‘Killing the Devil’: 52 years after murdering young men, Candy Man among Texas’ worst serial killers

Jeffrey Konen was 18 years old when he disappeared from the Houston Heights area on Sept. 25, 1970. He had been hitchhiking from the University of Texas to his parent’s home in Houston.

Three years later, his naked body was found buried at High Island Beach under a large boulder. His hands and feet were bound, and he was wrapped in plastic and covered in a layer of lime.

He died of asphyxiation after a cloth was placed in his mouth, and he was manually strangled.

Konen was the first known victim of the infamous Candy Man serial killer.

This Candy Man didn’t have a hook for a hand and a swarm of bees at his disposal like in Bernard Rose’s 1992 horror classic with the same name. Instead, the real-life killer, named Dean Arnold Corll, was much more terrifying.

Corll was given the nickname for being known as the “pleasant, smiling candy man of the Heights,” who would give candy to children who stopped by his family’s factory, the Corll Candy Co., according to Texas Monthly.

From December 1970 to July 1973, Corll abducted, raped, tortured and murdered at least 28 young men from the Houston and Pasadena areas. He would lure teenagers and young adults to one of his many residences by saying he was having a party or offering them a ride.

From December 1970 to July 1973, Corll abducted, raped, tortured and murdered at least 28 young men from the Houston and Pasadena areas. He would lure teenagers and young adults to one of his many residences by saying he was having a party or offering them a ride.

Corll had two teenage accomplices, 18-year-old David Owen Brooks and 17-year-old Elmer Wayne Henley, who helped lure the victims to Corll’s residences. Multiple reports said the two teens, who were sentenced to life in prison, participated in the sadistic acts before helping Corll bury the bodies.

The victims ranged in age from 13 to 20, and many of them were acquaintances of Brooks or Henley or had worked at the candy company. Eleven of the victims had attended the same junior high school, according to Texas Monthly.

Corll befriended Brooks in 1967, who was 12 at the time, and after about two years, the pair started a sexual relationship, although Brooks said he wasn’t gay and saw Corll as a father figure.

Just after Konen’s murder, Brooks walked in on Corll sexually assaulting two teenage boys who were strapped to a bed. Instead of turning Corll in, Brooks was given a Chevrolet Corvette in exchange for his silence. Corll later told the boy that he had killed the two teenagers and offered Brooks $200 — equivalent to about $1,400 in 2022 — for each boy that he could bring to Corll.

Henley was recruited in 1971 after Brooks lured him to Corll’s apartment likely to be killed, but instead Corll offered Henley the same deal he made with Brooks. Henley initially refused but changed his mind months later because his family was in dire financial circumstances.

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying Flaying — better known as “skinning alive” — has a long and grotesque history. Records of the practice exist as far back as the Neo-Assyrian Empire (beginning in 911 B.C.), but it has cropped up in most civilizations at one time or another, including Medieval Europe (where it tended to be used as a punishment for traitors) and in the ritual human sacrifices made by the Aztecs in Mexico (the Aztecs, at least, are believed to have skinned the body after the sacrifice had been made). Various techniques have been utilized in the many different cultures in which flaying has been employed, but the basis remains the same: Slowly, excruciatingly slicing the skin from the body while keeping the victim alive for as long as possible (and when feasible, removing the skin intact). Rendering Of Flaying Wikimedia Commons Carvings from the Assyrian period show the process beginning with incisions to the thighs or buttocks, while the European method — pictured...

The Macabre True Story Of Edward Paisnel, The Beast Of Jersey

The Macabre True Story Of Edward Paisnel, The Beast Of Jersey Throughout the 1960s, Edward Paisnel appeared to be a pillar of his small community on the English Channel Island of Jersey. He was a family man who was devoted to his wife Joan and her young children, and he even played Santa Claus at Christmastime for the young foster children at the group home that Joan founded. But when he wasn't spending time with his family or doing good deeds, he was donning this mask and sneaking into his neighbors' homes at night in order to sexually assault women and children. It would take more than a decade for police to finally catch up with the “Beast of Jersey" as they repeatedly focused on other suspects, blind to the fact that a man like Paisnel could commit such crimes. Officers only caught him when he ran a red light one day in 1971 and they happened to see his mask sitting right there in his car. Edward Paisnel committed more than a dozen rapes and assaults in the Channel Is...

She poisoned 21 people including her own mother, children and husbands. So why has no-one heard of Britain's FIRST serial killer, Mary Ann Cotton?

She poisoned 21 people including her own mother, children and husbands. So why has no-one heard of Britain's FIRST serial killer, Mary Ann Cotton? The motivating factor behind Mary Ann Cotton seemed to be money, but it was surely not the final motive of her evil deeds. Mary Ann Cotton was responsible for the deaths of three of her four husbands, and she is thought to have murdered 21 victims in all, which includes eleven of her 13 children as well as her own mother. The main instrument she used for her murders was arsenic poisoning, which caused great gastric pain and the speedy decline of life force in her victims. After a 20-year long spree of mysterious murders surrounding Cotton’s life, she was eventually arrested and put on trial in 1873. Mary Ann Cotton was convicted of the murder of three of her husbands and was sentenced to death by hanging. The execution was not a smooth one; Cotton’s trap door proved to be too short, and she writhed wildly at the end of her rope until she...

Shocking vintage pictures of Times Square at the height of its depravity in the 1970s and 1980s

Shocking vintage pictures of Times Square at the height of its depravity in the 1970s and 1980s In the 1970s and 1980s, Times Square was known for its peep shows, open drug trade, porn shops, con games, and widespread prostitution. It was also one of the most dangerous areas of New York City, with over 2,300 crimes committed per year in a one-block radius by 1984. At one point, Rolling Stone even called it the "sleaziest block in America." But today, it's a family-friendly tourist destination with Disney characters, a massive Olive Garden, and a Madame Tussauds wax museum. While a handful of adult entertainment stores remain in the area, they've been largely relegated to the shadows, a faint reminder of Broadway's sordid past. From Times Square to the trenches of World War I, see 22 historic places then and now by clicking the link in our profile. From the 1960s to the late 1980s, New York City’s iconic Times Square was a difficult place to be.
