How “Lobster Boy” Grady Stiles Went From Circus Act To Murderer

For more than a century, a peculiar physical condition known as ectrodactyly has afflicted the Stiles family. The rare congenital deformity makes hands look like lobster claws as the middle fingers are either missing or seemingly fused to the thumb and pinky.

For more than a century, a peculiar physical condition known as ectrodactyly has afflicted the Stiles family. The rare congenital deformity makes hands look like lobster claws as the middle fingers are either missing or seemingly fused to the thumb and pinky.

While many may have viewed this condition as a handicap, for the Stiles family it spelled opportunity. As far back as the 1800s, as the family grew and produced more children with unusual hands and feet, they developed a circus: The Lobster Family, which became a carnival staple throughout the early 20th century.

But one son, Grady Stiles Jr., would give the Stiles family a different, morbid reputation when he became a serial abuser and murderer.

Grady Stiles Jr. Becomes Lobster Boy
Grady Stiles Jr., who would become known as Lobster Boy, was born in Pittsburgh in 1937. At that point, his father was already part of the “freak show” circuit, adding his kids with ectrodactyly to the act.

Grady Stiles Jr.’s case was pretty severe: in addition to his hands, he also had it in his feet and therefore could not walk.

For most of his life, he primarily used a wheelchair — but also learned to use his upper body to pull himself across the floor with impressive strength. As Grady grew up, he became alarmingly strong, something that would benefit his homicidal rage later in life.

Throughout his childhood, Stiles and his family toured with the carnival circuit, spending the offseason in Gibsonton, Florida as many “carnies” did. The family did well: they made anywhere between $50,000 to $80,000 per season, and unlike a lot of freak show acts, didn’t have to subject themselves to anything more than curious stares.

Stiles grew up in this carnival world, and so it wasn’t surprising that as a young man he fell in love with another carnival worker, a young woman named Maria (some sources say Mary) Teresa who had run away to join the circus as a teenager.

She wasn’t part of an act, just a staff member, but she fell in love with Stiles and the two married. Together they had two children and, like his father before him, introduced the children with ectrodactyly to the family business.

Darkness Emerges In Grady Stiles’s Life

As the children grew up — particularly Stiles’ daughter Cathy, who did not have ectrodactyly and was therefore somewhat the apple of her father’s eye — the Stiles’ family legacy began to take a rather dark turn.

Stiles drank, and combined with his overpowering upper body strength, he became abusive toward his wife and children. At one point, he allegedly used his claw-like hand to rip his wife’s IUD from within her body during a fight and would use his hands to choke her — something they were seemingly designed to do well.

The worst was yet to come, however. When Grady Stiles’ teenage daughter, Donna, fell in love with a young man that he didn’t approve of, Lobster Boy demonstrated his fatal strength.

No one’s exactly sure what happened: Either Stiles went to see his daughter’s fiance at his home or invited the young man over under the guise of giving his blessing for the wedding planned for the next day.

However it began, on the eve of the wedding, Stiles picked up his shotgun and murdered his daughter’s fiance in cold blood.

He soon went to trial, having admitted to his actions with no remorse whatsoever, but pointed out that he couldn’t possibly be imprisoned: no jail could handle his disability and to confine him to prison would be cruel and unusual punishment. He also, by this time, had acquired liver cirrhosis from drinking and had emphysema from years of cigarette smoking.

The court realized they really had no counterargument, as it was true that the prisons were not well-equipped to deal with many disabilities, certainly not Stiles’ incredibly rare one. So they let him off with 15 years probation and he returned home.

Lobster Boy had, by this time, divorced his first wife, remarried another woman, and had two more children. He proceeded to subject them to his drunken rampages, and eventually, his second wife divorced him.

For reasons that no one — either in the Stiles family or outside of it — has been able to understand, his first wife agreed to remarry him in 1989.

The Murder Of Lobster Boy

But Maria Teresa and her now-grown children were not without their limits.

Grady Stiles had evaded prison and gained a sense of being above the law, and thus the beatings became more severe. His wife had finally reached her breaking point.

A few years after she remarried Stiles, she paid her 17-year-old neighbor, Chris Wyant, $1,500 to kill him. Maria Teresa’s son from another marriage, Glenn, helped her conceive the idea and carry out the plan. One night, Wyant took a .32 Colt Automatic he had a friend purchase for him into Stiles’ trailer and shot him dead at point-blank range.

Not one of them denied that they had intended to kill Grady Stiles. During the trial, his wife spoke at length of his abusive history. “My husband was going to kill my family,” she told the court, “I believe that from the bottom of my heart.”

At least one of their children, Cathy, testified against him as well.

The jury convicted Wyant of second-degree murder and sentenced him to 27 years in prison. They charged his wife and her son Glenn with first-degree murder. She received a sentence of 12 years in prison.

She unsuccessfully appealed her conviction and began to serve her sentence in February of 1997. She had tried to get Glenn to take a plea bargain but he refused. The court sentenced him to life in prison.

Just as a significant portion of his living family was being tried for his murder, Grady Stiles’s body was put to rest. Or unrest, as it were: Lobster Boy was so disliked, not just in his family but within the community, that the funeral home could not find anyone willing to be pallbearers.

Everest climber returns to mountain to bury woman he was forced to abandon 9 years ago

Everest climber returns to mountain to bury woman he was forced to abandon 9 years ago In 2007, Ian Woodall, a British climber, returned to Everest to bury the bodies of three climbers he passed on his way to the summit. One of the climbers, a woman named Francys Arsentiev, was still alive when Woodall reached her during his initial ascent. Her first words to him were"don't leave me behind." The grim reality, though, is that Woodall could not have done anything for her without jeopardizing his own life or the lives of his team members. He was forced to leave her to perish alone. Climbing Mount Everest has become much safer over the past decade thanks to advances in technology and climbing gear. Satellite phones allow a climber to stay in contact with base camp to get constant updates on weather systems in the area. A better understanding of exactly what kind and how much gear to take has also caused the death toll to drop dramatically. She was alone on a mountain shelf wh...

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying Flaying — better known as “skinning alive” — has a long and grotesque history. Records of the practice exist as far back as the Neo-Assyrian Empire (beginning in 911 B.C.), but it has cropped up in most civilizations at one time or another, including Medieval Europe (where it tended to be used as a punishment for traitors) and in the ritual human sacrifices made by the Aztecs in Mexico (the Aztecs, at least, are believed to have skinned the body after the sacrifice had been made). Various techniques have been utilized in the many different cultures in which flaying has been employed, but the basis remains the same: Slowly, excruciatingly slicing the skin from the body while keeping the victim alive for as long as possible (and when feasible, removing the skin intact). Rendering Of Flaying Wikimedia Commons Carvings from the Assyrian period show the process beginning with incisions to the thighs or buttocks, while the European method — pictured...

Florida's Messiest Execution

Florida's Messiest Execution On July 8, 1999, the execution of Allen Lee Davis set off a shock wave that rippled around the world. During his time in the electric chair, Davis bled profusely from the nose and suffered burns to his head, leg, and groin area. As the switch was thrown, the “Tiny” Davis, who was executed for the May 11, 1982, murder of Nancy Weiler and her two daughters, reared back against the restraints, giving witnesses a chilling glimpse under a black hood designed to hide the faces of the condemned. Blood poured from his vivid purple nose, ran down the wide leather strap that covered his mouth and soaked the white shirt. After the power was turned off, Davis was still alive. Witnesses said his chest rose and fell about 10 times before he went still. After the execution, state prison officials and Governor Jeb Bush said the Old Sparky functioned properly. Three photos of the incident have been published on Florida’s High Court official website in an attempt to argu...

Death of Georgia Teen Found in Gym Mat Was 'Weird Accident,' Sheriff In 2013, the body of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson was found upside down in a standing, rolled-up gym mat in a Georgia high school. Police initially ruled his death an accident, but the teenager's parents suspected a cover-up. A second autopsy later showed blunt-force trauma — and a few missing organs. On October 31, 2013, the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia announced that his office would open a formal review into Johnson's death. On June 20,...

Archaeologists Just Stumbled Across An Unexploded Civil War Artillery Shell At Gettysburg

Archaeologists Just Stumbled Across An Unexploded Civil War Artillery Shell At Gettysburg Though the shell was destroyed, historians suspect that it was fired by Confederate forces on July 2, 1863. While sweeping the grounds of Gettysburg National Military Park as part of a rehabilitation project, an archaeologist detected something buried beneath the earth with his metal detector — and two feet down, he came across a 10-pound artillery shell from the Civil War. Realizing that it was likely live, he laid it down on the ground gently, snapped a photo, and "ran for the hills." Experts then visited the park to examine the 160-year-old ordnance, and after identifying it as a Burton round likely fired by Confederate troops from a Parrott cannon or 3-inch ordnance rifle during the Battle of Gettysburg, they swiftly destroyed it as a safety measure — read more at the link in our profile. While sweeping the grounds of Gettysburg National Military Park as part of a rehabilitation ...

A woman with syphilis is photographed before penicillin was invented, 1890s

A woman with syphilis is photographed before penicillin was invented, 1890s. In the Victorian era, rampant disease kept life expectancies low while high photography costs kept most people from ever having their picture taken. So when adults and especially young children died without ever sitting for a picture, their family would often dress and pose the corpse in a lifelike way before inviting a photographer over to have a portrait taken with the departed.  From postmortem photos to those taken of the living, see more of the most haunting portraits of the Victorian era —  .The first recorded outbreak of syphilis in Europe occurred in 1494/1495 in Naples, Italy, during a French invasion.Because it was spread by returning French troops, the disease was known as "French disease", and it was not until 1530 that the term "syphilis" was first applied by the Italian physician and poet Girolamo Fracastoro.  The causative organism, Treponema pallidum, was first identified by...
