Have you seen those very tiny pockets on jeans?
Ever wondered what they are for? They're too small to fit anything useful.
People have wondered about the tiny pocket's purpose.
They called it the coin pocket - for slipping loose coins into.
They called it the ticket pocket - for keeping tickets safe.
Many call it the finger pocket - you can slip in those fidgety fingers when they are feeling bored or awkward. (It's not a rule or anything but it's probably best to put in your own fingers, and not somebody else's.)
But here's the real purpose of those tiny pockets - they're for storing pocket watches.
Jeans hit the markets in 1800s, back when pocket watches were very common. Those tiny pockets were originally intended as a safe place for men to store their pocket watches.
Back in those days, tiny pockets were so commonly used for their intended purpose that they were called watch pockets.....because they were made to keep pocket watches.
These days, not many people carry around pocket watches, so the watch pocket is more for fashion than anything else.
