Although some Girls don't “become” lesbians. They just are, from birth. Though, at first, they may not realise it because of the society forcing straight relationships down everyone's throat.
A small child is very impressionable. Since most relationships around them are between a male and female, they begin to think that it is the ideal relationship. So, naturally, they try to fit in. Until they can't. Then they start having negative thoughts about themselves, like why are they different? Why can't they be normal, like everyone else? etc.
Then, slowly, they start accepting themselves for who they are. They are proud of themselves. They start loving themselves and living the truth.
When they come out, most people think that they suddenly became lesbians because they were trying to fit in. But, that was only an act.
They can't overcome it. Why would they want to change something so integral to their identity? It is who they are, and it is completely abnormal.
Lesbians are newer than Gays. And what i think is that population of Lesbians is still to increasing. I have talked to many girls about same and on the basis of that i am writing this answer. There are several reason for more girls joining lesbian club daily.
1. In most parts of the world sex is still a taboo. And it's felt quite awkward to spent time with opposite sex. From teenage we distinguished boys and girls. One is less allowed to spent time with opposite sex. This less availability of opposite sex in desired time is a contributing factor.
2. Porn: yes, porn create the fantasies of lesbian, gay, gangbang and violent type of sex to almost everyone. Most of people gets the idea of lesbian or gay sex by watching porn only. So, Porn industry is contributing a lot.
3. Security: Most of girls feel more secure with other girl instead of a boy. They fear that a boy can expose her, which can leave her in trouble.No one bother much if a girl is hanging out with other girl. She can sleep with her and no one will have a suspecting eye on them.
4. Availability: Girls are available to a girl almost anytime & anywhere. It can be your PG, Hostels, washrooms.. etc. She can easily come to her home and no one will have objection. Guess what if a guy come to you in your bedroom like that!!!
5. Misguided feminism: I have seen some girls, they just hate boys without any reason. They are just behave hypocritically. They feel opposite gender like enemies. Just to get an independent feeling they encourage girl clubs.
