Chris Benoit's Gruesome End Remains a Horrifying Chapter in Professional in Wrestling

Chris Benoit and his wife Nancy were one of the most iconic couples in professional wrestling. Known as the "Canadian Crippler" and "Woman," the pair had met while working for World Championship Wrestling and married in 2000. Later, Benoit's wife was often seen at his WWE matches, where he was famous for his head-butting moves and taking folding chairs to the head.

But behind the scenes, Benoit was taking testosterone enhancers, estrogen blockers, and steroids. And by 2007, his behavior had become unpredictable, fluctuating between quiet reclusiveness and explosive rage. Then, over a weekend in June, Benoit suddenly killed his wife and their seven-year-old son at his home before hanging himself on a weight lifting machine. An autopsy later found that Benoit had 10 times the normal amount of testosterone in his system and that his brain "was so severely damaged it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient," leading some to believe that the murders were caused by his wrestling career itself.

In the 1990s, Chris Benoit was considered one of the most famous athletes in the World Championship Wrestling and the World Wrestling Federation. But, by the turn of the century his story turned tragic, and ended in a horrifying murder-suicide that rattled the wrestling community.

This week, VICE TV's Dark Side of the Ring kicks off its second season, which delves into Benoit's devastating story. The series follows his rise and fall in wrestling which ended with him murdering his wife and child and his death by suicide. The episodes, debuting on March 24 and 25, include new information and commentary from fellow wrestlers who knew Benoit well, but for those unaware about the story, the details alone are a shocking tale all on its own.

In 2000, Benoit married his second wife, Nancy. They had one child together in 2003. In the early years of his marriage, Nancy filed for a divorce from the wrestler and got a restraining order, citing that he had exhibited violent behavior around the home. At the time, the marriage was said to be "irrevocably broken," though eventually she decided to drop both the divorce suit and restraining order.

Back on the wrestling scene, Benoit was taking steroids and testosterone that were not approved for WWE use. Several other WWE wrestlers were found to have been using the same illegal steroids, and at the time, the abuse and the dangers of these drugs became a major story in professional wrestling.

The Crimes

By June 25, 2007, Benoit had missed a number of events scheduled to take place over the weekend prior. The WWE requested a welfare check on the then 40-year-old Benoit. Upon arriving at his Georgia home, authorities found Benoit’s wife, Nancy, wrapped in a towel. She had died from asphyxiation. Their son was also found, also dead, apparently strangled. Benoit placed a Bible next to each of their bodies.

The scene where authorities discovered Benoit's body was most haunting; the wrestler was hanged on a lat pulldown machine, with a Bible lying on the weight machine beside him. There were also allegedly 10 empty beer cans and an empty bottle of wine. Authorities determined that the murders and suicide were committed over the course of three days.

A Damning Autopsy
Autopsy results showed that Benoit might have drugged his son with Xanax before the murder, rendering him unconscious beforehand. Nancy had trace amounts of alprazolam and hydrocodone in her system, but at minimal enough level that doctors didn’t deem it to be in direct connection to the crimes. Benoit’s toxicology report was much more severe. Xanax, hydrocodone, and a very high level of testosterone were found in Benoit’s system.

Further autopsy results scanning Benoit’s brain function were startling. Questions regarding the toll of the concussions he’d incurred while in the league began to be raised. One report from West Virginia University showed, “Benoit's brain was so severely damaged it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient.” A number of experts have suggested that this might have been what prompted the double murder-suicide.

Since the case was closed, Benoit’s name and career has been scrubbed from the WWE website.

The corpse of Madame Debeinche, who was murdered in her Paris apartment on May 5, 1903, lay completely motionless

You are looking at one of the first crime scene photos ever taken The corpse of Madame Debeinche, who was murdered in her Paris apartment on May 5, 1903, lay completely motionless. Her photo is one of thousands snapped by Alphonse Bertillon, a police clerk in Paris who revolutionized detective work. Not only was Bertillon the first to photograph a crime scene, but he also streamlined the use of mugshots. By 1884, his groundbreaking new criminal codification method helped catch 241 repeat offenders in Paris. At first glance, the faded 1903 photograph of Mme Debeinche’s bedroom, bound in the yellowed pages of an early 20th-century album, shows what looks to be an unremarkable middle-class Parisian apartment of the time. The overstuffed room brims with floral decoration, from the wallpaper and heavy swag curtains to the carpeting, chair upholstery—even the chamber pot. A large reproduction of Alexandre Cabanel’s voluptuous 1863 painting, “Birth of Venus,” hangs on the wall. A sizeable unm...

"It took them about 15 minutes. "Unfortunately, although they rescued my date unharmed from what must have been a rather unpleasant confined space to find yours...

Learning to let go is necessary because life will go on with or without your partner. Moving on is not easy, but it is possible. This article provides a number of steps to help you move forward and successfully get over a relationship. 1. Understand your own feelings. Denial doesn’t solve anything. Ignored emotions will only make you calloused and afraid. - If you need to cry, do so. Crying clears your mind and helps you vent your emotions. Repression never helps anyone, so be honest about your ever-changing feelings. - If you don't feel like crying, maybe head to the gym and find an available punching bag or go for a long, hard run. Vent your anger and hurt with someone close to you. Try to avoid doing something you would regret; just remember the person you are venting to is just trying to help. 2. ...

Meet Tenzing Norgay, The ‘Unsung Hero’ Of The First Successful Summit Of Mount Everest Edmund Hillary was the first person to climb Mount Everest, but he couldn't have done it without Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. Born in the Himalayas, Tenzing Norgay grew up revering the "mighty mountain" of Everest and the "goddess of the summit." Though his father gave him a name that means "wealthy fortunate follower of religion" in hopes that he would become a monk, Norgay dreamt of being a mountaineer. He ran away from home multiple times to hike among the peaks, and eventually joined his first official mountaineering expedition at age 20 in 1935. By the time he was 40 years old, he had spent more time on the face of Mount Everest than any other person alive. So, when a British expedition was looking for local guides in an attempt to reach the summit, they turned to Norgay. And on May 29, 1953, Norgay and New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary became the first peopl...
