Joe Arridy was a man who lived in Pueblo, Colorado and his parents were Syrian. While growing up, Joe displayed signs that he was severely intellectually disabled. He began to talk a lot later than the average toddler and he could not form long sentences, instead he spoke a few words at a time. In psychology, this can be a sign that cognitive capabilites in a child are low, which means problem solving, counting, understanding basic concepts and knowing right from wrong will often be very challenging for that individual. Joe attended one year of elementary school before being pulled out as it was too difficult for him. Joe's father then admitted him to the State Home. Joe lived here on and off for a few years. It was also reported that Joe was mistreated and often beaten by the local neighbourhood kids. Joe, at the age of 21, left Pueblo and arrived in Cheyenne Wyoming where he lived in a rail yard in 1936.
During the time when he arrived there, 15 year old Dorothy and 12 year old Barbara Drain were attacked in their house with an axe. Dorothy was also raped during this attack and died, but Barbara survived.
Joe was arrested for vagrancy and brought in for questioning. When asked about the attack, Joe was manipulated by police to say that he was guilty when in fact he was not.
A man called Frank Aguilar committed the crime. Aguilar said that Joe was not at the crime scene and that he didn't even know him. Joe was again manipulated to say he assisted Aguilar for the crime. He confessed to the crime twice, both false confessions.
At his trial, he went under psychological tests that showed he had the IQ of 46 and that could not perform an action and knowing it was a criminal offence. Barbara Drain even said during the trial that Joe was not at the scene.
During his time in prison, warden Roy Best took care of him. Joe had a train and was said to be "the happiest prisoner on death row" as he had no idea that he was going to die. Joe was executed in January 1939.
