This Pilot Survived 20 Minutes Outsides flying Jet
British Airways pilot Tim Lancaster, who on June 10, 1990, was sucked out of the cockpit window of his plane at an altitude of 17,300 feet (5,273 meters).
The incident occurred when a windshield on the cockpit of the British Airways Flight 5390 shattered, causing a sudden decompression that sucked Lancaster out of the cockpit. Despite being strapped in by his seatbelt, the force of the wind was so strong that it pulled him partially out of the window.
Lancaster's co-pilot managed to grab onto his legs and held onto him for over 20 minutes while the plane descended to a lower altitude. During this time, Lancaster was exposed to freezing temperatures and high-altitude conditions that would normally be fatal. However, he managed to survive the ordeal with only minor injuries, including frostbite and a broken arm.
Lancaster's survival was attributed to a combination of factors, including his physical fitness, his ability to remain calm under pressure, and the quick thinking and skill of his co-pilot. The incident led to changes in safety procedures and design for cockpit windows in commercial aircraft, and is still considered a remarkable feat of survival in aviation history.
