22 year old Jordan Worth was jailed for 7 years in April 2018 for torturing her boyfriend over a 9 month period. She had controlled every aspect of Alex Skeel’s life.
The couple met when they were both 16 years old and eventually moved in together, it was around this time that the controlling behaviour began. The abuse started off as psychological with Worth deciding which clothes in which colours Skeel could wear, she then began isolating him from his family, sending messages from his phone telling them not to contact him. Next she broke his phone and took control of his social media accounts. She also told Skeel that his grandfather had died, which was not true, then berated him for being upset by the news.
It took around 18 months for the psychological abuse to turn physical and started with her sleeping with a glass bottle beside her bed, she would accuse him of doing things with other girls, then wait until he fell asleep and hit him on the head with the bottle. Soon Skeel was banned from sleeping in bed and was made to sleep on the floor. He was starved and lost 4 stone in weight, leaving him weak. She even took his wallet so he had no money or identification.
On one occasion she wrapped the cord of a laptop charger around her wrist and swung the metal plug end at his head, as blood poured from the wound and he begged her for help she laughed and walked away saying “Why don’t you just go and die? No one cares about you."
She also you used a hammer, wardrobe poles, bits of wardrobe, a football pole snapped in half, knives and boiling water to torture him. Skeel was controlled, beaten, stabbed, starved and tortured, leaving him with severed tendons, fluid on the brain and burns. She wouldn’t let him get medical treatment for any of the injuries she inflicted on him.
The couples neighbours often heard them arguing and what sounded like things being thrown. They also saw the Skeel with black eyes, limping and with his arm in sling.
In June 2017 neighbours called police to the couple's home and the ambulance crew found Skeel with injuries to his hand and burns to arms and legs. They also found more wounds across his body.
Worth plead guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour in an intimate relationship, wounding with intent and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. She has also been made the subject of a restraining order which prevents her from contacting Skeel for an indefinite period.
When asked why he stayed with Worth, Skeel said “We had two kids together and I just kept hoping that something would change. The children were babies, but, of course, they must have seen what was happening and, while she didn’t hurt them directly, my fear was always that if I left, she’d turn her abuse on them. So I stayed.”
He is now an Ambassador for domestic violence charity The ManKind Initiative.
