Solved Mysteries: The Slaying of Sirkka-Liisa Valjus
In 1963, a woman named sirkka Liisa Waljus was strangled in her apartment. The killer had used a lamp cord to murder her. The police found a bloody footprint left by the killer in the apartment but alas, were never able to solve the killing and it remains a mystery to this day
on Rauhankatu in the afternoon of July 23, 1963. The police's initial investigations revealed that after a fierce and bloody struggle, she had been strangled to death with an electric cord the previous night around two or three.
The apartment was located on the D-staircase of Rauhankatu 19. The residents of the lower floor had heard noise and the sounds of fighting from there at the mentioned time, but did not pay special attention to it, because the apartment was often noisy at night. The body was found by Saara Nieminen, a friend who came to visit the apartment.
Waljus had spent his last evening in a restaurant in Valencia, accompanied by a large, over 180 centimeter man who seemed like a foreigner. The couple had left the restaurant around half past one.
The man's identifications were obtained from the restaurant's staff and customers, as well as from the rental car driver, who thought the man was a foreigner who knew a little Finnish.
At first, the police suspected that Waljus's companion and possible murderer was a Dutch sailor matching the characteristics, who belonged to the crew of the m/s Chokland, but the ship had already left Turku. However, the police already announced on July 27 that the wanted man is not part of the crew of this ship.
After this, the police took on the arduous task of investigating the crews of all 30 ships that were in the port of Turku when the murder took place. It was later reported to Interpol about the 17 ships reported.
It was published in Turku Sanomi on August 17. a drawing made by the magazine of a possible murderer based on the description of seven witnesses. The big man's best features were his baby face and eye-catching thick straight hair.
By the end of August, with the help of Interpol, only four crews had been checked, and no wanted persons were found. Waljus' supposed "fiancé" was also searched for in vain. He too could have been a murderer who perhaps saw the foreigner leave his "bride".
Waljus's case went down in criminal history as an unsolved bloodbath for the time being. About 40 years after the murder, that case made headlines again, mainly due to the works of Matti Paloaro and Jorma Palo.
On the basis of the writings, they began to investigate whether the vague German-born sneaker Hans Assmann, who knew Waljus, was also behind this and other unsolved bloodworks of that time.
The most famous of them were the murders of Kyllikki Saari (1953) and Elli Immo (1955 ) and the bloodshed of Tulilahti (1959) and Bodominjärvi (1960). The investigation has not changed the perception that those bloody crimes are still unsolved.
In the early morning of July 26, 1963, a powerful earthquake destroyed a significant part of Skopje, the capital of Yugoslavia's Macedonia. More than 1,000 people died in the disaster, thousands were injured and even a couple of hundred thousand people were left homeless.
Emergency aid was sent from 78 countries. In Finland, SPR took immediate relief measures and started collecting donations from the public. The Finnish state and industry donated 18 wooden houses to the city, which were erected along Suomikatu.
In Finland, on those days, the southern and southwestern sea areas were harvested on 21.7. traces of a raging strong storm, sometimes up to 11 Beaufort.
As many as 37 boat crews, with a total of 105 people, went missing in the Gulf of Finland. 23.7. by the time the last missing boats were found. Only one boat's crew of two was suspected to have drowned.
In the port of Naantali, the storm tormented and somewhat damaged the visiting Svenska Kryssarklubben's fleet on the 40th anniversary sailing. It included about 60 vessels, half of which were sailboats and the other half motorboats.
The ships were anchored on the city shore, but the storm scattered them into quite a chaos. The ships were towed and assisted for a whole day to the shore of Kailo island and to the pier of Kultaranta.
