper assessment for Saturday. A special assessment was necessary to determine if Saturday had a permanent disability or could be helped with specialized treatment.
Saturday lived up to 18 years more from when he was found. Unfortunately, Saturday Mthiyane died in a fire in 2005.
“It is a matter of regret that Saturday lived a tragic life to his end, perhaps he would have been happier and better off living his life out in the bush, in the lap of nature”, said Ethel when she found out about the boy’s death.
