Inside The Mystery Of Jim Morrison’s Death And The Disturbing Theories That Surround It

Officially, Jim Morrison died of heart failure after he had a bad reaction to heroin while in Paris in 1971. Found unresponsive in the bathtub by his girlfriend Pamela Courson, Morrison's death was a tragic end to a longtime struggle with addiction. But not everyone buys the official story.
From whispers that he died in the bathroom of a notorious nightclub to rumors that he faked his own death, Morrison's demise has been the subject of numerous conspiracy theories. But perhaps most ominously, some people have accused his girlfriend of playing a role in his death, especially since Courson was the sole heir in his will. And while Courson was interviewed by the police shortly after Morrison's body was found, the authorities apparently took her story at face value — and no autopsy was ever performed.

Jim Morrison’s death shocked the world in 1971. Eerily, it’s still not exactly clear how Jim Morrison died.

There, Morrison seemed to find peace. He wrote every day. To friends, Morrison appeared happy and healthy. And in photos taken during his final days alive, he looked trim and fit. And so it came as a shock to most when Morrison died suddenly on July 3rd. But not everyone was surprised.

While in Paris, Morrison and Courson had apparently indulged in old habits. They also frequented Parisian nightclubs like Rock’n’Roll Circus. And eerily, some claim that Morrison actually died at that very same club rather than his apartment — and that a massive cover-up followed for decades.

This is the story of Jim Morrison’s death — both the official account and what witnesses claim actually happened.

The Years Leading Up To Jim Morrison’s Death

Born on December 8, 1943, Jim Morrison seemed an unlikely character to become a rock star. The son of a future U.S. Navy Rear Admiral, Morrison grew up in a strict household. But it didn’t take long for him to rebel.

Although he kept his grades up and liked to read and write, Morrison also experimented with alcohol at a young age. When he graduated high school, he reluctantly went to college at UCLA and only stuck around to graduate because he wanted to avoid getting drafted to fight in the Vietnam War.

But once Morrison was free in the world, he turned to music. He spent his days after graduation in 1965 writing lyrics, doing drugs, and hanging out in the California sunshine. He also assembled a band with three others that they called The Doors, inspired by a William Blake quote: “There are things that are known and things that are unknown; in between are doors.”

That same year, he also met Pamela Courson, who would become his longtime girlfriend and muse. Morrison called her his “cosmic partner.”

Meanwhile, Morrison’s father disapproved of his career path. He urged his son to “give up any idea of singing or any connection with a music group because of what I consider to be a complete lack of talent in this direction.”

But just two years after the band formed, they released their first hit record — “Light My Fire” — which shot to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. From there, the Doors seemed practically unstoppable. They released album after album, hit after hit, and drove rock ‘n’ roll fans into a frenzy.

Though Morrison enjoyed many of the perks of being a rock star — especially the attention from countless women — he also struggled with his newfound fame. He had always been a heavy drinker, but he began to hit the bottle more and more frequently. And he also indulged in a variety of drugs.

Everything came to a head for Morrison after he was charged with exposing himself during a Florida concert in 1969. As he sat through his trial in 1970, Morrison knew he needed a change. In one of the notebooks he carried around, he jotted down a note: “The joy of performing has ended.”

Soon after he was released on bond, Morrison left The Doors. He and Courson then moved to Paris, hoping for a reprieve. But sadly, Jim Morrison’s death was just around the corner — and he would never make it back home.

In Paris, Jim Morrison and Pamela Courson rented an apartment at 17 rue Beautreillis near the Seine River. They spent their days strolling around their adopted city. Morrison wrote nearly every day. And, during the night, the couple enjoyed exploring the chic world of Parisian nightlife.

Although Morrison had gained some weight, the last photos of him taken alive show a fit young man. He looked happy and at peace. The time off from his band — and the demands of fame — seemed to have done him good.

But everything changed on July 3, 1971. In the official account of Jim Morrison’s death scene, Pamela Courson found her boyfriend dead in the bathtub of the apartment that they shared in the city.

She called for help, but it was already too late. The French police naturally had some questions — especially since Morrison was just 27 years old — and suspected drugs. But Courson maintained they had merely gone to dinner and a movie and listened to music at home before going to bed.

She said Morrison woke up ill in the middle of the night and took a hot bath while she continued sleeping. It was soon declared that Morrison had died of heart failure, thought to be brought on by a heroin overdose.

With no autopsy performed, Courson’s story was taken at face value. And when she herself died three years later — of a heroin overdose — it seemed that any other information about Jim Morrison’s death had died with her.

But in recent years, some notable figures of the Parisian nightlife scene have told their own version of the story.

How Did Jim Morrison Die?

In 2007, a former New York Times journalist named Sam Bernett — who had once managed the Rock’n’Roll Circus club in Paris — came forward with an alarming story. In Bernett’s telling, Jim Morrison did not die in a bathtub.

Instead, his book The End: Jim Morrison claims that The Doors frontman actually died in a toilet stall at Rock’n’Roll Circus. While in Paris, Morrison had certainly spent countless nights at the venue, often alongside Courson. But on July 3, 1971, Bernett allegedly saw him meeting up with two drug dealers before he headed to the bathroom around 2 a.m.

When Morrison failed to reemerge, Bernett had a bouncer kick the door down, only to find him unconscious. Bernett alerted a doctor — a regular at the bar — who confirmed Morrison was dead.

“The flamboyant singer of ‘The Doors,’ the beautiful California boy, had become an inert lump crumpled in the toilet of a nightclub,” wrote Bernett. “When we found him dead, he had a little foam on his nose, and some blood too, and the doctor said, ‘That must be an overdose of heroin.'”

As shocking as that might seem, Bernett isn’t the only person to tell this story. Writer and photographer Patrick Chauvel recalled many of the same things. He was tending bar that night and suddenly found himself helping carry Morrison up a staircase. With no ambulance called, Chauvel believed Morrison had died already or passed out from various substances.

“I think he was already dead,” said Chauvel. “I don’t know. It was a long time ago, and weren’t drinking only water.”

Bernett maintains that the two drug dealers at the scene insisted that Morrison had just “fainted.” While Bernett wanted to call an ambulance, he was soon warned by his boss to stay silent. Ultimately, he believes that the drug dealers carried Morrison’s body outside and drove him home — dumping him into the tub as Courson slept.

A cop trying to pin down a striker during the RCA Victor (Consumer electronics company) strike at Camden, New Jersey, USA, 2 July 1936.

A cop trying to pin down a striker during the RCA Victor (Consumer electronics company) strike at Camden, New Jersey, USA, 2 July 1936. Was unable to find a historical retelling of events but by looking at some articles from the time I was able to piece some things together from Time and the New York Post. It appears the main demands by the strikers was an abolition of RCA's company union (a worker organization which is dominated or unduly influenced by an employer, and is therefore not an independent trade union), and a 20% wage increase. Things started off peacefully with the strikers picketing the plant and the strikers and the RCA trying to drown out each other's music that was being played on loudspeaker. RCA then started to employ strikebreakers (scabs) and then things appeared to have escalated from there. With strikers accused of “jabbing girl employees with pins” and hurling eggs filled with paint and the scabs were accused of throwing red pepper, hot metal and “light ...

How to Get Over A Relationship

When two people get into a relationship, they look towards a happy future together. But what happens if they break up? Sadness, anger, bitterness, stress, and heartache. Learning to let go is necessary because life will go on with or without your partner. Moving on is not easy, but it is possible. This article provides a number of steps to help you move forward and successfully get over a relationship. 1. Understand your own feelings. Denial doesn’t solve anything. Ignored emotions will only make you calloused and afraid. - If you need to cry, do so. Crying clears your mind and helps you vent your emotions. Repression never helps anyone, so be honest about your ever-changing feelings. - If you don't feel like crying, maybe head to the gym and find an available punching bag or go for a long, hard run. Vent your anger and hurt with someone close to you. Try to avoid doing something you would regret; just remember the person you are venting to is just trying to help. 2. ...

In 1330, Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent, son of King Edward I of England and father of the “scandalous” Joan of Kent,

In 1330, Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent, son of King Edward I of England and father of the “scandalous” Joan of Kent, was executed for treason at Winchester Castle. Edmund's plans to free his imprisoned half-brother, the deposed King Edward II, had been uncovered by Roger Mortimer, whose agents had intercepted a letter written by Edmund's wife, Margaret Wake.  When Edmund was condemned to death, in an act of desperation, he began begging his nephew, King Edward III, to spare his life. He claimed he'd do anything, even “walk all the way to London with a noose round his neck” to atone for his actions. But Roger Mortimer had seen to it that there would be nothing Edward could do to save his uncle. Edmund's executioner had backed out, refusing to be responsible for the murder of man who was trying to help his brother and none of the assembled men-at-arms volunteered in his absence, neither did their captains. Hours passed before someone was found to remove Edmund...

An animal-rights activist is urging people not to kill mosquitoes, but instead to let the insects bite them

An animal-rights activist is urging people not to kill mosquitoes, but instead to let the insects bite them. Aymeric Caron, who is also a French TV presenter, says the insects suck human blood to obtain protein for their eggs and should not be swatted in the prcoess. He said that killing mosquitoes is “embarrassing for anti-specists who realise they are being attacked by a mother trying to nourish her children,” according to the Independent . Anti-specists are people who argue that all species should be treated equally. Mr Caron, who describes himself as an anti-specist, says he always allows himself to be bitten by mosquitoes, except in Africa, where there is a risk of catching malaria. In a video, he said: “One can consider that a blood donation from time to time to an insect who is only trying to nourish her children is not a drama.” But British animal protection workers have said his comments are “a step too far” and “an unhelpful distraction”. Caron also said it was better to use ...

Lina Medina, the youngest confirmed mother in medical history, 1939

Lina Medina is the world’s youngest documented mother in medical history. At the time of delivery, she was 5 years, 7 months, and 17 days old. In 1933, Lina Medina was born in Ticrapo, Peru. At the age of five years, Lina was brought to the hospital by her parents who complained of abdominal extreme growth. The girl’s parents initially thought their daughter was suffering from a massive abdominal tumor, but after being examined by doctors in Pisco, Peru, they discovered she was seven months pregnant. Dr. Geraldo Lozada became Lina’s attending doctor, fully taking over the case. Dr. Lozada took Lina to a more advanced hospital in Lima to confirm the pregnancy diagnosis. The diagnosis was confirmed. Lina was born with a rare condition called “precocious puberty”. Precocious puberty is basically the early onset of sexual development. Most girls begin experiencing puberty around the age of ten (boys usually start a little later, around the ages of 11 or 12). Lina had experienced her first ...

In 1949, a bear and a man fought an official boxing match, in case you were wondering, the bear won

In 1949, a bear and a man fought an official boxing match, in case you were wondering, the bear won byondfacts Have you ever heard of an official boxing match between a man and a bear? Well, it may sound like a tall tale, but it actually happened in 1949! The match took place in a small town in Alaska, where a local promoter decided to pit a boxer against a bear. The bear, named "Terrible Ted," had been trained to stand on its hind legs and box with human opponents, and had already defeated several fighters in previous matches. The unlucky human opponent for the day was a man named Gordon "Two-Ton" Roxburgh. The fight took place in a small ring, with Roxburgh wearing boxing gloves and the bear wearing a muzzle for safety reasons. Despite his size and experience as a boxer, Roxburgh was no match for the bear. The fight lasted only a few minutes, with the bear easily knocking down Roxburgh multiple times before the match was stopped. The fight generated a lot of contr...
