Inside The Disturbing Legend Of The ‘Tsunami Spirits’ That Have Haunted Japan Ever Since Its 2011 Disaster

Survivors of Japan's harrowing 2011 earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 15,000 people claim to keep seeing the restless spirits of the victims known as "tsunami ghosts."

Ever since the Japanese tsunami of 2011 killed more than 15,000 people, those living in the affected areas have reported countless sightings of "tsunami spirits." Even when there's been no rain, cab drivers have been hailed by soaking wet passengers — believed to be ghosts of victims still drenched from the disaster.

One cab driver in Ishinomaki picked up a woman with soaking wet hair despite the sunny skies who asked to be taken to an area of the city now abandoned due to the tsunami. After a moment of silence, she asked "Have I died?" And when he turned back to look at her, there was no one there.

See the photos, watch a video and discover the haunting story of the tsunami ghosts now featured in Netflix's "Unsolved Mysteries" by clicking the link in our bio.

On March 11, 2011, a devastating magnitude 9.1 earthquake rocked eastern Asia’s seafloor, sending a wave of ocean water the height of a 12-story building into Japan’s coast. More than 15,000 people lost their lives, millions lost access to running water or electricity, and more than 120,000 buildings were destroyed within a matter of minutes.

The Tōhoku earthquake, named for the region of northeastern Japan from which it originated, was the most devastating in the nation’s recorded history.

But shortly after the disaster, traumatized survivors began to see the faces of victims in puddles, wandering the beaches, and appearing at their doors.

Disquieting figures drenched in water were also seen hailing cabs, only to disappear once they climbed into the back seat. And these weren’t one-off sightings — residents all across the hardest-hit cities were reporting such apparitions.

British reporter Richard Lloyd Parry explored the widespread phenomenon of these “tsunami spirits” in his nonfiction book, Ghosts of the Tsunami, and the bizarre circumstance was most recently chronicled in an episode of Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries. But explaining this eerie case has not been a simple task.

One must consider how Japanese culture, collective grief, and perhaps the truly uncanny, work together to create these tsunami spirits. One thing is clear, however, these tales are as hair-raising as they are dumbfounding.

It was 2:46 p.m. local time when the earthquake started. Centered 45 miles east of Tōhoku at a depth of 15 miles below the surface of the ocean, it shook the Earth for six full minutes, triggering 128-foot waves that crashed into Miyako city in northeastern Japan. Meanwhile, water traveled six miles inland in Sendai.

A total of 217 square miles were flooded, which included the destruction of hospitals, schools, businesses, homes, railways, and everything else. Perhaps most devastatingly, the tsunami also caused a cooling system failure at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, leading to an infamous meltdown.

Japan’s Reconstruction Agency estimated that the financial damage reached $199 billion. The World Bank, meanwhile, estimated the total economic cost to be $235 billion.

“In the 65 years after the end of World War II, this is the toughest and the most difficult crisis for Japan,” said then-Prime Minister Naoto Kan.

But as Japan forged ahead with its reconstruction, the disaster lingered in supernatural ways.

Tsunami Spirits Become A Commonplace Encounter

Richard Lloyd Parry had lived in Japan for 18 years by the time the natural disaster occurred, and he was surprised to learn that the nation was more superstitious than he thought. According to Parry, seeing a tsunami ghost in the months following the earthquake was not rare.

“People’s grief and loss and anguish came out,” he told NPR in 2014. “And what also came out after a few months were stories of ghosts and hauntings and supernatural events to the extent that it almost seemed like an epidemic.”

In 2016, a graduate student of sociology named Yuka Kudo traveled to one of the cities most ravaged by the disaster, Ishinomaki, in order to study this epidemic. She focused specifically on the town’s cab drivers, who claimed to have picked up passengers that turned out to be tsunami ghosts.

Ishinomaki suffered 3,097 deaths and reported 2,770 missing persons. A whopping 50,000 buildings had been destroyed there as well. The decimated city saw most of its population relocate, with aimless cab drivers hoping for the best on their shifts. Out of the 100 cabbies Kudo prodded for supernatural stories, seven volunteered.

The first cabbie told Kudo of an encounter he had in the summer of 2011. It had only been a few months since the tsunami, and there were barely any customers. He was naturally shocked to suddenly spot a young woman hailing him down in a particularly hard-hit area

Wearing a heavy winter coat in the middle of summer, the figure was also completely drenched. The driver barely had time to realize that it hadn’t rained in days before she climbed into the back seat and asked to be driven to the largely-abandoned Minamihama district.

“That area is almost empty,” he said while switching on the meter. “Are you sure?” There was a long silence. Then, in a shivering voice, the woman asked: “Have I died?”

The terrified driver turned around to face the customer, but found absolutely nothing nor anyone in his car.

Another cabbie told Kudo that he picked up a confused-looking man in his 20s who kept pointing forward when asked where he needed to go. Finally, he said simply, “Hiyoriyama,” a mountain park near the city. After careening up the mountain near Ishinomaki, the driver dropped his customer on a plateau at the summit. But when he turned around to be paid, there was nobody in his car.

Parry’s investigative book also documents how one man in Kurihara said that he now despises the rain, as he constantly sees the eyes of tsunami victims he knew in the puddles.

The ghost of an old woman is said to haunt a refugee home in Onagawa and to have regularly sat down for a cup of tea there. The cushion that would be left out for her was purportedly soaked in seawater every time her visits were over.

And in Tagajō, one fire station received incessant calls until the firefighters drove to the caller’s ruins to pray for the dead. Then, the calls stopped completely.

But there were more profound incidences with tsunami ghosts than these. Parry also spoke with Buddhist priest Reverend Taio Kaneda, who told him about a man named Takashi Ono who had become possessed. Kaneda and Ono both lived miles from the coastline, where the worst of the disaster had occurred. While Kaneda helped countless people properly bury their loved ones, Ono stayed away from the disaster zone until he finally went on his own to face it months later.

After seeing the monumental loss and devastation along the beaches, he returned home and had dinner with his family. Afterwards, he went into the backyard and started rolling in the mud, speaking in a guttural, aggressive way. His family was mortified. The next day, he had no recollection of what he had done.

While there are no clear-cut answers to these incidents, perhaps a closer look at the history of Japan’s relationship with the spirit realm can provide some insight into these tsunami ghosts.

Florida's Messiest Execution

Florida's Messiest Execution On July 8, 1999, the execution of Allen Lee Davis set off a shock wave that rippled around the world. During his time in the electric chair, Davis bled profusely from the nose and suffered burns to his head, leg, and groin area. As the switch was thrown, the “Tiny” Davis, who was executed for the May 11, 1982, murder of Nancy Weiler and her two daughters, reared back against the restraints, giving witnesses a chilling glimpse under a black hood designed to hide the faces of the condemned. Blood poured from his vivid purple nose, ran down the wide leather strap that covered his mouth and soaked the white shirt. After the power was turned off, Davis was still alive. Witnesses said his chest rose and fell about 10 times before he went still. After the execution, state prison officials and Governor Jeb Bush said the Old Sparky functioned properly. Three photos of the incident have been published on Florida’s High Court official website in an attempt to argu...

The Twisted Saga Of Michael Peterson, Kathleen Peterson, And The Real Story Behind ‘The Staircase’

The Twisted Saga Of Michael Peterson, Kathleen Peterson, And The Real Story Behind ‘The Staircase’ In 2003, Michael Peterson was convicted of killing his wife Kathleen by beating her with a fire poker and throwing her down their back staircase — despite the police never finding the murder weapon nor any evidence of a concrete motive. But investigators soon learned that the Petersons were deep in debt and that Michael was unhappy with the way his work as a writer had stalled while his wife's career as a business executive had soared. And when prosecutors learned that Michael had exchanged emails with a male sex worker, they argued that Kathleen must have discovered the messages and confronted him about it, causing him to fly into a fit of rage, beat her about the back of the head, and leave her to die at the bottom of the stairs. But six years after Michael's conviction, a shocking new analysis showed that Kathleen Peterson had traces of feathers, wood, and cedar needle...

KIM KARDASHIAN BEFORE & AFTER PLASTIC SURGERY (PHOTOS)

KIM KARDASHIAN BEFORE & AFTER PLASTIC SURGERY (PHOTOS) Kim Kardashian has always been rumored to have had work done on her face and body, something she has always denied, but then again she denied having a s*x tape years ago, and we all know how that turned out.  The photos below show some very noticeable differences in her face compared to what she looked like in 2006, or even what she looked like just a year ago. The 32 year-old E! star, who is pregnant with boyfriend Kanye West's baby, reportedly a girl, looks to have had some cheek implants, face injections, a nose job, and perhaps some botox or facelift. No telling on what she has done to the rest of her body. Born on October 21, 1980, Kim, on the surface at least, seems like one of those celebrities who is famous just for the media frenzy surrounding her mother, her stepfather and of course her sisters. Kim Kardashian along with her sisters Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian are the daughters of the late Robert Kardashian. Her...

Snowboarder's disappearance shrouds Mount Everest

Snowboarder's disappearance shrouds Mount Everest This is the last photo ever taken of Marco Siffredi — just before he died attempting to snowboard down Mount Everest.  On September 8, 2002, the French daredevil reached the 29,000-foot summit of Earth's highest point. Though critically exhausted from the climb and the high altitude, Siffredi stood with his board perched over the precipice and decided to forge ahead with his plan. He strapped on a fresh oxygen tank, bid his Sherpa adieu, and began his descent — never to be seen again.  Marco Siffredi (22 May 1979 – 8 September 2002) was a French snowboarder and mountaineer who hailed from a climbing family; his father was a mountain guide, and his older brother Pierre had died in an avalanche in their hometown of Chamonix, France.[1] Siffredi was the first to descend Mount Everest on a snowboard, completing this feat in 2001 via the Norton Couloir.[2][3] In 2002, he disappeared after making his second Everest summit, while atte...

In the heart of Ethiopia is situated one of its holiest towns, known as Lalibela

In the heart of Ethiopia is situated one of its holiest towns, known as Lalibela, where a group of eleven monolithic rock-hewn churches stand. They are the biggest monolithic temples in the world, and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, yet much mystery still surrounds their construction. The age of these buildings is unknown, but legends mention that they were excavated during the reign of Gebre Mesqel Lalibela , who ruled Ethiopia at the beginning of the 13th century AD. Legends also claim that the churches were built in 24 years. Even today, accomplishing this work using carbon steel tipped chisels and diamond blades would be remarkable. There are also many other peculiarities about its construction, such as the fact that the massive amount of stone and earth that would have had to be removed from around the churches and from their hollowed out interiors, was nowhere to be found. The gruesome story of Robert Pickton, the "Pig Farmer Killer":

the gruesome story of Robert Pickton, the "Pig Farmer Killer": In February 2002, Canadian police raided the property of pig farmer Robert Pickton in search of illegal firearms — and stumbled upon something more horrifying than they could have ever imagined. Scattered across the property were the remains of at least 33 people, most of them sex workers or Indigenous women, and many of them were found inside his pigpens. Investigators soon learned that not only had Pickton murdered dozens of women, but that he'd taken their bodies to a meat rendering plant or ground them up himself and fed them to the pigs. Soon, officials issued an alert that the meat products Pickton sold to the public may have contained the ground-up remains of his human victims.
