10 Reasons Why Men Should Quit Watching Po*n

At 9:17 a.m. on February 28, 1997, Larry Phillips Jr. and Emil Matasareanu popped a few muscle relaxers and entered a Bank of America in North Hollywood.

They were wearing ski masks and custom body armor while carrying automatic rifles with thousands of rounds of ammunition. One witness recalled: "I heard gunshots and screaming voices — men's voices — yelling, 'This is a holdup!'" The men opened fire at the door to the bank's vault, breaking it open and giving them access to the loot inside. At that point, the robbers' plan began to fall apart.
The armored truck that would be delivering the bank's cash for the day hadn't yet arrived, so there was less money in the vault than Phillips and Matasareanu had anticipated. Enraged, Matasareanu started shooting at the remaining cash, blowing it to shreds. With just over $300,000 in their bags, the men exited the bank — and were instantly surrounded by police. Instead of surrendering, however, they waged a 44-minute gun battle against authorities that only ended when both robbers were dead.

Emil Matasareanu, the bank robber shot by police in a wild gun battle in North Hollywood and given no medical care, was hit 29 times and bled to death from two bullet wounds to his thigh, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office revealed Thursday.

His partner, Larry Eugene Phillips Jr., shot himself in the head, but it could not be determined whether that bullet killed him or whether another potentially fatal shot fired by police about the same time caused his death, according to the autopsy reports released Thursday.

The release of those reports revived questions over whether Matasareanu could have survived the gunshots to his left leg, which ended the gunfight in which the heavily armed and armored robbers fired hundreds of shots as police closed in on them.

Police have said they did not provide immediate medical care to Matasareanu--who lay in the street untreated for more than an hour before being declared dead--for two reasons: There could have been another armed robber in the area and the bomb squad needed to examine the robber for possible grenades or booby traps.

But Dr. Marshall Morgan, chief of emergency medicine at UCLA Medical Center, who reviewed Matasareanu’s autopsy report shortly after its release, said the robber could have survived the gunshot wounds even with simple first aid, much less professional medical attention.

“There’s no question in my mind that had he received timely care--from a medical standpoint--he would have survived,” Morgan said. “I see no reason why a guy would die of these wounds. . . . I think even timely first aid, as opposed to trauma care, could have saved his life.”

An internal LAPD review of the shooting revealed that 32 officers fired at the robbers, including SWAT officers, patrol and motorcycle officers and detectives.

Matasareanu was hit 29 times, including 27 shots that broke his skin, one bullet graze and a chest bruise from one of a number of bullets that impacted his armor, the coroner’s report said.

Bullets struck him in the arm, shoulder, eye cavity, left upper thigh, buttocks and chest. But it was two thigh wounds that caused the heaviest bleeding, leaving his aorta with minimal blood and other central veins and arteries bloodless and collapsed, the report states.

“It did not contact the femoral artery, which is the main blood supply to the leg,” said Scott Carrier, spokesman for the coroner. “But because of extensive damage . . . he bled to death.”

Morgan agreed, saying there appeared to be no life-threatening wounds except for the two in his thigh.

Phillips was hit 11 times, including the shot he fired with a handgun. “We can’t say if it was a homicide or a suicide,” Carrier said, adding that investigators were unable to determine the precise sequence of the shots.

The botched Feb. 28 bank robbery, captured on live television, left 11 officers and six civilians wounded or injured. Most of the injured officers are back on duty.

The dramatic events began unfolding about 9:15 a.m. when the robbers, wearing body armor, were confronted by police outside the Laurel Canyon Boulevard bank branch. The robbers engaged police, many of whom had no bulletproof vests, in a running gunfight for about half an hour before officers gained the upper hand.

Phillips, on foot, was the first to die, firing a pistol under his chin and nearly simultaneously being shot by pursuing officers.

Matasareanu, who was driving down Archwood Street and attempting to commandeer a passing pickup truck, was shot by SWAT officers about 9:55 a.m. The coroner’s autopsy report gives his time of death as 11:10 a.m.--the time Fire Department paramedics pronounced him dead, as opposed to a time determined by scientific tests.

Typically, a liver temperature is taken to determine a more exact time of death, but because of the body armor worn by Matasareanu, 30, that test was not conducted, the coroner’s office said.

“We are not there to unclothe people in public view,” said Carrier, adding that the coroner’s investigator at the scene made that decision in part because the robber’s death was witnessed by a number of people.

Dr. Richard Siegler, a pathologist at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, said it did not strike him as unusual that a liver temperature was not taken.

“In this case, it was clear and notorious what happened,” he said.

Eyewitnesses have said that Matasareanu was conscious and talking to officers after being shot.

An ambulance came to the area to care for the driver of the pickup truck but left quickly and without aiding Matasareanu.

Cmdr. Tim McBride said there were “legitimate concerns” about the situation--including the discovery of two gasoline bombs in Matasareanu’s car.

Inside The Revenge Killing Of Frank DeCicco, The Gambino Underboss Who Brazenly Took Out A Don

Inside The Revenge Killing Of Frank DeCicco, The Gambino Underboss Who Brazenly Took Out A Don Frank DeCicco helped John Gotti take over the family by murdering their boss — only to be killed in a bombing months later. In 1986, Frank DeCicco was blown up by a car bomb in Brooklyn after he conspired to whack the boss of the Gambino family. Sammy "The Bull" Gravano was the first to encounter the grisly aftermath: "I grabbed a leg, but he ain't coming with it. The leg is off. One of his arms is off. I got my hand under him and my hand went right through his body to his stomach. There's no ass. His ass, his balls, everything, is blown completely off." See the photos and take a closer look inside DeCicco's disturbing demise by clicking the link in our bio. Annie Lee Cooper, The Black Activist John Lewis Revered As ‘Absolutely Fearless’

Annie Lee Cooper, The Black Activist John Lewis Revered As ‘Absolutely Fearless’ From marching with Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma to socking a racist cop for trying to keep her from the polls, Annie Lee Cooper fought for the rights of Black Americans with ferocity. In January 1965, an Alabama woman named Annie Lee Cooper lined up at her county courthouse to vote. This was not her first attempt, as she had been turned away from the polls just two years earlier. And after failing the impossible literacy tests made to keep Black people from the ballot box, Cooper decided that this time would be different. When a notoriously racist cop named Jim Clark began to demand that she abandon her spot in line, Cooper did her best to ignore him. But when he poked her in the neck with his billy club, Cooper took action — and punched him square in the face. The stunt nearly cost her her life and she was almost charged with attempted murder, but today her scuffle is remembered as courageous. As n...

Florida's Messiest Execution

Florida's Messiest Execution On July 8, 1999, the execution of Allen Lee Davis set off a shock wave that rippled around the world. During his time in the electric chair, Davis bled profusely from the nose and suffered burns to his head, leg, and groin area. As the switch was thrown, the “Tiny” Davis, who was executed for the May 11, 1982, murder of Nancy Weiler and her two daughters, reared back against the restraints, giving witnesses a chilling glimpse under a black hood designed to hide the faces of the condemned. Blood poured from his vivid purple nose, ran down the wide leather strap that covered his mouth and soaked the white shirt. After the power was turned off, Davis was still alive. Witnesses said his chest rose and fell about 10 times before he went still. After the execution, state prison officials and Governor Jeb Bush said the Old Sparky functioned properly. Three photos of the incident have been published on Florida’s High Court official website in an attempt to argu...

“A Match Made in Hell”: How Robert Thompson and Jon Venables Became Killers When They Were Just 10 Years Old

"A match made in hell." On February 12, 1993, two 10-year-old boys named Robert Thompson and Jon Venables abducted 2-year-old James Bulger from a shopping center in England. They then blinded him with paint, pummeled him with bricks and stones, and hit him over the head with an iron bar before placing his body onto nearby train tracks — where a train would sever him in two. The youngest convicted killers in modern British history, Thompson and Venables served 8 years for the murder and were both released in 2001. But unfortunately, their story didn't end there. After Germany's surrender in May 1945, millions of German soldiers remained prisoners of war. In France, their internment lasted a particularly long time. But, for some former soldiers, it was a path to rehabilitation. French units lost out to US soldiers in the last meters of the race to reach Adolf Hitler's destroyed Alpine headquarters, the Berghof. But French troops in southern Germany in early May 1945 nonetheless made good progress, capturing one town after the other. After four years of Nazi occupation, France, under General Charles de Gaulle, joined the ultimately victorious Allied powers in 1944. And the country made sure the defeated German natio...
