Inside California Alligator Farm where kids could ride and play with alligators, 1920s

Between 1907 and 1953, patrons of Los Angeles' California Alligator Farm mingled freely with trained gators — and sometimes even ate lunch with them.

In 1907, Joseph “Alligator Joe” Campbell and Francis Victor Earnest Sr. relocated an alligator farm in Hot Springs, Arkansas, to a Los Angeles location adjacent to the Selig Zoo and Motion Picture Studio in Los Angeles. The Alligator farm rented reptiles to the motion picture industry.

The farm moved to Buena Park in Orange County in May 1953 and continued to operate as California Alligator Farm until 1984, when its lease was not renewed

Four buildings on the farm contained more than 100 displays of snakes and lizards from throughout the world. The farm contained snapping turtles, giant tortoises, and more than 1,000 specimens in what was called the largest reptile collection in the world.

The original admission was just 25 cents, visitors could peruse alligator handbags in the gift shop, watch a trained gator slide down a 16-foot chute, or take pictures of their children riding atop the animals. At one point, the alligator park was one of Los Angeles’s most popular tourist attractions.

A promotional brochure for the Farm claimed: “Here are to be seen hundreds of alligators of all sizes, from little babies, hardly the size of a lizard, up to huge monsters, 500 years old or more.” This is inaccurate, as an American alligator will expire at around 50 years of age.

The alligators were segregated according to size in a series of twenty ponds. They would range in size from just a few inches up to thirteen feet.

A 1910 article by Arthur Inkersley in Overland Monthly describes how the alligators were captured, how the eggs were incubated, and even how the animals exercised.

“With a strong line and a big steel nook baited with pork, it is as easy to catch an alligator as to catch a trout with a minnow,” Inkersley wrote, “but you must know what to do with your alligator when you have caught him.”

Despite signs admonishing visitors not to “throw stones at the alligators, spit on, punch or molest them in any way,” adults and children regularly handled alligators at the farm. Some were even stolen by college pranksters.

These pictures taken on the Los Angeles Alligator Farm show people interacting with the alligators in all sorts of ways. Young children can be seen playing with baby gators or watching them at a very close distance.

Visitors could even enjoy alligator rides, where children could sit in a specially made saddle and ride the gators around in the ponds. One of the highlights of the park was watching the keepers lure the alligators up a set of stairs before they cruised down a 16-foot slide into a pool of water.

The gators became a bit of a neighborhood nuisance with their loud nocturnal calls. Moreover, when rain flooded the nearby reservoir, the water overflowed into the farm giving the alligators the chance to make repeated forays into neighborhood canals, backyards, and occasionally swimming pools.

By the 1950s, the zoo moved to Buena Park, but the novelty had worn off. The attraction was shut down in 1984 after attendance dropped below 50,000 persons annually (and the lease was not renewed). The alligators were sold to a private estate in Florida.

There are lots of gory stuff going on in the dark web

There are lots of gory stuff going on in the dark web. There was a site where people commit suicide and video themselves doing it, even they have people who teach you how best to commit suicide by hanging and where to place your camera for live feed of the suicide. Then there's another for necrophilia where people go to the morgue to have sex with dead people. Some go as far as digging up fresh graves of people to have sex with the dead bodies. One dissected a female body and put his dick inside the pussy and you can see his dick as he's fucking the dead body cos he removed the whole intestines. Many unthinkable activities going on there. You can also buy stolen credit cards and so on. Oh, and also a place where you can sell your skin. If your skin is clean and spotless, you can sell it at an outrageous price. They use the skin to manufacture bags, shoes, sandals and other leather materials which are bought by some rich individuals. The site is for some people who would like to...

Top 3 Moments Not To Approach A Woman

  1. Exercise The number one time not to approach a woman is when she is exercising. Now I know there are few desperate young ladies that go to the gym to get attention from men and not to exercise. You can easily tell by their full face of make up, freshly Curled hair, and come freak me yoga pants. They will not be working out much so free feel approach them because you definitely get what you want. That is why I was specific when I said exercising as opposed to the gym because there is a different. Now if you see a young lady going hard in the paint and she is visibly tired. Sweety, and out of breath, do not 2. On the phone This has got to be the rudest things to do to anyone. Lesson of the day: home tranning! I can't tell you how many times I envisioned kicking someone in the esophagus because they are trying to start a conversation with me when you see that I'm already engaged in conversation on my head held mobile device. You have no idea who is on the other line! What if ...

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying Flaying — better known as “skinning alive” — has a long and grotesque history. Records of the practice exist as far back as the Neo-Assyrian Empire (beginning in 911 B.C.), but it has cropped up in most civilizations at one time or another, including Medieval Europe (where it tended to be used as a punishment for traitors) and in the ritual human sacrifices made by the Aztecs in Mexico (the Aztecs, at least, are believed to have skinned the body after the sacrifice had been made). Various techniques have been utilized in the many different cultures in which flaying has been employed, but the basis remains the same: Slowly, excruciatingly slicing the skin from the body while keeping the victim alive for as long as possible (and when feasible, removing the skin intact). Rendering Of Flaying Wikimedia Commons Carvings from the Assyrian period show the process beginning with incisions to the thighs or buttocks, while the European method — pictured...

The Macabre True Story Of Edward Paisnel, The Beast Of Jersey

The Macabre True Story Of Edward Paisnel, The Beast Of Jersey Throughout the 1960s, Edward Paisnel appeared to be a pillar of his small community on the English Channel Island of Jersey. He was a family man who was devoted to his wife Joan and her young children, and he even played Santa Claus at Christmastime for the young foster children at the group home that Joan founded. But when he wasn't spending time with his family or doing good deeds, he was donning this mask and sneaking into his neighbors' homes at night in order to sexually assault women and children. It would take more than a decade for police to finally catch up with the “Beast of Jersey" as they repeatedly focused on other suspects, blind to the fact that a man like Paisnel could commit such crimes. Officers only caught him when he ran a red light one day in 1971 and they happened to see his mask sitting right there in his car. Edward Paisnel committed more than a dozen rapes and assaults in the Channel Is...

Meet The African Tribe Where The Men Kidnap The Women They Desire To Marry

Meet The African Tribe Where The Men Kidnap The Women They Desire To Marry There is a small ethnic group who live in the mountains and settlements of South Sudan, they are the Latuka tribe. They are farmers and also herders. They rear sheep, cattle, and goats, they also grow sorghum, maize, yam, ground nuts, and potatoes. The puzzling and fascinating aspect of their culture is their marriage rights. One thing about the people of Latuka is that if a man desires to marry a woman he must kidnap her and put her in his house, secondly, the father of the kidnapped bride to be must indicate that he is in support of their union by whipping him It is not stated if the whippings are severe or not, but what I can tell you is that the woman has no say on the choice of man she wants, especially if the one that kidnaps her is not her preferred choice. Meet The African Tribe Where The Men Kidnap The Women They Desire To Marry In different parts of the world, a consensual wedding ceremony occurs, wher...
