11 SIGNS YOU’RE IN A BAD RELATIONSHIP (BUT DON’T WANT TO ADMIT IT)

A Poisonous relationship can alter our perception. You can spend many years thinking you’re worthless. But you’re not worthless. You’re underappreciated.” – Steve Maraboli

Being in a bad or toxic relationship is often something that we don’t realize that we’re in until we’re out of it. Bad relationships can invade every other aspect of our lives, from our friendships to our family relationships. They can make you feel depressed or anxious for no reason.

Marriage & family therapist and author Darlene Lancer, JD, MFT says, “Healthy relationships nourish and support us. A toxic relationship, on the other hand, is like poison to us — instead of lifting us up, it makes us feel worse. When it ends, we might experience post-traumatic stress or a lessening of self-esteem and trust in ourselves and others.”

When you’re in a bad relationship, you’re probably ignoring all the signs – it’s what we do as humans to protect ourselves. If you’re in a toxic relationship, you may notice these signs that point towards a bad relationship that you don’t want to admit.

HERE ARE 11 SIGNS YOU’RE IN A BAD RELATIONSHIP

1. YOU’RE WONDERING IF YOUR RELATIONSHIP IS BAD

One of the first signs that you’re not actually in a good relationship is questioning whether or not your relationship is bad because “This is your subconscious telling you something,” says Relationship expert and couples therapist Nicole McCance.

You may have rough patches in normal relationships, but aren’t always wondering if your relationship is bad. But a bad relationship will have you wondering if your relationship is garbage – and that’s the first sign that you should be looking critically at your relationship.

2. YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE A PRIORITY

Does your partner put you first when you need it? Does your partner seem like the kind of person who will drop everything and help you when it’s really important? If not, then you’re probably in a relationship where you don’t feel like a priority to your partner. While we can’t always be top priority, you should feel like your partner cares about you.

3. IF THEY DON’T WANT TO DO SOMETHING, THEN YOU CAN’T DO IT EITHER

In a relationship, you sometimes have to do things you don’t want to do because it’s important to your partner, or because you want to make them happy. You may go see a movie you’re not interested in because your partner likes it. But in a bad relationship, if your partner doesn’t want to do something, then you probably won’t be allowed to do it either. If your partner doesn’t want to go to a movie, you’re probably not going to be able to see it.

In a toxic relationship, “ … you are constantly put down, criticised and forced to do what is unacceptable to you and your values. When your autonomy in thoughts, words, and decisions is taken away and you start actually believing and accepting that you have no choice in any matter, ” says psychotherapist and relationship counselor Dr. Minnu Bhonsle Ph.D.

4. YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY DISLIKE YOUR PARTNER

You have probably been on the other end of this situation. A friend or family member has been in a bad relationship, and you didn’t like their partner. If you’re suddenly on the opposite side of that, you may want to take your friends and family’s concern seriously. If your partner isn’t well-liked, it might be for a reason.

5. THEIR PROBLEMS ARE YOUR PROBLEMS

And your problems … are also your problems. This is a red flag. When your partner wants you to help with all of their problems, but doesn’t want to help you with yours, this is a sign that your relationship is just plain bad. You need to have a relationship where both partners help each other equally.

6. YOU DON’T TRUST THEM

If your partner is working late or hanging out with their friends, you’re suddenly worried about what it is they’re out doing. You may be trying to tell yourself there’s no reason to worry, but … if you’re worried, it’s probably for a good reason.
When there is no trust there is no foundation. You can’t address communication issues, compatibility issues, and intimacy issues if there is no trust. If you fundamentally don’t trust your partner on any level, the relationship is poisoned. ”

You shouldn’t have to worry about what your partner is up to in a good and healthy relationship.

7. YOU’RE HAPPIER WHEN THEY’RE NOT AROUND

If your partner goes on a trip or leaves for the night, you may feel a huge rush of relief. And that’s not normal!

“If you’re all that excited to have a weekend alone, consider that the reason for your joy is that they’re draining you when they’re around. You should be happy to have a break, but not that happy,” says relationship expert and author April Masini.

You may just try to tell yourself that you’re an introvert, but the truth is that you’re just happier when your partner isn’t around. This is the biggest sign of an unhappy or bad relationship.

8. YOU PAY FOR EVERYTHING

Food, bills, rent, entertainment, furniture… no matter what it is, you’re always paying. Your partner seems to always be needing you to pay for things, and offering to pay you back … but you haven’t seen a dime. This is a big sign that you’re being used, and being used is a sign that you’re in a bad relationship.

9. YOU’RE CONSTANTLY WORRIED ABOUT BREAKING UP

No matter what kind of disagreement that you have, you are always worried about breaking up. You could be disagreeing about what to have for dinner, or whose family’s house to go to for Christmas. Whatever the disagreement is, it seems to always spiral out of control to an argument that feels like the end of your relationship.

10. THEY’RE ALWAYS MENTALLY ELSEWHERE

When you’re spending time together, your partner seems like they’re just mentally distant. They’re not engaging with you or with the things that you’re doing together. They may always be on their phone, or they just may sound or look bored. You may think that it’s just you, but that’s not true. This is a red flag that you’re in a bad relationship and it’s time to move on.

11. YOU’RE TRYING TO REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES

When things get bad, you’re always trying to remember when things were good. This may be only the first few months of the relationship, or they may be only certain snippets of time. This is a sign that the relationship is bad and doesn’t show any sign of getting better.

“If you’re starting to have thoughts like, ‘This is not like it used to be,’ ‘This is not what I signed up for,’ or ‘This doesn’t feel good anymore,’ it is possible that what was a good relationship has turned toxic. If you find that your partner doesn’t feel much like a partner or lover any longer—and he or she is bringing you down more than lifting you up, you need to rethink your relationship.” says relationship expert Sofia Milan.

Therefore, if you’re not looking forward to more good times and are only looking back, you might need to accept that the relationship is bad.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Bad relationships are hard to accept, especially when you’re in the middle of one.

“If you are experiencing a toxic relationship, then you likely move in and out of a state of denial about how unhealthy it truly is. At one moment you feel revulsion and at another you are making excuses and justifying your partner’s intolerable behavior,” says relationship expert, psychologist and author Jill P. Weber, Ph.D.

Admitting to yourself that your relationship is bad or toxic is one of the first steps that everyone has to take in order to start to escape them. If your relationship sounds a lot like this list, it may be time to start considering that it’s time to leave the relationship and find someone who appreciates you.

A Very Victorian Two-Penny Hangover

During the Great Depreciation in London, people who couldn’t afford to sleep in a bad could pay twopence for a spot on a bench with a clothesline tied in front of them, so they could sleep while hanging over a rope . The term ‘hangover’ is universally understood to mean the disproportionate suffering that comes after a night of over-indulgence. But where does the term actually come from? One possible explanation is, somewhat strangely, Victorian England. During the Victorian era the practice of paying for a ‘two-penny hangover’ was incredibly popular among the country’s homeless population and the term ‘two penny hangover’ was so commonly used that it made its way into contemporary literature. A two-penny hangover is not the description of a very cheap night out, nor is it the amount it would cost you to get drunk in Victorian England. It is actually somewhere you could go to sleep if you were one of the thousands of homeless and destitute living in the country’s main cities at the tim...

Could Ancient Peruvians Really Know How To Melt Stone Blocks?

Could Ancient Peruvians Really Know How To Melt Stone Blocks? The idea of a plant material melting stone looks implausible, the theory and science are gaining traction. Why couldn’t the ancient Peruvians cut a stone to look like this if a Spanish artist could do it today? Scientists and archaeologists are trying to figure out how odd ancient Peruvian structures like the Sacsahuamán Complex were built. These magnificent structures are composed of enormous stones that our modern technology cannot move or arrange properly. Read more Is the answer a special plant that allowed ancient Peruvians to soften the stone, or were they aware of a mystery advanced old technology that could liquefy stones? According to investigators Jan Peter de Jong, Christopher Jordan, and Jesus Gamarra, the stone walls at Cuzco show indications of being heated to a high temperature and vitrified, making the exterior glossy – and incredibly smooth. In Spain, an artist may create works of art that look ...

Gary Plauché, The Father Who Killed His Son's Abuser

Gary Plauché, The Father Who Killed His Son's Abuser "He used to tell people, 'If anybody ever touches my kid, I'll **** him.' I knew he wasn't kidding." In February 1984, 11-year-old Jody Plauché was kidnapped and sexually-assaulted by his karate teacher, Jeff Doucet. Stolen away from his Baton Rouge home and held prisoner in a California motel room, he endured several days of horrific abuse before police tracked him and his kidnapper down and returned him safely to his dad, Gary Plauché. But Jody's ordeal wasn't over — and his father wanted revenge. On March 16, 1984, Doucet was being walked through the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport to be handed over to Louisiana authorities. Gary Plauché, hiding behind sunglasses and a baseball cap, stood in wait, then suddenly stepped forward and shot Doucet in the head at point-blank range — all while local news cameras were rolling.  See the photos and go inside the harrowing true story of Jody Plauché...

A powerful West African kingdom, the Ashanti Empire ruled over much of the "Gold Coast" in the 18th and 19th centuries

A powerful West African kingdom, the Ashanti Empire ruled over much of the "Gold Coast" in the 18th and 19th centuries. Though they were mostly known for their vast deposits of gold, they were also known for their involvement in the slave trade — and human sacrifice. One English explorer who visited the Ashanti Empire in the early 1800s described a grisly scene of a man being sacrificed: "A knife was passed through his cheeks, to which his lips were noosed like the figure of 8; one ear was cut off and carried before him, the other hung to his head by a small bit of skin; there were several gashes in his back, and a knife was thrust under each shoulder blade." The British would later use scenes like this as a pretext to annex the territories held by the Ashanti. But the Ashanti people refused to give up their land — and fought back against British colonization in a series of bloody wars. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Ashanti Empire ruled over much of modern...

The Short Life Of Frank Capone, Al Capone's Brother

The Short Life Of Frank Capone, Al Capone's Brother Frank Capone, elder brother of Alphonse “Scarface Al” Capone, was, some experts say, a man who could have written an even bloodier chapter in American crime than his infamous brother. While still in his 20s, he died in a pool of blood, riddled with slugs from a police shotgun. Another great Capone legend was nipped in the bud. Frank Capone had a dedication to bloodletting and more savage instincts than Al, a man who is conservatively estimated to have ordered the deaths of at least 500 victims. Despite this bloody record, Al always exercised a certain patience. His credo, absorbed from the teachings of Johnny Torrio, was “always try to deal before you have to kill.” To Frank Capone, this was an alien philosophy. His favorite observation was, “You never get no back talk from no corpse.” And when spoken by Frank, the words, uttered with quiet, almost bankerlike reserve, bore an ominous quality unrivaled by Hollywood-inspired villain...

A photograph shows then-first lady Nancy Reagan with Mr. T dressed up as Santa Claus In December 2019, a photograph supposedly showing then-first lady Nancy Reagan with Mr. T in a Santa Claus costume in the early 1980s was posted to the Old School Cool section of Reddit: This is a genuine photograph of the former first lady and the star of the action television show “The A-Team.”  In addition to being a star, Mr. T was also an anti-drug advocate. In 1983, Nancy Reagan, who had recently launched her “Just Say No (To Drugs)” campaign, invited Mr. T (born Lawrence Tureaud) to the White House for a Christmas event. Mr. T, who wore a sleeveless Santa suit and entertained guests as the first lady gave reporters a tour of the holiday decorations, described the invitation as the most “surprising” thing to happen to him in a 2008 interview: When I got invited to the White House to meet Ronald Reagan in 1983. Nancy Reagan was campaigning to get kids to say no to drugs, and they heard about m...

Earlier reports had described it as an attack with a rocket. Eight were rescued alive. There is no report on the number who died or are still buried under rubble. It isn't reported whether this child survived or not. Those who glorify Russia's role in Syria & support Syrian, Russian, or US coalition bombing of civilians should hang their heads in shame. Angkor Wat: History of Ancient Temple

Constructed almost 1,000 years ago and surrounded by a moat, the great Khmer Temple of Angkor Wat is one of largest and most elaborately carved archeological sites on earth.  Located in Siem Reap, Cambodia it was originally built as a personal mausoleum for King Suryavarman II and dedicated to Vishnu. It was converted to a Buddhist Temple at the end of the 12th century. At the entrance to the temple gate stands the mythical Naga. This massive statue represents the seven-headed serpent and protector of Buddha... Built between roughly A.D. 1113 and 1150, and encompassing an area of about 500 acres (200 hectares), Angkor Wat is one of the largest religious monuments ever constructed. Its name means "temple city." Originally built as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu, it was converted into a Buddhist temple in the 14th century, and statues of Buddha were added to its already rich artwork. Sometime later it was turned into a military fortification. Today it is a UNESCO Wo...
