The Macabre True Story Of Edward Paisnel, The Beast Of Jersey

The Macabre True Story Of Edward Paisnel, The Beast Of Jersey

Throughout the 1960s, Edward Paisnel appeared to be a pillar of his small community on the English Channel Island of Jersey.

He was a family man who was devoted to his wife Joan and her young children, and he even played Santa Claus at Christmastime for the young foster children at the group home that Joan founded. But when he wasn't spending time with his family or doing good deeds, he was donning this mask and sneaking into his neighbors' homes at night in order to sexually assault women and children.

It would take more than a decade for police to finally catch up with the “Beast of Jersey" as they repeatedly focused on other suspects, blind to the fact that a man like Paisnel could commit such crimes. Officers only caught him when he ran a red light one day in 1971 and they happened to see his mask sitting right there in his car.

Edward Paisnel committed more than a dozen rapes and assaults in the Channel Islands between 1957 and 1971, cementing his place in the annals of true crime as the “Beast of Jersey.”

For over a decade, residents of the remote Channel Island of Jersey feared finding a masked intruder in their homes. There were no alarm systems at the time and hardly any policemen at hand. Home telephones were easily destroyed by a cut of the cord. It was as such, that over a dozen women and children met a faceless shape that came to be known as the “Beast of Jersey.”

With a mask that resembled molten skin, the emotionless shape stalked, raped, and sodomized more than 13 people between 1957 and 1971. Perhaps most disturbing was what police discovered beneath the mask: a normal-seeming family man.

Edward Paisnel was 46 years old. He had no violent history and lived with his wife Joan and her children. He had even dressed as Santa Claus for foster home orphans at Christmas. After 14 years of assaults and a taunting letter to police, he was finally caught by mere chance — leaving evidence of Satanism in his wake.

Meet Edward Paisnel, The ‘Beast Of Jersey’

Edward Paisnel was born in 1925. While the exact date and location of his birth are unclear, the Brit came from a family of means. He was barely a teenager when the United Kingdom declared war on Germany in 1939 and was at one point briefly imprisoned for stealing food to give to starving families.

Paisnel’s crimes began in early 1957, long before he garnered his infamous moniker or donned the Beast of Jersey mask. With a scarf over his face, the 32-year-old approached a young woman waiting for a bus in the Monte a L’abbe district and tied a rope around her neck. He forced her to a nearby field, raped her, and fled.

Targeting bus stops and using isolated fields became his modus operandi. Paisnel assaulted a 20-year-old woman in the same manner in March. He repeated this in July, then again in October 1959. All of his victims described their attacker as having a “musty” stench. Within a year, that smell wafted into homes.

It was Valentine’s Day 1960 when a 12-year-old boy awoke to find a man in his bedroom. The intruder used a rope to force him outside and into a nearby field to sodomize him. In March, a woman at a bus stop asked a man parked nearby if he could give her a ride. It was Paisnel — who drove her to a field and raped her.

He targeted a 43-year-old woman’s remote cottage next. She was awoken by alarming noise at 1:30 a.m. and tried calling the police, but Paisnel had cut the phone lines. Though he violently confronted her, she was able to escape and find help. She returned to find him gone, and her 14-year-old daughter left behind raped.

The Beast Of Jersey Continues His Rampage

Paisnel began exclusively targeting children at this point, invading a 14-year-old’s bedroom in April. She awoke to find him watching her from the shadows, but screamed so loud that he fled. An 8-year-old boy in July, meanwhile, was taken from his room and raped in a field only for Paisnel himself to walk the boy back home.

It took long enough, but police began questioning all residents with criminal records. With 13 of them including Paisnel refusing to provide fingerprints, the suspect list had narrowed. Police believed a fisherman named Alphonse Le Gastelois was their man, although the only evidence they had was that he was a known eccentric.

With Le Gastelois’s image plastered across the newspapers, vigilantes soon burned down his house. Le Gastelois left the island for good, with the Beast of Jersey’s attacks resuming thereafter — and three more children being raped and sodomized by the mask-wearing psychopath by April 1961.

And meanwhile, Paisnel was volunteering at community homes — with children in his care. He and his wife even took some of the children in, with Paisnel accused of abusing both the staff and orphans he was asked to assist. While none of it was ever reported, Scotland Yard finally began to help local police with a profile of their suspect.

The rapist was estimated to be between 40 and 45 years old, five feet and six inches tall, wearomg either a mask or scarf. He smelled terrible and attacked between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. He invaded homes through bedroom windows and used a flashlight. Curiously, the Beast of Jersey soon vanished — only to return in 1963.

Edward Paisnel Gets Caught

After two years of radio silence, the Beast of Jersey resurfaced. Between April and November 1963 he raped and sodomized four girls and boys he had snatched from their bedrooms. While he yet again disappeared for another two years, a letter appeared at the Jersey police station in 1966, taunting police

It chastised investigators for being incompetent while proudly proclaiming that the author had committed the perfect crime. It also stated that this wasn’t satisfying enough and that two more people would be victimized. That August, a 15-year-old girl was snatched from her home, raped, and covered in scratches.

The same exact thing happened to a 14-year-old boy in August 1970 — and the boy told police the attacker wore a mask. Fortunately, the Beast of Jersey mask would never be donned again, as 46-year-old Paisnel was pulled over for running a red light in a stolen car in the St. Helier district on July 10, 1971.

Police found a black wig, cords, tape, and an ominous mask inside. Paisnel wore a raincoat with nails fitted on the cuffs and shoulders, and had a flashlight on his person. He claimed he was on his way to an orgy — but he was taken into custody instead.

A search of his home yielded a hidden room with photographs of local properties, a sword, and an altar covered with books on the occult and black magic. Paisnel’s trial began on November 29. It took a mere 38 minutes of deliberation for the jury to find him guilty.

Convicted of 13 counts of rape, sexual assault, and sodomy against six of his victims, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Disturbingly, Edward Paisnel was released for good behavior in 1991, but died of a heart attack three years later. To this day, evidence of his abuses at various children’s homes continues to surface.

Inside the Repulsive World of 'Hurtcore', the Worst Crimes Imaginable

Inside the Repulsive World of 'Hurtcore', the Worst Crimes Imaginable The 36th President of the United States, Lyndon Baines Johnson named his penis "Jumbo" and he often displayed Jumbo to fellow congressmen and reporters. He pulled it out so often that he pretty much reduced much of his presidency to a literal dick-measuring contest The 36th President of the United States was a big man. At 6-foot-4, he was physically imposing — he would also stand far too close to people, which only served to amplify his size. His personality was big, too, as he was known for cursing like a sailor, telling dirty jokes and openly talking about — and even sharing — his bodily functions with anyone close by. He was certainly big on accomplishment as well, having served as the Senate Majority Leader before becoming JFK’s Vice President and eventual successor. As a president, Johnson had a historically big record — both good and bad — with the most significant civil rights record since Ab...

Lorraine McGraw, a 26-year-old mother, was killed by Cottingham in 1970, prosecutors say. McGraw's granddaughter, Sonia Ruiz McGraw of Queens, said Cottingham had promised to detail her grandmother's death and how he knew her. But Rockland law enforcement officials say facts do not support his other claim. Goodarzi was found dead alongside another unidentified ...

Abraham Lincoln’s Top Hat: The Inside Story

Abraham Lincoln’s Top Hat: The Inside Story In August 1864 president Lincoln lost his hat when his horse was startled by a loud noise. The hat was received later with a "bullet hole through the crown." The loud noise was an assassination attempt by unknown sniper Abraham Lincoln was our tallest president. At 6-foot-4, he would stand out even today, and he certainly towered over the men and women of his era. The top hat he habitually wore in public made him taller still. You couldn’t miss him in a crowd. The 16th president wore the top hat in war and peace, on the stump and in Washington, on occasions formal and informal. He wore it the night he was assassinated. Likely a descendant of the 17th-century steeple, or sugarloaf, hat, which was in turn influenced by the headgear worn by soldiers, the top hat gained in popularity until, by the early 1800s, says Debbie Henderson in her book The Top Hat: An Illustrated History, “it had become the irrepressible symbol of prestige and a...

Meet Chester W. Nimitz, The Seasick Admiral Who Defeated The Japanese Navy In World War II "Tell Nimitz to get the hell out to Pearl and stay there till the war is won." When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Chester Nimitz was in Washington, D.C., serving as head of the Navy's Bureau of Navigation. But just 10 days later, President Roosevelt fired the former head of the Pacific Fleet for his failure to prevent the attack and promoted Nimitz, sending him to Hawaii in civilian clothes and carrying classified damage reports hidden in his wife's sewing bag to avoid the detection of potential spies. With most of the Pacific Fleet destroyed and no functional battleships, the Navy was vastly outgunned by Japan. But Nimitz quickly consolidated the remaining fleet including aircraft carriers and pivoted to fighting naval battles in the skies while awaiting the construction of new battleships. And within just six months, he'd won two decisive batt...

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying Flaying — better known as “skinning alive” — has a long and grotesque history. Records of the practice exist as far back as the Neo-Assyrian Empire (beginning in 911 B.C.), but it has cropped up in most civilizations at one time or another, including Medieval Europe (where it tended to be used as a punishment for traitors) and in the ritual human sacrifices made by the Aztecs in Mexico (the Aztecs, at least, are believed to have skinned the body after the sacrifice had been made). Various techniques have been utilized in the many different cultures in which flaying has been employed, but the basis remains the same: Slowly, excruciatingly slicing the skin from the body while keeping the victim alive for as long as possible (and when feasible, removing the skin intact). Rendering Of Flaying Wikimedia Commons Carvings from the Assyrian period show the process beginning with incisions to the thighs or buttocks, while the European method — pictured...

In 1990, an improperly installed window on British Airways Flight 5390 fell off during midflight causing rapid decompression in the cockpit

In 1990, an improperly installed window on British Airways Flight 5390 fell off during midflight causing rapid decompression in the cockpit. Flight attendant Nigel Ogden just happened to be entering the cockpit when he heard the loud bang and saw the pilot getting sucked out. In the reenactment image, you can see Ogden holding on to his legs, while the co-pilot is trying to rapidly descend in order to reach a safer altitude. Most of the crew thought the pilot was already dead, but Ogden continued to hold on. There was also the fear that if he did let go, the body might collide with the plane's engine, wing or stabilizer, creating more havoc. All he knew for sure was that the pilot was slipping further and further out the window and his head was repeatedly slamming against the fuselage. After 15 minutes of flying with a broken window, the plane landed safely at Southampton Airport. Ogden suffered frostbite on his face and damaged one of his eyes; he also dislocated his shoulder. The...
