We all make mistakes from time to time—after all, we’re only human. But some celebrities have messed up so badly, it’s cost them their reputation. While many of them were able to make amends and come back, others aren’t so lucky and have seen their careers nosedive. Here are 5 celebrities who’ve ruined their reputation by their own actions.

1. Lea Michele

Fans of the show Glee were surprised that star Lea Michele didn’t live up to her onscreen good-girl image, when it came out that she was a bully on set. It reportedly wasn’t the only time the actress was accused of bad behaviour with her co-workers. She was also accused of making “racist micoagressions to/about black people.” Since the allegations surfaced, Michele hasn’t landed a starring role anywhere.

2. Ellen DeGeneres

She might be known for her infectious positivity, but talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres’s reputation took a bit of a beating in 2020. While the host herself was never accused of anything nefarious, several members of her staff were. Allegations included reports of a toxic work culture, discrimination, and harassment, which have tarnished DeGeneres’s name.

3. Robert Downey Jr.

While the Iron Man star has since worked hard to rehabilitate his reputation, it was once in the toilet. Things took a turn for the worse in the ‘90s and early ‘00s when Downey Jr. faced a series of arrests for drug-related offences, theft, and firearms possession. He ultimately spent a year and a half in jail for his crimes. Many in Hollywood were reluctant to work with the star when he tried to make a comeback.

4. Jeffrey Toobin

Author and CNN commentator Jeffrey Toobin was suspended from his role at The New Yorkerafter exposing his private parts during a work call over Zoom in October 2020. Once well-respected among his peers, he’s now the laughingstock of a generation.

5. Ice Cube

Actor, rapper, and filmmaker O’Shea Jackson Sr., known professionally as Ice Cube, was once a popular artist on the music scene. In June 2020, he came under fire after posting a string of anti-Semitic images and baffling conspiracy theories to his Twitter account.
