Inside California Alligator Farm where kids could ride and play with alligators, 1920s

Between 1907 and 1953, patrons of Los Angeles' California Alligator Farm mingled freely with trained gators — and sometimes even ate lunch with them.

In 1907, Joseph “Alligator Joe” Campbell and Francis Victor Earnest Sr. relocated an alligator farm in Hot Springs, Arkansas, to a Los Angeles location adjacent to the Selig Zoo and Motion Picture Studio in Los Angeles. The Alligator farm rented reptiles to the motion picture industry.

The farm moved to Buena Park in Orange County in May 1953 and continued to operate as California Alligator Farm until 1984, when its lease was not renewed

Four buildings on the farm contained more than 100 displays of snakes and lizards from throughout the world. The farm contained snapping turtles, giant tortoises, and more than 1,000 specimens in what was called the largest reptile collection in the world.

The original admission was just 25 cents, visitors could peruse alligator handbags in the gift shop, watch a trained gator slide down a 16-foot chute, or take pictures of their children riding atop the animals. At one point, the alligator park was one of Los Angeles’s most popular tourist attractions.

A promotional brochure for the Farm claimed: “Here are to be seen hundreds of alligators of all sizes, from little babies, hardly the size of a lizard, up to huge monsters, 500 years old or more.” This is inaccurate, as an American alligator will expire at around 50 years of age.

The alligators were segregated according to size in a series of twenty ponds. They would range in size from just a few inches up to thirteen feet.

A 1910 article by Arthur Inkersley in Overland Monthly describes how the alligators were captured, how the eggs were incubated, and even how the animals exercised.

“With a strong line and a big steel nook baited with pork, it is as easy to catch an alligator as to catch a trout with a minnow,” Inkersley wrote, “but you must know what to do with your alligator when you have caught him.”

Despite signs admonishing visitors not to “throw stones at the alligators, spit on, punch or molest them in any way,” adults and children regularly handled alligators at the farm. Some were even stolen by college pranksters.

These pictures taken on the Los Angeles Alligator Farm show people interacting with the alligators in all sorts of ways. Young children can be seen playing with baby gators or watching them at a very close distance.

Visitors could even enjoy alligator rides, where children could sit in a specially made saddle and ride the gators around in the ponds. One of the highlights of the park was watching the keepers lure the alligators up a set of stairs before they cruised down a 16-foot slide into a pool of water.

The gators became a bit of a neighborhood nuisance with their loud nocturnal calls. Moreover, when rain flooded the nearby reservoir, the water overflowed into the farm giving the alligators the chance to make repeated forays into neighborhood canals, backyards, and occasionally swimming pools.

By the 1950s, the zoo moved to Buena Park, but the novelty had worn off. The attraction was shut down in 1984 after attendance dropped below 50,000 persons annually (and the lease was not renewed). The alligators were sold to a private estate in Florida.

Douala: Shocking story of school girl raped on way back home

Douala: Shocking story of school girl raped on way back home A man whose name we did not immediately get, is in police custody at the 17th Police District, Douala, following accusations of rape. The suspect, supposedly a bike rider, is said to have raped a minor who had boarded his bike on her way back from school on Saturday. “I was coming back from school on Saturday, I was looking for a bike to go back home. One of the bike riders called me and asked where I was going, I said PK21. When we reached PK17, he said at PK20, the authorities had blocked the road because of construction works” the victim explained. She continued, pointing out that “he also said since morning, he had been transporting people from PK14 passing through PK19 before reaching PK21”. “We took an entrance…right inside there were no more houses. And that’s where he asked me to go down because he wanted to urinate.” The alleged rapist is reported to have threatened his victim with a cutlass when she tried to resist....

It’s been 20 years since the 9/11. Despite an estimated 46 billion connected devices worldwide, but some experts believe today’s technology leaves us more susceptible to terrorism. Shocking!!! Wife Poisons Husband To Death Over Seeing Photo Of A Woman In His Phone

A Woman identified as Matilda and her sister, have both been arrested for allegedly k*lling a businessman, Emem Etim Marley in Ajah, Lagos. It was gathered that Matilda had found another woman’s picture on her husband’s phone and suspected him of infidelity. She allegedly connived with her sister to poison him on Sunday, Aug 1. “The neighbors were knocking profusely on their door after hearing Emem scream for help. Matilda and her sister had locked him up and absconded to their father’s house. The door was forced open and the neighbors found the victim lying d*ad on the floor. It’s sad that this happened because they got married 8-months ago and there’s nothing Emem hasn’t done for his wife to make her happy. He recently bought her a car and opened a store for her business. According to a relative, Matilda had sold the victim’s cars and hidden his land documents before she committed the crime. At the police station, she claims that her husband drank a poisonous substance of his own vol...

How I Missed My Future Husband” – Nigerian Lady (Photo)

I checked in for my flight that cold misty morning… After surviving a break failure… (story for another day) It was drizzling. This raining season must have been heart broken and is taking out its anger on mankind. I wanted to wear something simple, like a very short skirt and sheer top but changed my mind and wore an up and down Ankara peplon top and straight trousers. I even had a Jean jacket in my bag, just incase. The weather ain’t no body’s Friend. After checking in my luggage, I made my way to the departure lounge, with my ticket and ID card in hand. I sat down and brought out my phone to call mum. A few minutes later, I was done with the call. I looked up and saw this guy. Heigod! Usually, I don’t stare at people, no matter how handsome, fine, or gorgeous you are. I look once or twice and look away. Always. But this time, I stared. He had just passed the annoying security check, where you had to remove jewelries and shoes. He wore a black trouser, a light blue polo and a black j...

True Story; My Experience At First Bank Automated Machine Stand

Yesterday, I went to First Bank to use the ATM I got there and looked around and joined the long queue. A young lady came to meet me and asked how much I wanted to withdraw.   She said she over withdrew money; She was supposed to withdraw 3k but mistakenly pressed 30k. She will give me 20k cash, I will transfer it to her account. This is what shocked me; I have been standing on the queue for approximately 5mins and I never saw this Lady around that ATM, she wasn't on the queue, she never made any withdrawal. Which ATM did she use in getting the 30k?  I told her I will wait for my turn, she left my side, I asked the man in my front, did you see this lady around? I wanted to point her but the Lady had disappeared, I didn't see her again.  I told the man what she said and he laughed and said it is an old logic. They come with fake naira notes claiming they mistakenly pressed and withdraw the wrong amount  When you are in a hurry to leave the long queue, you transfer the...

This 17 years old was jailed for murdering his entire family because he couldn't go to prom ---- But did he actually do it?

This 17 years old was jailed for murdering his entire family because he couldn't go to prom ---- But did he actually do it? Jeff Pelley was just 17 when he allegedly murdered his stepmom, his dad, and his two little sisters after being grounded on prom night for stealing CDs from a neighbor's house in 1989 — but did he really do it? Investigators settled on Pelley as their number one suspect when they learned that his father had grounded him for the burglary and forbidden him from attending prom without his supervision. Police also found the family’s shotgun missing but no signs of a break in, suggesting that the murderer either entered from a bedroom or was otherwise close to the family. Though the initial case against Pelley was thin with no forensic evidence, murder weapon, or witnesses to hold him responsible, Pelley was nonetheless found guilty in a trial nearly two decades later. He remains behind bars to this day. Go inside the maddening case of Jeff Pelley by visitin...
