Archaeologists Just Stumbled Across An Unexploded Civil War Artillery Shell At Gettysburg

Archaeologists Just Stumbled Across An Unexploded Civil War Artillery Shell At Gettysburg

Though the shell was destroyed, historians suspect that it was fired by Confederate forces on July 2, 1863.

While sweeping the grounds of Gettysburg National Military Park as part of a rehabilitation project, an archaeologist detected something buried beneath the earth with his metal detector — and two feet down, he came across a 10-pound artillery shell from the Civil War. Realizing that it was likely live, he laid it down on the ground gently, snapped a photo, and "ran for the hills."
Experts then visited the park to examine the 160-year-old ordnance, and after identifying it as a Burton round likely fired by Confederate troops from a Parrott cannon or 3-inch ordnance rifle during the Battle of Gettysburg, they swiftly destroyed it as a safety measure — read more at the link in our profile.

While sweeping the grounds of Gettysburg National Military Park as part of a rehabilitation project, archaeologist Steven Brann detected something buried beneath the earth with his metal detector. Two feet down, he came across an intact shell from the Civil War.

Brann, used to finding small objects like buttons or old bullets, carefully dug the ordnance out of the ground. Then, the archaeologist fled.

“He laid it gently on the ground, took a picture of it, and ran for the hills,” Jason Martz, spokesman for Gettysburg National Military Park, told CNN.

Park officials then called in the Army’s 55th Ordnance Company, stationed nearby at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, who came to the park to examine the object. They studied it, put it in a hole with C-4 explosives, and detonated it.

“Safety protocols call for us to assume it is live,” Martz said, and CNN noted that destroying historical ammunition is standard procedure, as it’s often too difficult to make such artifacts safe enough to put on display.

That said, historians do have some educated guesses about who fired the ordnance during the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863.

Live Science reports that the ordnance was discovered near Little Round Top, a hill at Gettysburg that offered Union troops a strategic position during the pivotal battle, which lasted from July 1 until July 3. On July 2, Union and Confederates fought fiercely for control of the hill, which is when historians suspect that the ordnance was fired.

The Army’s 55th Ordnance Company determined that the ordnance was a Burton round, according to CNN, which would have been fired from a Parrott cannon or 3-inch ordnance rifle.

Park officials stated that the round could not have come from Union canons, which means that Confederate forces likely fired it. But because the fighting at Little Top Hill was so intense, the ordnance could have also been a case of Confederate friendly fire.

“We ourselves would like to know as much as we can, so we can tell this story when we are doing ranger programs,” Martz told CNN. “It is possible that Confederate artillery fired upon Confederate infantry.”

Wherever the ordnance came from, it represents one small part of the larger story of Gettysburg. That battle ended in a Union victory, dashing Southern hopes of invading the North, forcing a peace deal, and ending the conflict. Instead, the Civil War would drag on for two more years.

And some are annoyed that the park decided to destroy such a valuable piece of American history.

The Gettysburg National Park posted about the ordnance’s discovery — and destruction — on Facebook, arousing the ire of many users who believed that the artillery shell should have been saved.

“Ironic that a national military park who wants to preserve the battlefield, would destroy a relic from that very battle. This could have easily been displayed at the park,” wrote one user, according to CNN.

Indeed, the ordnance found at Gettysburg is a historic treasure — the Washington Post reports that just five artillery shells have been discovered at Gettysburg since 1980. Martz acknowledged that it was a “rare find, for sure,” and that its destruction ensured that “we’re never going to know whether the thing was live or not.”

The ordnance represents a piece of American history, but safety regulations demanded its destruction.

But safety regulations demanded its destruction, and park officials hope that its mere existence can remind people of the true, human stakes of Gettysburg.

“[I]t reminds us that it was all real,” Chris Gwinn, chief of interpretation at the park, told CNN. “The battle really happened and beneath the veneer of this beautiful national park are the tangible reminders of its ferocity and tragedy. Finds like this help connect people to the past and make it a real, three-dimensional place.”

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying Flaying — better known as “skinning alive” — has a long and grotesque history. Records of the practice exist as far back as the Neo-Assyrian Empire (beginning in 911 B.C.), but it has cropped up in most civilizations at one time or another, including Medieval Europe (where it tended to be used as a punishment for traitors) and in the ritual human sacrifices made by the Aztecs in Mexico (the Aztecs, at least, are believed to have skinned the body after the sacrifice had been made). Various techniques have been utilized in the many different cultures in which flaying has been employed, but the basis remains the same: Slowly, excruciatingly slicing the skin from the body while keeping the victim alive for as long as possible (and when feasible, removing the skin intact). Rendering Of Flaying Wikimedia Commons Carvings from the Assyrian period show the process beginning with incisions to the thighs or buttocks, while the European method — pictured...

The Twisted Saga Of Michael Peterson, Kathleen Peterson, And The Real Story Behind ‘The Staircase’

The Twisted Saga Of Michael Peterson, Kathleen Peterson, And The Real Story Behind ‘The Staircase’ In 2003, Michael Peterson was convicted of killing his wife Kathleen by beating her with a fire poker and throwing her down their back staircase — despite the police never finding the murder weapon nor any evidence of a concrete motive. But investigators soon learned that the Petersons were deep in debt and that Michael was unhappy with the way his work as a writer had stalled while his wife's career as a business executive had soared. And when prosecutors learned that Michael had exchanged emails with a male sex worker, they argued that Kathleen must have discovered the messages and confronted him about it, causing him to fly into a fit of rage, beat her about the back of the head, and leave her to die at the bottom of the stairs. But six years after Michael's conviction, a shocking new analysis showed that Kathleen Peterson had traces of feathers, wood, and cedar needle...

Leonard “Len” Keith and Joseph “Cub” Coates fell for each other in early 20th-century New Brunswick, at a time and place where queer relationships were taboo. Their story was almost lost forever—until a collection of tender photographs brought their romance into the light. Len was born in 1891, and Cub was born 8 years later. They grew up in the rural New Brunswick village of Havelock in the early 20th century. The two were neighbors, and they clearly developed an inseparable relationship. Len was an amateur photographer and automobile enthusiast who went on to own a local garage and poolhall after serving in the First World War. Cub was the son of a farmer, also a veteran of the First World War, a butcher, contractor, and lover of horses. Their time together is catalogued by Len’s photos, which show that the two shared a mutual love of the outdoors, animals, and adventure. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Chester Nimitz was in Washington, D.C., serving as head of the Navy's Bureau of Navigation. But just 10 days later, President Roosevelt fired the former head of the Pacific Fleet for his failure to prevent the attack and promoted Nimitz, sending him to Hawaii in civilian clothes and carrying classified damage reports hidden in his wife's sewing bag to avoid the detection of potential spies. With most of the Pacific Fleet destroyed and no functional battleships, the Navy was vastly outgunned by Japan. But Nimitz quickly consolidated the remaining fleet including aircraft carriers and pivoted to fighting naval battles in the skies while awaiting the construction of new battleships. And within just six months, he'd won two decisive batt...
