Linda Pugach, the woman who married her lover after he hired hitmen who blinded her, dies aged 75
Linda Riss was scarred and blinded by her ex-boyfriend, Burton Pugach, who hired three hitmen to throw lye in her face when she ended their relationship. Pugach served 14 years of jail time, and when he was released, the two married and remained married for many years.
Linda Riss was a 22-year-old dark-haired woman from the Bronx who was often described as a lookalike of Elizabeth Taylor. She fell for a successful older man named Burton Pugach and was in a relationship with him for three years until she found out he was married and a father of a three-year-old girl.
She ended the relationship, but that did not go well with Pugach. He demanded that she marry him and warned her about the consequences if she didn’t. He even stated that if he can’t have her, then no one else can.
In June 1959, when Pugach found out she was engaged to another man, he hired three assailants to attack her. The assailants threw lye on her face, which left her blind in one eye and nearly blind in the other. She was also permanently scarred. Pugach was convicted for the crime and spent 14 years in prison, but this did not deter him from relentlessly communicating and professing his love for her.
When he was released, he proposed to her during an interview with the local TV station, and Linda agreed. To her, this was the best revenge she could get. They married in November 1974 and remained married until her death in 2013.
