A Pennsylvania Woman Who Has Been Missing For 31 Years Was Just Found In A Puerto Rico Nursing Home

"We really thought she was dead all those years."

When 52-year-old Patricia Kopta went missing in the summer of 1992, her family assumed she'd run off to avoid being admitted to a mental health facility. Kopta reportedly showed signs of schizophrenia and often spoke about her visions of angels and the end of the world. Her husband, Bob, thought she may have gone to Puerto Rico, as she'd previously spoken about moving to the island. He even placed an ad in a Puerto Rican newspaper in an attempt to find her, but he didn't hear anything about her for more than 30 years and assumed she was dead — until now. Learn the full story of the 83-year-old woman who just turned up in a Puerto Rico nursing home more than three decades after she suddenly vanished

Patricia Kopta was a Pittsburgh street preacher known as "The Sparrow" who mysteriously vanished in 1992.

In 1992, Patricia Kopta went missing. Her family had no idea what happened to her, and for over three decades, it seemed as if they never would. Then, in a surprising turn of events 31 years later, Patricia Kopta was found — 1,700 miles away in a Puerto Rican nursing home.

A social worker at the adult care home identified the now-83-year-old Kopta after she shared pieces of information about her past. It’s not clear what exactly she said or even how she got to the nursing home in the first place, but the three-decade mystery of what happened to Patrica Kopta has finally come to an end.

“You wouldn’t believe what we’ve been through,” her husband, Bob Kopta, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “It’s such a relief to know she’s alive.”

Kopta described his wife as a typical Roman Catholic suburbanite, at least early on in their marriage. During the week, she commuted to work in Pittsburgh. On weekends, she worshiped at church and attended ballroom dancing events.

But as time went on, Bob Kopta began to notice strange behavior, and she became more zealous in her religious beliefs. Eventually, this turned into nonsensical ranting and claims that the Virgin Mary had appeared to her and warned her of an impending nuclear armageddon.

“Something must have happened. Somebody got to her because she started on this whole ‘the world is going to end’ thing,” Bob Kopta said. “She lost her job and started hanging around downtown. When there was a baseball game going on, when a concert was going on, she’d be telling everybody to go home because the world was going to end in three days.”

Kopta was a short, wiry woman with an erratic gait. Those who saw her downtown called her “The Sparrow.”

As described in a 1998 Post-Gazette piece, “The Sparrow was a fixture at Gateway Center, on the streets of Oakland, outside Three Rivers [Stadium] and sometimes in the middle of McKnight Road, where she’d lean into open car windows at traffic lights and inform startled drivers of God’s impending wrath… Her absence has been noted incrementally in the city.”

Sometime around 1991 or 1992, a group of girls mugged Patricia Kopta and stole her wedding and engagement rings. Kopta herself had numerous encounters with the police, including an arrest in Monroeville that led doctors to describe her as having “delusions of grandeur” and symptoms of schizophrenia.

Then, one day in 1992, Bob Kopta returned home to find that his wife was gone.

“She had made statements to other family individuals that she was leaving, that she was concerned that she was going to be placed into a care facility here,” said Ross Township Police Chief Brian Kohlhepp, according to The New York Times.

“It was hard on all of us because we — my mother, my sister, and myself — we worried about her constantly,” said Kopta’s younger sister, Gloria Smith.

Eventually, authorities declared Patricia Kopta legally dead. Her husband never remarried.

Meanwhile, in 1999, nursing home employees found Kopta wandering the streets of Puerto Rico. She wouldn’t tell them anything about her life, just that she had made it to the island via a cruise ship from Europe. That claim could not be confirmed.

Then, as Kopta began aging and developed dementia, she started revealing more about her past. Eventually, she “leaked enough details about her identity that [her caretakers] were able to connect enough dots to contact us,” Kohlhepp said.

Ross police then began a nine-month forensic process to confirm her identity. Puerto Rican authorities sent over a swab of Kopta’s DNA, police located her dental records, and Kopta’s sister and nephew provided cheek swab DNA samples to compare.

“These were processed and revealed that the woman in Puerto Rico is indeed Patricia Kopta, alive and well for her advanced age and condition,” Kohlhepp said.

“After 30 years, you try to forget about it,” Bob Kopta said. “Now, I can forget about it. We know what happened, and she is taken care of now.”

Bob Kopta and Gloria Smith said they would love to bring Patricia Kopta home and reunite the family, but her declining health makes it difficult to do so. Smith also said she is considering traveling to Puerto Rico to visit her sister, even if she wouldn’t be recognized due to Kopta’s dementia.

“She could have come home any time,” Bob Kopta said. “But… that’s what she wanted. She always said she wanted to go to a warm climate.”

After learning about Patricia Kopta, read the story of Jacob Wetterling, the missing boy whose case remained unsolved for 27 years. Or, learn about the Indiana woman who claimed to have DNA evidence that she is Brittany Renee Williams, the girl who went missing in 2000.

Florida's Messiest Execution

Florida's Messiest Execution On July 8, 1999, the execution of Allen Lee Davis set off a shock wave that rippled around the world. During his time in the electric chair, Davis bled profusely from the nose and suffered burns to his head, leg, and groin area. As the switch was thrown, the “Tiny” Davis, who was executed for the May 11, 1982, murder of Nancy Weiler and her two daughters, reared back against the restraints, giving witnesses a chilling glimpse under a black hood designed to hide the faces of the condemned. Blood poured from his vivid purple nose, ran down the wide leather strap that covered his mouth and soaked the white shirt. After the power was turned off, Davis was still alive. Witnesses said his chest rose and fell about 10 times before he went still. After the execution, state prison officials and Governor Jeb Bush said the Old Sparky functioned properly. Three photos of the incident have been published on Florida’s High Court official website in an attempt to argu...

From Chantal Uren. This is my story

From Chantal Uren. This is my story... My name is Chantal, I'm a 37 year old Police Officer from Western Australia and I had a severe reaction after receiving the Pfizer vaccine. To the people who threatened me with defamation charges and disciplinary action for telling my story, I am disappointed. I'm disappointed that your priority is to silence me for your own ego and agenda rather than ask if I'm ok and offer me any help! At no time have you asked if I'm ok or cared for a second about my health or welfare. You decided that putting me under more stress, when that stress can cause further risk to my life is your priority. It makes me question humanity and how any person can have such a lack of empathy towards another.  If defamation and disciplinary action is what you deem suitable than I'm not afraid. I've done nothing wrong, I did what you wanted and look what happened. No one has the right to take away anyone else's experiences or tell them how they sho...

After Germany's surrender in May 1945, millions of German soldiers remained prisoners of war. In France, their internment lasted a particularly long time. But, for some former soldiers, it was a path to rehabilitation. French units lost out to US soldiers in the last meters of the race to reach Adolf Hitler's destroyed Alpine headquarters, the Berghof. But French troops in southern Germany in early May 1945 nonetheless made good progress, capturing one town after the other. After four years of Nazi occupation, France, under General Charles de Gaulle, joined the ultimately victorious Allied powers in 1944. And the country made sure the defeated German natio...

A river pirate who killed at least 6 people, including stabbed the victim in the eye, is facing his execution in China in 1900 A river pirate is a pirate who operates along a river. It stands on stones or wooden beams. Every day 1 will take off with his head on top. He will eventually have nothing to stand on and suffocate to death. On a sunny winter day some three centuries ago, British warships fired their cannons in celebration as Lieutenant Robert Maynard sailed up the James River upon his return to Virginia. Any questions as to the success of his covert mission to subdue one of history’s most notorious pirates were answered at the...

How Serial Killer Albert Fish’s Letter To The Parents Of One Of His Victims Finally Landed Him In Prison

How Serial Killer Albert Fish’s Letter To The Parents Of One Of His Victims Finally Landed Him In Prison In 1934, Albert Fish wrote a letter to Grace Budd’s mother and described how he'd murdered her before cutting her into pieces and eating her flesh. "Dear Mrs. Budd, On June 3, 1928, I called on you at 406 W. 15 St. and brought you pot cheese and strawberries. We had lunch. Grace sat on my lap and kissed me. I made up my mind to eat her." Grace Budd had been missing for six years when her mother received this disturbing note in the mail. It detailed exactly how her 10-year-old daughter had been abducted, murdered, and then roasted like a turkey. Though the letter was unsigned, investigators were eventually able to trace it back to a gray-haired old man named Albert Fish.  While plenty of Americans spent the Roaring Twenties at wild parties, Albert Fish developed a taste for human flesh. Known as the “Brooklyn Vampire,” he lured children into abandoned homes to kill them...

Thankful Quotes and Appreciation Saying (By Kate)

Thankful Quotes and Appreciation Saying (By Kate) In life, there is always something to be thankful for. It’s easy to complain about how chaotic the world is and how people can be so evil towards one another, but complaining without action just doesn’t change anything. If we start to be thankful for everything we have, instead of what we do not have, we’ll start to appreciate our life on this earth more. Simple things such as being able to walk, eat, see, hear – these are just some of the many gifts that were given to us so freely. Sometimes it’s just a matter of how we view things. We may hate our bosses at work, but guess what? We have a job. We may not like the leftovers we have in our fridge, but guess what? We have food. We may hate the traffic every single day, but guess what? We still made it to our destination safe and sound. If we choose to look at the brighter side of life, we will discover the countless small things we sometimes take for granted but have so much value if we ...

A GUIDE TO MAGICAL CALCATA, AND TO THE MYSTERIOUS ATMOSPHERE THAT SURROUNDS IT

Very ancient village, Calcata, Roma, Italia,  finds its origins in the prehistoric era, during which, it seems, it was already inhabited.  Then it became an important outpost of the Falisca civilization in Roman times.  Still, in the outskirts of the town, there are ruins of the city of Narce, with a Faliscan temple at the base and the necropolis of Pizzo Piede. The first news of Calcata as an inhabited center, however, dates back to the Middle Ages.  For the first time the name Calcata appears in a document dated 772-795.  Even today some medieval ruins are still visible in the village and its surroundings.  Over the years, then, Calcata experienced periods of great solitude, until 1935 when it was deemed unfit for use: it remained deserted for about 30 years.  In the 1960s, once again deemed safe, Calcata returned to be inhabited.  It was a group of artists and hippies who, struck by this village suspended in time and far from the city, decided ...

Reasons Why There Is A High Rate Of Divorce

Marriage is not as the way it used to be. Compare today's marriage to when our parents and grandparents got wedded.   D ivorce is now on the rise. People have come to accept it as an almost inevitable part of life. The fear of going through a divorce has been mitigated. Note also that people still marry for the very same reasons that older generations for, but the rate of divorce today is of increase and the following are the reasons among others 1. Men are Sexists and Chauvinistic in nature Most men are sexists and chauvinistic in nature therefore making them selfish and loathe independent women. They make denigrating remarks about women and you don't expect a serious, logical and virtuous woman to remain with such a rètarded being. Women in other hand, are peace loving and cool but their anti-feminism husband keeps antagonising them and they don't have an option but divorce him. There's no ONE reason for the high rates of marriage failure these days. Rather, I believe...
