What happened to James Bulger? The harrowing story of the boy murdered by Jon Venables and Robert Thompson

What happened to James Bulger? The harrowing story of the boy murdered by Jon Venables and Robert Thompson

This photo was taken by a security camera in February of 1993, showing two ten year old boys abducting 3 years old James Bulger from a mall in Kirkby, England. After taking him on a 2.5 miles walk, the boys tortured and murdered him, leaving his body on some railroad tracks. The boys were found guilty of murder and became the youngest convicted murderer of the 20th century

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) at the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle on 12 February 1993 showed Thompson and Venables casually observing children, apparently selecting a target.

The boys were playing truant from their local primary school, which they did regularly. Throughout the day, Thompson and Venables were seen shoplifting various items, including sweets, batteries, a troll doll, and a can of blue Humbrol modelling paint. One of the boys later revealed that they were planning to abduct a child, lead him to the busy road alongside the shopping centre, and push him into the oncoming traffic.

That same afternoon, James Bulger, from Kirkby, went with his mother, Denise, to the New Strand Shopping Centre. Whilst inside the A.R. Tym's butcher's shop on the lower floor of the centre at around 15:40, Denise, who had let go of her son's hand to pay for her shopping, realised that her son was missing. Thompson and Venables had approached James Bulger, took him by the hand, and led him out of the shopping centre. The moment was caught on CCTV at 15:14

Thompson and Venables took Bulger to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, around 1⁄4 mile (400 metres) from the New Strand Shopping Centre, where they dropped him on his head, and he suffered injuries to his face. The boys joked about pushing Bulger into the canal.

An eyewitness said that when he saw Bulger at the canal, the boy was "crying his eyes out". The boys went on a 2+1⁄2-mile (4-kilometre) walk across Liverpool; they were seen by around 38 people, but most bystanders did nothing to intervene.[18][19] Two people challenged Thompson and Venables, but they either claimed that Bulger was their brother, or that he was lost, and that they were taking him to a police station.[20] At one point, the boys took Bulger into a pet shop, from which they were ejected.

Eventually, the boys arrived in Walton. With Walton Lane Police Station across the road, they hesitated, then led Bulger up a steep bank to a railway line near the former Walton & Anfield railway station, close to Walton Park Cemetery.[9] One of the boys threw the blue paint that they had shoplifted earlier into Bulger's left eye. They kicked him, stamped on him, and threw bricks and stones at him. They placed batteries in Bulger's mouth and may have inserted some into his anus, although none were found there. Finally, the boys dropped a 10 kg (22 lb) railway fishplate on Bulger.

He sustained 10 skull fractures as a result of the bar striking his head. Pathologist Alan Williams stated that Bulger suffered so many injuries—42 in total—that none could be identified as the fatal blow.

Thompson and Venables laid James Bulger across the railway tracks and weighted his head down with rubble, hoping that a train would hit him and his death would be ruled an accident. After they left the scene, his body was cut in half by a train. Bulger's severed body was discovered by a group of children two days later. A forensic pathologist testified that Bulger died before he was struck by the train.

Police suspected that the boys had sexually assaulted Bulger, as his shoes, socks, trousers, and underpants had been removed. The pathologist's report, which was read out in court, found that Bulger's foreskin had been forcibly pulled back. When Thompson and Venables were questioned about this aspect of the attack by detectives and a child psychiatrist, Eileen Vizard, the pair were reluctant to give details. When Venables was let out on parole, his psychiatrist, Susan Bailey, reported that "visiting and revisiting the issue with Jon as a child, and now as an adolescent, he gives no account of any sexual element to the offence."

The police quickly found low-resolution video images of Bulger's abduction from the New Strand Shopping Centre by two unidentified boys.

The railway embankment upon which his body had been discovered was soon adorned with hundreds of bunches of flowers. The family of one boy, who was detained for questioning but subsequently released, had to flee the city due to threats from vigilantes. The breakthrough came when a woman, upon seeing slightly enhanced images of the two boys on national television, recognised Venables, and remembered seeing him playing truant with Thompson in the Bootle area that day. She contacted the police, and the boys were arrested.

James Patrick Bulger (16 March 1990[2] – 12 February 1993) was a two-year-old boy from Kirkby, Merseyside, England, who was abducted, tortured, and murdered by two 10-year-old boys, Robert Thompson (born 23 August 1982) and Jon Venables (born 13 August 1982), on 12 February 1993.

Thompson and Venables led Bulger away from the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle, after his mother had taken her eyes off him momentarily. His mutilated body was found on a railway line two and a half miles (four kilometres) away in Walton, Liverpool, two days after his abduction.

Thompson and Venables were charged on 20 February 1993 with abduction and murder. They were found guilty on 24 November, making them the youngest convicted murderers in modern British history. They were sentenced to indefinite detention at Her Majesty's pleasure, and remained in custody until a Parole Board decision in June 2001 recommended their release on a lifelong licence at age 18. Venables was sent to prison in 2010 for breaching the terms of his licence, was released on parole again in 2013, and in November 2017 was again sent to prison for possessing child sexual abuse images on his computer.

The Bulger case has prompted widespread debate about how to handle young offenders when they are sentenced or released from custody

The Macabre True Story Of Edward Paisnel, The Beast Of Jersey

The Macabre True Story Of Edward Paisnel, The Beast Of Jersey Throughout the 1960s, Edward Paisnel appeared to be a pillar of his small community on the English Channel Island of Jersey. He was a family man who was devoted to his wife Joan and her young children, and he even played Santa Claus at Christmastime for the young foster children at the group home that Joan founded. But when he wasn't spending time with his family or doing good deeds, he was donning this mask and sneaking into his neighbors' homes at night in order to sexually assault women and children. It would take more than a decade for police to finally catch up with the “Beast of Jersey" as they repeatedly focused on other suspects, blind to the fact that a man like Paisnel could commit such crimes. Officers only caught him when he ran a red light one day in 1971 and they happened to see his mask sitting right there in his car. Edward Paisnel committed more than a dozen rapes and assaults in the Channel Is...

Everest climber returns to mountain to bury woman he was forced to abandon 9 years ago

Everest climber returns to mountain to bury woman he was forced to abandon 9 years ago In 2007, Ian Woodall, a British climber, returned to Everest to bury the bodies of three climbers he passed on his way to the summit. One of the climbers, a woman named Francys Arsentiev, was still alive when Woodall reached her during his initial ascent. Her first words to him were"don't leave me behind." The grim reality, though, is that Woodall could not have done anything for her without jeopardizing his own life or the lives of his team members. He was forced to leave her to perish alone. Climbing Mount Everest has become much safer over the past decade thanks to advances in technology and climbing gear. Satellite phones allow a climber to stay in contact with base camp to get constant updates on weather systems in the area. A better understanding of exactly what kind and how much gear to take has also caused the death toll to drop dramatically. She was alone on a mountain shelf wh...

Kendall Francois Murdered 8 Women In The 1990s But Never Showed Remorse When police searched the Poughkeepsie, New York home of Kendall Francois in September 1998, they never expected to find a veritable graveyard of sex workers. Stashed in the attic and the basement were the corpses of eight women, some of whom had been strangled to death so violently that their necks had been broken. At the time, Francois was only being charged with the assault of another sex worker in the area, but now authorities had enough evidence to connect him to the unsolved disappearances of each of his victims. Francois was consequently sentenced to life in prison, and shortly afterward it was discovered that he had contracted HIV from one of his victims. Go inside the macabre true story of the Poughkeepsie Killer Read on In the late 1990s, serial killer Kendall Francois murdered eight female sex workers in and around Poughkeepsie, NY. Man found dead in Amanda Park motel in 2001 positively identified as California man On September 16, 2001, a young man checked into a motel in Amanda Park, Washington under the name of Lyle Stevik. The following day, Stevik was found dead in his room. He had used his belt to hang himself in a closet and left a note that simply read “suicide.” Although after 17 long years the real identity of Lyle Stevik has been finally uncovered by Internet sleuths, the true horror and mystery are still hiding inside the Room 5. Lyle Stevik (c. 1976 – September 16, 2001) was the alias used by an American man who, in 2001, committed suicide in Amanda Park, Washington, on the Olympic Peninsula. Although his body was quickly discovered, and fingerprints, DNA, and dental information collected and recorded, there were no matches in any databases and his identity remained unknown until 2018. On May 8, 2018, the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office announced that "Stevik" was identified after a...

The 1904 Olympic Marathon May Have Been the Strangest Ever

The 1904 Olympic Marathon May Have Been the Strangest Ever In 1904, St. Louis hosted the Olympic Games as part of the World’s Fair—and produced a spectacle that incorporated all the mischief of the midway The 1904 Olympic marathon in St. Louis was by far the wildest event in the games' history. Not only were the runners up against a hilly course on a 92-degree day, but some were chased by a pack of wild dogs and all of them were denied water.
