The Bataan Death March.

The Bataan Death March was the infamous and horrible transfer of 60,000–80,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war in April, 1942.

In December, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Army invaded the Philippines, for several months they fought against a combined force of American and Filipino defenders.

After heavy fighting along with exposure to extreme heat, disease, starvation, and lack of supplies the defenders finally surrendered in early April, 1942. Tens of thousands of soldiers became prisoners of war.

The POWs were rounded up and were almost twice as many as the Japanese had estimated, this

created an enormous logistical challenge.

Since the Japanese lacked vehicles to move all the prisoners to a POW camp(Camp O'Donnel), lieutenant general Masaharu Homma

decided that they should move them by marching there, 60-69.6mi.(96.6-112.0 km) in the tropical heat.

The march mainly started in Mariveles, on the southern tip of the Bataan Peninsula. It lasted 5 to 10 days, depending on where the prisoner joined. With little food or water, and brutal treatment, the prisoners began to die like flies. They were beaten, shot, bayoneted, and in many cases, beheaded. Some were stabbed or beaten at random if they walked too slow while others were shot if they asked for water. The march continued to San Fernando, here they were taken by train in unsanitary boxcars to Capas.

Upon arrival at the Capas train station, the prisoners were forced to walk the final 9mi.(14km) to Camp O'Donnell, a former Philippine army training centre used by the Japanese military to intern prisoners.

The exact numbers of prisoners who died are unknown. Between 2,500–10,000 Filipino and 500–650 American prisoners died from thirst, wounds, disease, and their captors’ savage mistreatment during the march, before reaching the camp.

Then another 20,000 Filipinos and 1,500 Americans died during their time in the camp.

After the war, Homma was convicted of war crimes. He was sentenced to death and executed in early 1946.
