The blood is still visible
During the late summer of 1600, the Fushimi Castle in Kyoto, Japan, was besieged.
Here, a garrison of 2000 men led by Torii Mototada held out for 11 days against an overwhelming force of 40 000 men led by Ishida Mitsunari.
Constant chaos and civil war had raged for 150 years when the Sengoku-period was in its final years.
It wouldn't take long until the country entered more peaceful times(Edo-period) when Tokugawa Ieyasus unified all of Japan under his rule and established the Tokugawa shogunate after defeating his biggest rival, Ishida Mitsunari.
Torii Mototada was loyal to Tokugawa Ieyasu and they both engaged in a series of battles against Ishida Mitsunari and his allies that would lead up to a large and final clash, The Battle of Sekigahara, in october 1600.
The siege of Fushimi Castle was one of the battles fought prior to that.
Torii knew that a battle at this place would end in defeat, but chose to stay and defend the castle to delay Ishida and his army. This gave Tokugawa strategic advantages and more time to gather all of his forces to fight and defeat Ishida at Sekigahara.
After heavy fighting the enemy managed to decimate the garrison to the point where no more resistance could be made.
Characterized by the samurai codex, Torii and around ten other samurais chose to commit seppuku.
Seppuku is a form of ritual suicide by
plunging a short blade into the stomach and slicing it open. In many cases another samurai is behind, ready to behead or cut the throat of the person. This can be seen on the staged pictures.
The wooden floor where they carried out the ritual was painted red by blood. Hands and feet created bloody marks while they drew their last breath in all the blood which later dried, leaving permanent marks.
The blood stained floor was later incorporated as ceiling in several temples around Kyoto. This was done to honor those who gave their lives and to let their souls rest on a peaceful place.
The cealing speaks to us about what happened in the final moments of the lives of these samurais over 400 years
