Today in history, the Battle of Denmark began
The Battle of Denmark was a series of battles that followed the German invasion of Denmark on 9 April 1940. The rapid Danish surrender (after six hours) is considered one of the fastest capitulations of all time in military history.
The attack was part of Operation Weserübung. In order to conquer Norway, the Germans had to control the airports at Aalborg in North Jutland. An additional advantage was the protection of Northern Germany against Allied air raids.
The Oberkommando der Wehrmacht planned a combined attack on Denmark to conquer the country as soon as possible; with air raids on Aalborg airports, a surprise attack by infantry and naval units on Copenhagen, combined with the overland attack on Jutland.
Although the Danish Army had been warned of a German attack, its government denied that its army was preparing and building defensive positions as not to provoke the Germans. To counteract an invasion, only small and divided units of the Border Guard and units of the Jutland Division were available.
The Danish border was violated at 4.15 a.m. at Sæd, Rens, Padborg and Kruså. The Kriegsmarine simultaneously landed troops at Lillebælt, cutting off the Danish troops at the border and putting them out of action. The first encounter between the Danish Army and German troops was at Lundtoftebjerg, where a Danish armed platoon took on two armored personnel carriers and three motorcycles. When the German vanguard encountered another roadblock at Hokkerup, it was defended by 34 Danish soldiers. The Danes put three German armored cars out of action, and the Germans were forced to withdraw. But still, the Germans managed to surround and capture the Danish unit, and soon Bjergskov, Bredevad and Haderslev were taken.
Haderslev was defended by a garrison of 225 men from the Jutland Division who defended the barracks and the road towards it. After battles in the suburbs, the capitulation message arrived from Copenhagen. This did not reach the defenders of the barracks in Haderslev, and when the Germans moved into the city, further fighting ensued.
