New research finds that viking brought their favourite Animals to Bristain over 1000 years ago
From as early as the 9th century, Vikings made the journey across the North Sea to conduct raids on England. For years, it was believed that many of these raids were conducted with the help of horses the Vikings stole from locals. But a recent analysis of horse and dog bone fragments found at a Viking burial site points to a different reality.
The animal remains date back to 873 — about 200 years before the Battle of Hastings depicted in the famous Bayeux Tapestry, which showed Vikings disembarking from horses. And after an isotopic analysis, scientists found that they belonged to animals that had lived most of their lives in Scandinavia rather than Britain. The animals had also been buried alongside humans, suggesting they'd been transported from Scandinavia in the same fleet as their owners and may have been sacrificed after their owner's death to be buried with them.
