How John C. Woods Lied His Way Into Hanging Hitler's Top Nazis

How John C. Woods Lied His Way Into Hanging Hitler's Top Nazis

Master Sergeant John C. Woods was an American executioner assigned to hang 10 Nazi leaders during the Nuremberg executions in 1946. Of the 10 men he was charged with hanging, at least 7 of them weren’t killed by a broken neck, which is how a hanging is supposed to work.⠀
“Those Nazis were bad, bad men. So what if it took longer for them to die. Maybe they should have thought of that as they were sending people to concentration camps." ⠀
U.S. Army hangman John C. Woods was a psychopath who lied his way into becoming the executioner at Nuremberg — and did everything in his power to ensure that the condemned Nazi leaders suffered until their last breath.⠀

John Clarence Woods (June 5, 1911 – July 21, 1950) was a United States Army master sergeant who, with Joseph Malta, carried out the Nuremberg executions of ten former top leaders of the Third Reich on October 16, 1946, after they were sentenced to death at the Nuremberg trials. Time magazine credited him with 347 executions to that date during a 15-year career. According to later research, a number of 60 to 70 over a period of two years is more credible.

Born in Wichita, Kansas, Woods joined the U.S. Navy on December 3, 1929, and went absent without leave within months. He was convicted at a general court martial and subsequently examined by a psychiatric board on April 23, 1930. He was diagnosed with "Constitutional Psychopathic Inferiority without Psychosis", was found "poor service material" and discharged. Before being inducted into the United States Army in August 1943, Woods was intermittently employed in construction as a laborer, and was working part-time at a feed-store in Eureka, Kansas, when he was registered for Selective Service in 1940. He married a nurse, Hazel Chilcott,[3] but had no children.

Before D-Day, U.S. military executions by hanging in the European Theater of Operations occurred in Southern England only and were performed by the civilian executioner Thomas Pierrepoint with assistance by Albert Pierrepoint (his nephew) and other British personnel. When in autumn of 1944 military executions by hanging were scheduled in France, the Army looked for a volunteer enlisted hangman and found Woods, who falsely claimed previous experience as assistant hangman in two cases in Texas and two in Oklahoma. There is no evidence that the U.S. Army made any attempt to verify Woods's claims—if they had checked, it would have been easy to prove that he was lying; the states of Texas and Oklahoma had both switched to electrocution during the period he claimed to be a hangman. The last hanging in Texas took place in August 1923 when Woods would have been twelve. Oklahoma did not carry out hangings during the relevant period, the last one taking place three months before Woods was born. There was a single hanging in 1936 under federal jurisdiction, and all other executions in Oklahoma between 1915 and 1966 were carried out by electric chair.

In fact, Woods had no documented pre-war experience as a hangman. Woods at that time was a private and a member of the 37th Engineer Combat Battalion. He was promoted to master sergeant and transferred to Paris Disciplinary Training Center.[5] Woods performed as the primary executioner in the hangings of 34 U.S. soldiers at various locations in France over 1944–1945, and assisted in at least three others. U.S. Army reports suggest that Woods participated in at least 11 bungled hangings of U.S. soldiers between 1944 and 1946.[citation needed]

Woods also participated in the execution of about 45 war criminals at various locations which included Rheinbach, Bruchsal, Landsberg, and Nuremberg. Donald E. Wilkes Jr., a professor of law at the University of Georgia Law School, wrote that many of the Nazis executed at Nuremberg fell from the gallows with a drop insufficient to snap their necks, resulting in their death by strangulation that in some cases lasted several minutes.

After the Nuremberg executions, Woods stated:

I hanged those ten Nazis and I am proud of it . I wasn't nervous. A fellow can't afford to have nerves in this business. I want to put in a good word for those G.I.s who helped me. they all did swell. I am trying to get [them] a promotion. The way I look at this hanging job, somebody has to do it. I got into it kind of by accident, years ago in the States ...

While serving with the 7th Engineer Brigade in Eniwetok, Marshall Islands, on July 21, 1950, Woods died after accidentally electrocuting himself while attempting to repair an engineer lighting set. He is buried in Toronto Township Cemetery, Toronto, Kansas.

Reasons Why A Male President Is Better Than A Female President

Reasons Why A Male President Is Better Than A Female President A president is a leader and women are not good in leadership. They Don't support to lead. God does not make them to lead. If you examine the bible you will observed that God does not choose women as a leader. From the days of moses to the day of Jesus christ God Didn't choose woman to act. This means that God the creator doesn't support the idea of woman to be a leader. He create them to be a helper they do not have the potential of a leader. Making them as a leader or ptesident i think is a bias and is Even against God will Although God made some woman a prophetess. I find this From the amazing story of Deborah in Judges 4 to the stories of Ruth, Esther, Tamar, Rahab, Huldah. What you should know is that a prophetess is not a leader. The fact that God use them does not mean they are leaders. They are just made to say what God intend to do. Do not mistake them to be leaders This is not a discrimination...

A Very Victorian Two-Penny Hangover

During the Great Depreciation in London, people who couldn’t afford to sleep in a bad could pay twopence for a spot on a bench with a clothesline tied in front of them, so they could sleep while hanging over a rope . The term ‘hangover’ is universally understood to mean the disproportionate suffering that comes after a night of over-indulgence. But where does the term actually come from? One possible explanation is, somewhat strangely, Victorian England. During the Victorian era the practice of paying for a ‘two-penny hangover’ was incredibly popular among the country’s homeless population and the term ‘two penny hangover’ was so commonly used that it made its way into contemporary literature. A two-penny hangover is not the description of a very cheap night out, nor is it the amount it would cost you to get drunk in Victorian England. It is actually somewhere you could go to sleep if you were one of the thousands of homeless and destitute living in the country’s main cities at the tim...

From Chantal Uren. This is my story

From Chantal Uren. This is my story... My name is Chantal, I'm a 37 year old Police Officer from Western Australia and I had a severe reaction after receiving the Pfizer vaccine. To the people who threatened me with defamation charges and disciplinary action for telling my story, I am disappointed. I'm disappointed that your priority is to silence me for your own ego and agenda rather than ask if I'm ok and offer me any help! At no time have you asked if I'm ok or cared for a second about my health or welfare. You decided that putting me under more stress, when that stress can cause further risk to my life is your priority. It makes me question humanity and how any person can have such a lack of empathy towards another.  If defamation and disciplinary action is what you deem suitable than I'm not afraid. I've done nothing wrong, I did what you wanted and look what happened. No one has the right to take away anyone else's experiences or tell them how they sho...

Trenchy Rats: Worst Enemy in World War 1

Trenchy Rats: Worst Enemy in World War 1 Many soldiers from World War I shared that their worst enemy in war were not the soldiers they fought against, but rather the weather, the mud, the cold and, perhaps more than anything, the rats. Rats in their millions infested the trenches where soldiers slept and lived. These rodents, sometimes huge, tried to eat the soldiers' foods, crawled over them and bit as they slept, carried diseases and nibbled on the dead comrades' corpses, sometimes disfiguring them completely by eating their faces and eyes. For these reasons, soldiers developed a passionate hatred for rats, which they tried to hunt for various methods, such as ambushing them with shotgun fire or stabbing them with their bayonets, in which a piece of cheese or bread would be attached to attract rats. Trench rats were rodents that were found around the frontline trenches of World War I. Due to massive amounts of debris, corpses, and a putrid environment, rats at the trenches b...

In the rural areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), corpses are being transported to or from the morgue on motorcycles The bikers must move to a distance of nearly 400 km, with a corpse on the back. Some poor families are forced to adopt this technique because they do not have money to rent a hearse. The lifeless body is wrapped in a blanket, supported on both sides by tree branches attached to a motorcycle. The photos that became viral on social networks, were shared by a PK Kasrim. The latter revealed that motorcyclists use this means of transport as a source of extra profit. AP Photo An American Seaman looks at the charred corpse of a Japanese Pilot brought up from the bottom of Pearl Harbor, where he crashed with is burning plane during the attack in 1941. On December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on the United States, bombing warships and military targets in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. More than 350 Japanese aircraft attacked the naval base in two waves, strafing targets, dropping armor-piercing bombs, and launching torpedoes toward U.S. battleships and cruisers. The U.S. forces were unprepared, waking to the sounds of explosions and scrambling to defend themselves. The entire preemptive attack lasted only 90 minutes, and in that time, the Japanese sunk four battleships and two des...

This South Carolina Lawyer Tried To Arrange His Own Murder So His Son Could Collect His $10 Million Life Insurance

This South Carolina Lawyer Tried To Arrange His Own Murder So His Son Could Collect His $10 Million Life Insurance In June 2021, the wife and youngest son of Alex Murdaugh were murdered at their rural estate, sending him into a spiral that ended with him hiring a hitman to kill him. With a wife and two sons, South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh appeared to have it all. That is, until June when his spouse and son were killed in an unsolved murder case. The pain of losing them caused him to fall into a deep depression exacerbated by his long-standing opioid addiction. By the end of August, Alex Murdaugh had arranged to have himself murdered so that his surviving son could collect the $10 million life insurance, which Murdaugh falsely believed wouldn’t be paid out if he died by suicide. It was the culmination of years of scandals and accidents that plagued this prominent South Carolina legal dynasty, whose roots in the area go back 111 years. According to CNN, the 53-year-old attorney was ...
