The man in the bog. 

The Grauballe Man is one 

of the most well preserved bog bodies in the world. It was discovered on Jutland, in Denmark, 1952.

The body underwent a detailed investigation before it was preserved for the future. 

The man dates back to the 4th - 3rd century BC and he is thought to have been between 30-35 years old at the time of his death. His hair appears reddish in colour due to the bog and his hands were so perfectly preserved that his fingerprints were successfully taken. 

Analisys of his last meal showed a porridge-based meal made from cereals, vegetables, and herbs. Traces of ergot could also be seen, a fungus that occurs naturally. When consumed it can cause hallucinations, muscle spasms, and fever, as it contains lysergic acid. This indicates that he may have been drugged prior to his death. 

He is thought to have been a sacrifice in some kind of ritual. His face was very distorted when they found him, this is primarily due to the fact that he was killed by having his throat cut from ear to ear.

After discovery, the body was preserved by tanning to turn it into leather, the bog had actually already started to tan the body.

The best way to preserve him therefore, was to complete this tanning process. An artificial peat bog was created in a large box filled with oak bark and water, the body would stay in this bath for 18 months before it was officially turned into leather.

We see the face of a man that lived so long ago. A time when the Roman Empire was growing and had yet to reach it peak, Cleopatra had not yet been born, and it would take another thousand years until the Vikings began to sail across the oceans and for the crusades to begin. During all of these years and historical happenings he's been lying there, waiting to see the light again. 

The body is now on display at the Moesgaard Museum near Aarhus.
