During World War 2, the British produced the Welbike, which was the smallest motorcylce to ever be used by the British military
The Welbike was a British single-seat folding motorcycle produced during World War II at the direction of Station IX — the "Inter Services Research Bureau" — based at Welwyn, UK, for use by Special Operations Executive (SOE). It has the distinction of being the smallest motorcycle ever used by the British Armed Forces. Between 1942 and 1943, 3,641 units (plus a prototype and some pilot models) were built and, although not much used by the SOE, some were issued to the British 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions and some were used at Arnhem during Operation Market Garden.
The Italians, Germans and Americans also developed small motorcycles for their airborne forces during World War II.
It weighed 32 kg (71 lbs) and had a fuel capacity of 3.7 liters (0.98 gallons), which allowed it to go up to 140 km (87 miles) at a speed of 48 km/h (30 mph).
The Welbike was delivered via air in a parachute container. Once it hit the ground, the handlebars had to be twisted into place and the seat had to be pulled up, allowing for the footrest to pop out. All in all, a soldier would be able to ride off on the motorcylce within 11 seconds after coming in contact with the delivery.
The Welbike name comes from a contraction of Welwyn (a village in north London) and bike. The motorcycle was developed in a secret military base near Welwyn in 1942.
