Meet Oliver Sipple, the veteran who saved President Ford's life - and was punished for it

In 1975, a disabled Vietnam vet named Oliver Sipple saved President Gerald Ford from an assassin. Although Sipple was hailed a hero at first, the tide quickly turned when the media outed him as a gay man.

Not only did the exposure of his homosexuality overshadow his heroic act, it also led to his family essentially disowning him. Years later, Sipple's lifeless body was found next to a cheap bottle of bourbon in his apartment. He'd been dead for nearly two weeks before anyone found him.

After disarming an assassin, Oliver Sipple was hailed a hero. But the ensuing media storm outed him as gay and upended his entire life.
One morning in September 1975, 33-year-old ex-Marine Oliver Sipple went for a walk around his San Francisco neighborhood. Within moments, he found himself saving the life of U.S. President Gerald Ford from a deranged female assassin.

Sipple was hailed as a national hero for disarming the shooter, but his heroism was just as quickly overshadowed by scandal when a journalist reported on his homosexuality. Sipple hadn’t even told his family yet.

The national attention would upend his life.

Who Was Oliver Sipple?

Oliver “Billy” W. Sipple was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1941. He was part of a large family — one of eight siblings — and raised by parents who were devout Baptists.

Sipple had a complicated upbringing. He was dyslexic which made school difficult and he also learned early that he was gay, a fact that would have upset his religious parents. Sipple was forced to hide his sexual identity from his family.

Eventually, he dropped out of high school and joined the U.S. Marines where he served a tour in Vietnam and was wounded twice — once in the head.

At the time, the U.S. military had not enacted its “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy which allowed gay members to enlist only if they kept their sexual identity secret. Sipple remained closeted anyway.

Upon his discharge in the ’70s, Oliver Sipple moved to San Francisco where there was a burgeoning gay scene.

Sipple immersed himself in the Bay Area’s gay community. He dove into politics, joining the political campaign for Harvey Milk who became the first openly gay elected official in California.

But these years of living safely and comfortable as his true self would come to a halt after one chance encounter involving the President of the United States.

On Sept. 22, 1975, Oliver Sipple went out on his usual walk around the neighborhood of Union Square in downtown San Francisco.

That day the streets were busier than usual as President Gerald Ford had made an appearance at a conference at the St. Francis Hotel. Throngs of crowds amassed outside to greet the president after the event.

As Oliver Sipple was making his way through the people, he saw a woman whip out a .38-caliber pistol. Acting on impulse, Sipple swiftly knocked the weapon out of the woman’s hand, causing a bullet to ricochet into the crowd of 3,000 people, minorly grazing a nearby taxi driver.

Thanks to Sipple’s quick thinking, the assassin was foiled and the shooter, later identified as Sara Jane Moore, was sentenced to life in prison.

It wasn’t the first presidential assassination attempt on Ford, though. An earlier attempt had been carried out only a few weeks prior by a Charles Manson acolyte named Squeaky Fromme.

Oliver Sipple’s quick thinking made him an instant hero and local newspapers began to investigate his background to flesh out their stories on his brave deed.

But Sipple reportedly called several news outlets before they printed their stories about him, begging them not to use his real name or address.

“I’m not a hero, I’m a live coward,” he told the press. “It’s probably the scariest thing that ever happened in my whole life.”

The media soon learned that Sipple was gay and decided they would release that information.

News that the Republican president’s savior was a homosexual rocked the public. Worse still, Sipple’s family was still unaware of his sexual orientation.

“He just was astounded that some columnist and then the rest of the media would just take it upon themselves — without ever asking him — to publicize these personal facts about him,” Sipple’s attorney John Wahl reported in 1989.

Sipple’s Scandal

According to Dan Morain, a political affairs columnist at the Sacramento Bee who has written extensively on the aftermath of Oliver Sipple’s scandal, politician Harvey Milk used Sipple’s outing as an opportunity to promote gay rights.

Milk told Herb Caen, a famous local columnist, that the gay community was very proud of Oliver Sipple’s actions because it proved that homosexuals were not bad people. But this news had severe repercussions on Sipple’s private life.

“[Sipple’s] father didn’t want anything to do with him,” Morain told NPR. “I was told that when his mother died, he was not really welcome at the funeral.”

The fallout was so unbearable that Sipple sued seven newspapers and 50 publishing executives for releasing personal information about him without his consent. The suit began only a week after Sipple had saved the president’s life.

“My sexuality,” Oliver Sipple said at a news conference announcing his $15 million lawsuit, “is a part of my private life and has no bearing on my response to the act of a person seeking to take the life of another.”

He also said that the disclosure of his sexual identity had caused him “great mental anguish, embarrassment, and humiliation.”

Although Sipple was heralded as a “gay hero,” his identity was nonetheless largely unaccepted by society and his own family.

In 1984, Sipple’s lawsuit against the media was dismissed by the California Supreme Court. When a lower court discovered that plenty of people — who were mainly, of course, Sipple’s friends and colleagues in the gay community — had known about his homosexuality before the news outlets published it, the case was dismissed.

Oliver Sipple’s sexual identity tragically came to overshadow the heroism he displayed in both the Vietnam War and in saving the life of the president. Sipple was never invited to the White House and received only a brief thank you letter from the president.

In fact, Sipple didn’t receive a signed letter of commendation from President Ford until much later. He had the letter framed and hung on his apartment wall.

“He did some very heroic things,” Wahl said. “He was 100 percent disabled from his service in the Marine Corps, then he went out of his way, endangering his life, to save the life of President Gerald Ford — then he got punished for doing it.”

In the last years of his life, Oliver Sipple received treatment for schizophrenia, alcoholism, and other health issues. He claimed that his siblings had all but abandoned him.

Sipple was found dead inside his apartment where he lived alone on Feb. 3, 1989. There was a half-gallon bottle of bourbon at his side and the coroner estimated that he had been dead for two weeks already. His death was attributed to natural causes. He was only 47 years old.

A nurse writes down the last words of a dying soldier, 1917

A nurse writes down the last words of a dying soldier, 1917 Seen here is a nurse writing down the last words of a British soldier during World War I. WWI lasted 4 years from 1914 - 1918, with many historians agreeing that 1917 was the worst year of the war.  Nurses played a vital role during the war, as they helped troops recover from their injuries and helped them to get back to the battlefield Nurses also comforted mortally wounded soldiers. Some soldiers suffered from different psychological disorders due to their time being exposed to a combat zone, including anxiety disorders, depression and battle fatigue, which is now known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which was a condition that was not acknowledged at the time.  Before World War II, WWI was known as "The Great War". It is infamous for its brutal and almost eerie nature. The war is also known for its primitive and basic technology, which led to much of the combat being hand to hand and up-close.  World War I ...

Meet Dawson : The Man Who Faked Being Deaf And Dumb For 62 Years To Avoid Talking To His Wife

A man from Waterbury in Connecticut faked being deaf and dumb for 62 years to avoid talking to his wife. 84-year old Barry Dawson never spoke a single word in front of his 80-year old wife Dorothy during their 62 years of marriage. Upon learning about her husband’s decades-old deception, Dorothy filed for divorce. She said it took her 2 years to learn to communicate with hands so she could talk with her husband. She learned the truth via a Youtube video in which Barry was seen dancing and singing during a karaoke night in a bar. “When he was at home, that j*** always faked being deaf. It wasn’t until I saw a Youtube video of him singing during a karaoke night in a bar while he was supposed to be at a meeting for a charity, that I understood everything.” Dawson’s lawyer said that his client is quiet, but not a cheat otherwise he would not have stayed in the relationship for 62 years. He said the man wanted to save the relationship because his wife was ‘annoyingly talkative’ and had he n...

There are lots of gory stuff going on in the dark web

There are lots of gory stuff going on in the dark web. There was a site where people commit suicide and video themselves doing it, even they have people who teach you how best to commit suicide by hanging and where to place your camera for live feed of the suicide. Then there's another for necrophilia where people go to the morgue to have sex with dead people. Some go as far as digging up fresh graves of people to have sex with the dead bodies. One dissected a female body and put his dick inside the pussy and you can see his dick as he's fucking the dead body cos he removed the whole intestines. Many unthinkable activities going on there. You can also buy stolen credit cards and so on. Oh, and also a place where you can sell your skin. If your skin is clean and spotless, you can sell it at an outrageous price. They use the skin to manufacture bags, shoes, sandals and other leather materials which are bought by some rich individuals. The site is for some people who would like to...

Reasons Why Guys And Girls Can't Be Just Friends

Does a river flowed through the Forest without bringing down tree? Or does a cock played with a corn? Don't consider dating that girl that only chose to make boys as her friends or that say " I only have a male friends" There is proverb that states that boys and girls cannot be friends because someone is bound to have feelings and end up getting hurt. Here are the reasons why boy and girl can't be just friends A boy and a girl cannot be just friends, At least one party is drawn to the other sexually. it is difficult for the relationship to be entirely platonic. Our genetics simply drive our attraction to the opposite sex! The likelihood that at least one party is drawn to the other sexually is very high.  Men and women often think they are nothing but friends when in reality one person's mind or the other is thinking more. They may never share this information with their friend, but there's always that feeling that one of these days we're going to get a li...

A cop trying to pin down a striker during the RCA Victor (Consumer electronics company) strike at Camden, New Jersey, USA, 2 July 1936.

A cop trying to pin down a striker during the RCA Victor (Consumer electronics company) strike at Camden, New Jersey, USA, 2 July 1936. Was unable to find a historical retelling of events but by looking at some articles from the time I was able to piece some things together from Time and the New York Post. It appears the main demands by the strikers was an abolition of RCA's company union (a worker organization which is dominated or unduly influenced by an employer, and is therefore not an independent trade union), and a 20% wage increase. Things started off peacefully with the strikers picketing the plant and the strikers and the RCA trying to drown out each other's music that was being played on loudspeaker. RCA then started to employ strikebreakers (scabs) and then things appeared to have escalated from there. With strikers accused of “jabbing girl employees with pins” and hurling eggs filled with paint and the scabs were accused of throwing red pepper, hot metal and “light ...

How to Get Over A Relationship

When two people get into a relationship, they look towards a happy future together. But what happens if they break up? Sadness, anger, bitterness, stress, and heartache. Learning to let go is necessary because life will go on with or without your partner. Moving on is not easy, but it is possible. This article provides a number of steps to help you move forward and successfully get over a relationship. 1. Understand your own feelings. Denial doesn’t solve anything. Ignored emotions will only make you calloused and afraid. - If you need to cry, do so. Crying clears your mind and helps you vent your emotions. Repression never helps anyone, so be honest about your ever-changing feelings. - If you don't feel like crying, maybe head to the gym and find an available punching bag or go for a long, hard run. Vent your anger and hurt with someone close to you. Try to avoid doing something you would regret; just remember the person you are venting to is just trying to help. 2. ...
