Spy, Murder Victim, Or Something Else? Inside The Decades-Long Mystery Of The Isdal Woman

Who was the Isdal Woman? The story Behind the mysterious corpse found burned to death in Norway's Ice Valley in 1970

On November 29, 1970, two young girls and their father were hiking through the remote Isdalen Valley outside of Bergen, Norway, when they suddenly came upon a horrific sight. There on the rocky foothills in front of them was a woman's body lying on its back — and burned beyond recognition.

The family rushed to report the corpse to the police, who quickly sent a team to investigate.
Baffled and horrified, detectives had no idea whether this mystery woman had fallen into a fire, died by suicide, been murdered, or something else. Investigators then uncovered a strange trail of coded messages, disguises, and fake identities as well as possible connections to espionage and secret military weapons. However, even with DNA in hand, the authorities have remained unable to identify the woman or determine why she was killed for the last 50 years.

This is the chilling story of the Isdal Woman - read more at the link in our bio.

More than 50 years after the Isdal Woman's charred body was found in Norway’s “Ice Valley,” the authorities still don’t know who she was or how she died.

On Nov. 29, 1970 two young girls and their father were hiking through the Isdalen Valley, a few miles outside the city of Bergen, Norway, when they came upon a horrific sight: a woman’s body lying on its back, burned beyond recognition.

The man and his daughters returned to Bergen and reported the body. But unfortunately, this was just the beginning of what would become a decades-long mystery with more questions than answers.

In fact, the more investigators looked into the case, the stranger it became. The woman had left behind a strange trail of coded messages, disguises, and fake identities. Even with DNA testing, police failed to identify the woman.

The case of the Isdal Woman was reopened in 2016, but so far, over 50 years after her body was found, her identity remains a mystery.

Here’s everything we know about the Isdal Woman.

The Horrific Scene In Ice Valley
When police were told of the dead, burned body in the woods, a small party ventured out to retrieve it. Among them was police lawyer Carl Halvor Aas. As of 2016, when the NRK reopened the investigation, he was the last living person from the party.

“The first thing we notice is the stench,” Aas said. “I remember we were walking, and sometimes climbing, up the scree slope. As we hurry along, I’m wondering where we are heading for, because it all seems so steep and impassable. This is no hiking trail, that’s for sure.”

When they reached the body, they began tossing around theories. Some officers wondered whether the woman had fallen into a fire and launched herself backward in a panic. Others wondered if there was a murderer lurking somewhere in the forest.

“It is not a pretty sight,” Aas said. “The question is whether someone set fire to her, or if there are other causes.”

The corpse was sprawled out in a “boxer’s” or “fencer’s position,” with its arms outstretched in front of the upper body — a common position for bodies that had been burnt alive. Nearby, police found the charred remains of the woman’s belongings: bits of clothing, an umbrella, two melted plastic bottles, a half bottle of Kloster Liqueur, a plastic cover for a passport, and more.

But these items offered little insight into who the woman was. In fact, it seemed as if every trace of identification had been deliberately wiped clean. There were no markings on any of her belongings. Manufacturing labels had been cut off the burnt clothing, and even the labels on the bottles had been removed.

Speaking with the BBC, forensic investigator Tormod Bønes noted another odd thing about the woman’s belongings. She had a watch and jewelry, but she wasn’t wearing any of these items. Instead, they were placed beside her.

“The placement and location of the objects surrounding the body was strange,” Bønes said. “It looked like there had been some kind of ceremony.”

L'Oreal
Eyewitness reports also did little to help identify the woman. From what police could gather, the woman was around five-foot-four, aged between 25 and 40, with “long brownish-back hair,” a small round face, brown eyes, and small ears. At the time of her death, she wore her hair “in a ponytail tied with a blue and white print ribbon.”

Just who was this woman? What happened to her? And why, despite not having the answers to these questions, did the police close the case after only a few weeks?

Two Suitcases Found Nearby Deepen The Mystery

A few days after the Isdal Woman’s body was found, police made another bizarre discovery: two suitcases left at the Bergen railway station’s luggage department. Inside one, they found prescription-free glasses — and a fingerprint on the lens that matched the Isdal Woman’s.

Finally, it seemed, they were one step closer to learning the woman’s identity.
Alongside the glasses, police found a variety of other items including clothing, wigs, a comb, a hairbrush, cosmetics, eczema cream, teaspoons, and currency from Germany, Norway, Belgium, England, and Sweden.

But once again, Bønes said, “all the labels that could have identified the woman, her clothes, or belongings, had been removed.”

The woman’s name was scratched off of the eczema cream tube, and no major department stores could find a match for any of her clothing. To complicate matters further, police found what appeared to be a coded note among the woman’s belongings, which they cracked later, believing the codes may indicate which hotels she stayed at, and when.

The only useful piece of evidence they found in the suitcases was a plastic bag from Oscar Rørtvedt’s Footwear Store in Stavanger. The owner’s son, Rolf Rørtvedt, recalled that he had sold a pair of boots to “a very well dressed, nice-looking woman with dark hair” who “took a long time” choosing her boots.

The boots in question, police believed, matched those found at the scene of the Isdal Woman’s death. Using this as a base point, they were able to trace her to a nearby hotel, but found she had checked in under a false name: Fenella Lorch.

In fact, she had stayed at a few different Norwegian hotels leading up to her death, but in each case she used a different alias. Sometimes, she was Genevieve Lancier. Other times, she was Claudia Tielt or Claudia Nielsen. She also used the names Alexia Zarne-Merchez, Vera Jarle, and Elisabeth Leenhouwfr.

A waitress from one of the hotels at which the woman stayed, Alvhild Rangnes, remembered the woman. She told the BBC, “My first impression of her was one of elegance and self-assuredness… In fact, I remember her winking at me… from my perspective it felt as though she thought I had been staring a bit too much at her.”

“On one occasion,” she added, “while I was serving her, she was in the dining hall, sitting right next to — but not interacting with — two German navy personnel, one of which was an officer.”

All of these strange clues, paired with the fact that her death happened in the midst of the Cold War, contributed to theories that the Isdal Woman may have been a spy. What’s more, some clues suggested her movements lined up with trials of the Norwegian Penguin missile in the 1960s.

Still, despite all of this, police were no closer to finding out who the woman was.

Florida's Messiest Execution

Florida's Messiest Execution On July 8, 1999, the execution of Allen Lee Davis set off a shock wave that rippled around the world. During his time in the electric chair, Davis bled profusely from the nose and suffered burns to his head, leg, and groin area. As the switch was thrown, the “Tiny” Davis, who was executed for the May 11, 1982, murder of Nancy Weiler and her two daughters, reared back against the restraints, giving witnesses a chilling glimpse under a black hood designed to hide the faces of the condemned. Blood poured from his vivid purple nose, ran down the wide leather strap that covered his mouth and soaked the white shirt. After the power was turned off, Davis was still alive. Witnesses said his chest rose and fell about 10 times before he went still. After the execution, state prison officials and Governor Jeb Bush said the Old Sparky functioned properly. Three photos of the incident have been published on Florida’s High Court official website in an attempt to argu...

The Twisted Saga Of Michael Peterson, Kathleen Peterson, And The Real Story Behind ‘The Staircase’

The Twisted Saga Of Michael Peterson, Kathleen Peterson, And The Real Story Behind ‘The Staircase’ In 2003, Michael Peterson was convicted of killing his wife Kathleen by beating her with a fire poker and throwing her down their back staircase — despite the police never finding the murder weapon nor any evidence of a concrete motive. But investigators soon learned that the Petersons were deep in debt and that Michael was unhappy with the way his work as a writer had stalled while his wife's career as a business executive had soared. And when prosecutors learned that Michael had exchanged emails with a male sex worker, they argued that Kathleen must have discovered the messages and confronted him about it, causing him to fly into a fit of rage, beat her about the back of the head, and leave her to die at the bottom of the stairs. But six years after Michael's conviction, a shocking new analysis showed that Kathleen Peterson had traces of feathers, wood, and cedar needle...

KIM KARDASHIAN BEFORE & AFTER PLASTIC SURGERY (PHOTOS)

KIM KARDASHIAN BEFORE & AFTER PLASTIC SURGERY (PHOTOS) Kim Kardashian has always been rumored to have had work done on her face and body, something she has always denied, but then again she denied having a s*x tape years ago, and we all know how that turned out.  The photos below show some very noticeable differences in her face compared to what she looked like in 2006, or even what she looked like just a year ago. The 32 year-old E! star, who is pregnant with boyfriend Kanye West's baby, reportedly a girl, looks to have had some cheek implants, face injections, a nose job, and perhaps some botox or facelift. No telling on what she has done to the rest of her body. Born on October 21, 1980, Kim, on the surface at least, seems like one of those celebrities who is famous just for the media frenzy surrounding her mother, her stepfather and of course her sisters. Kim Kardashian along with her sisters Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian are the daughters of the late Robert Kardashian. Her...

Snowboarder's disappearance shrouds Mount Everest

Snowboarder's disappearance shrouds Mount Everest This is the last photo ever taken of Marco Siffredi — just before he died attempting to snowboard down Mount Everest.  On September 8, 2002, the French daredevil reached the 29,000-foot summit of Earth's highest point. Though critically exhausted from the climb and the high altitude, Siffredi stood with his board perched over the precipice and decided to forge ahead with his plan. He strapped on a fresh oxygen tank, bid his Sherpa adieu, and began his descent — never to be seen again.  Marco Siffredi (22 May 1979 – 8 September 2002) was a French snowboarder and mountaineer who hailed from a climbing family; his father was a mountain guide, and his older brother Pierre had died in an avalanche in their hometown of Chamonix, France.[1] Siffredi was the first to descend Mount Everest on a snowboard, completing this feat in 2001 via the Norton Couloir.[2][3] In 2002, he disappeared after making his second Everest summit, while atte...

In the heart of Ethiopia is situated one of its holiest towns, known as Lalibela

In the heart of Ethiopia is situated one of its holiest towns, known as Lalibela, where a group of eleven monolithic rock-hewn churches stand. They are the biggest monolithic temples in the world, and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, yet much mystery still surrounds their construction. The age of these buildings is unknown, but legends mention that they were excavated during the reign of Gebre Mesqel Lalibela , who ruled Ethiopia at the beginning of the 13th century AD. Legends also claim that the churches were built in 24 years. Even today, accomplishing this work using carbon steel tipped chisels and diamond blades would be remarkable. There are also many other peculiarities about its construction, such as the fact that the massive amount of stone and earth that would have had to be removed from around the churches and from their hollowed out interiors, was nowhere to be found. The gruesome story of Robert Pickton, the "Pig Farmer Killer":

the gruesome story of Robert Pickton, the "Pig Farmer Killer": In February 2002, Canadian police raided the property of pig farmer Robert Pickton in search of illegal firearms — and stumbled upon something more horrifying than they could have ever imagined. Scattered across the property were the remains of at least 33 people, most of them sex workers or Indigenous women, and many of them were found inside his pigpens. Investigators soon learned that not only had Pickton murdered dozens of women, but that he'd taken their bodies to a meat rendering plant or ground them up himself and fed them to the pigs. Soon, officials issued an alert that the meat products Pickton sold to the public may have contained the ground-up remains of his human victims.
