The man who killed at least 138 kids is now scheduled to be released from prison in 2021

The man who killed at least 138 kids is now scheduled to be released from prison in 2021.

Inside a maximum security, geographically isolated Colombian prison, there is a man named Luis Garavit. He lives separately from the other prisoners, for his own protection and only takes food and drinks given to him by those he knows. His guards describe him as relaxed, positive, and respectful. He’s studying to be a politician, and upon his release he hopes to start a career in activism, helping abused children. After all, abused children are something Garavito is an expert on, having abused over 300 of them himself.

From 1992 to 1999, Luis Garavito preyed upon and brutalized as many as 400 children and teenagers across Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela — and he’ll be up for parole soon.
Inside an isolated maximum security prison in Colombia there is a man named Luis Garavito.

Living separately from the other prisoners for his own protection, Garavito only takes food and drinks given to him by those he knows. His guards describe him as relaxed, positive, and respectful. He’s studying to be a politician, and upon his release, he hopes to start a career in activism, helping abused children.

After all, abused children are something Garavito is an expert on — having abused over 300 of them himself.

From 1992 to 1999, Luis Garavito — known as “La Bestia,” or the Beast — raped, tortured, and murdered anywhere from 100 to 400 boys, all between the ages of six and 16. His official number of victims rests at 138, the number he confessed to in court.

Police believe the number is closer to 400, and continue to this day to attempt to prove it.

The Abusive Childhood Of Luis Garavito
Before becoming an abuser himself, Luis Garavito suffered a violent childhood. Born on January 25, 1957, in Génova, Quindío, Colombia, Garavito was the oldest of seven brothers, all of whom he claimed were physically and emotionally abused by their father.

At 16, Garavito left home and held a number of odd jobs throughout Colombia. He worked as a store clerk and, for a time, selling prayer cards and religious icons on the street. He reportedly developed an addiction to alcohol and was known for his temper. Police reports stated that he had once tried to kill himself and consequently spent five years in psychiatric care.

Meanwhile, a decades-long civil war raged in Colombia that had begun in the late 1960s and left thousands of citizens homeless, fending for themselves on the streets. Many of those left homeless were children, their parents either dead or long gone, ensuring that no one would notice if they went missing.

Luis Garavito would use this to his advantage in 1992 when he committed his first murder.

The Sadistic Murders Of The Beast
The geographic span of Garavito’s crimes was enormous. He preyed on potentially hundreds of boys in 54 Colombian towns, though largely in Pereira in the western state of Risaralda.

Careful about his crimes, Garavito specifically targeted the downtrodden, the homeless, and orphaned boys who roamed the streets looking for food or safety. Once he found one, he would approach and lure them away from the crowded city streets by promising them gifts or candy, money or employment.

And Garavito would dress the part when offering a job, impersonating a priest, a farmer, an elderly man, or a street vendor, looking for someone young to help around his house or business. He would rotate his disguises often, never appearing as the same person too often to avoid suspicion.

Once he’d lured the boy away, he would walk with him for a time, encouraging the boy to share with Garavito about his life to earn his trust. In reality, he was wearing the boys down, walking just long enough that they would tire, making them vulnerable and unwary.

Then, he’d attack.

Luis Garavito would corner the tired victims and bind their wrists together. Then he’d torture them beyond belief.

According to police reports, the Beast truly earned his nickname. The bodies of the victims that were recovered showed signs of prolonged torture, including bite marks and anal penetration. In multiple cases, the victim’s genitals were removed and placed in his mouth. Several of the bodies were decapitated.

But it wouldn’t be until five years after La Bestia murdered his first victim that police began to take notice of the missing children.

Catching The Colombian Serial Killer
In late 1997, a mass grave was accidentally discovered in Pereira, prompting police to launch an investigation. The scene of some 25 corpses was so macabre that police initially suspected a satanic cult was behind it.

Then, in February of 1998, the bodies of two naked children were found on a hillside in Pereira, lying next to each other. A few feet away, another corpse was found. All three had their hands bound and their throats slashed. The murder weapon was found nearby.

While searching the area around the three boys, police came across a note with an address handwritten on it. The address turned out to be Luis Garavito’s girlfriend, whom he had been dating for years. Though he wasn’t in the home at the time, his things were, and the girlfriend gave the police access to them.

In one of Garavito’s bags, police discovered pictures of young boys, detailed journal entries in which he described each of his crimes, and tally marks of his victims.

A search for Garavito continued for days, during which known residences of his were searched, as well as local areas where he was known to hang out to look for new victims. Unfortunately, none of the search efforts turned up any information on Garavitos whereabouts. That is, until April 22.

Roughly a week after the hunt for Garavito had begun, police in a neighboring town picked up a man on suspicion of rape. Earlier, a young man sitting in an alleyway had noticed a young boy being followed and eventually accosted by an older man. Thinking that the situation was dire enough to intervene, the man rescued the boy and alerted authorities.

The police arrested the man on suspicion of attempted rape and booked him. Unbeknownst to them, they had in their custody one of world’s deadliest killers.

Where Is ‘La Bestia’ Luis Garavito Today?

As soon as he was interrogated by Colombian national police, The Beast cracked under the pressure. He confessed to abusing 147 young boys and burying their bodies in unmarked graves. He even drew maps to the gravesites for police.

His stories were corroborated when police found a pair of eyeglasses at one of the crime scenes that matched Garavito’s highly specific description. In the end, he was convicted on 138 counts of murder, though his other confessions continue to be investigated.

The maximum penalty for murder in Colombia is roughly 13 years. Multiplied by the 138 counts he received, Luis Garavito’s sentence came out to 1,853 years and nine days. Colombian law states that people who have committed crimes against children are required to serve at least 60 years in prison.

However, because he helped the police find the victim’s bodies, Luis Garavito was given 22 years. In 2021, he made a very public plea for his release, saying he has been a model inmate and is living in fear of being killed by other inmates.

However, a judge denied the request because he had not paid a fine for his victims that roughly totaled $41,500. La Bestia remains behind bars and is currently up for parole in 2023.

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying Flaying — better known as “skinning alive” — has a long and grotesque history. Records of the practice exist as far back as the Neo-Assyrian Empire (beginning in 911 B.C.), but it has cropped up in most civilizations at one time or another, including Medieval Europe (where it tended to be used as a punishment for traitors) and in the ritual human sacrifices made by the Aztecs in Mexico (the Aztecs, at least, are believed to have skinned the body after the sacrifice had been made). Various techniques have been utilized in the many different cultures in which flaying has been employed, but the basis remains the same: Slowly, excruciatingly slicing the skin from the body while keeping the victim alive for as long as possible (and when feasible, removing the skin intact). Rendering Of Flaying Wikimedia Commons Carvings from the Assyrian period show the process beginning with incisions to the thighs or buttocks, while the European method — pictured...

A Very Victorian Two-Penny Hangover

During the Great Depreciation in London, people who couldn’t afford to sleep in a bad could pay twopence for a spot on a bench with a clothesline tied in front of them, so they could sleep while hanging over a rope . The term ‘hangover’ is universally understood to mean the disproportionate suffering that comes after a night of over-indulgence. But where does the term actually come from? One possible explanation is, somewhat strangely, Victorian England. During the Victorian era the practice of paying for a ‘two-penny hangover’ was incredibly popular among the country’s homeless population and the term ‘two penny hangover’ was so commonly used that it made its way into contemporary literature. A two-penny hangover is not the description of a very cheap night out, nor is it the amount it would cost you to get drunk in Victorian England. It is actually somewhere you could go to sleep if you were one of the thousands of homeless and destitute living in the country’s main cities at the tim...

Annie Lee Cooper, The Black Activist John Lewis Revered As ‘Absolutely Fearless’

Annie Lee Cooper, The Black Activist John Lewis Revered As ‘Absolutely Fearless’ From marching with Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma to socking a racist cop for trying to keep her from the polls, Annie Lee Cooper fought for the rights of Black Americans with ferocity. In January 1965, an Alabama woman named Annie Lee Cooper lined up at her county courthouse to vote. This was not her first attempt, as she had been turned away from the polls just two years earlier. And after failing the impossible literacy tests made to keep Black people from the ballot box, Cooper decided that this time would be different. When a notoriously racist cop named Jim Clark began to demand that she abandon her spot in line, Cooper did her best to ignore him. But when he poked her in the neck with his billy club, Cooper took action — and punched him square in the face. The stunt nearly cost her her life and she was almost charged with attempted murder, but today her scuffle is remembered as courageous. As n...

The Execution of George Plantagenet: Drowned in a Barrel of Malmsey Wine?

The Execution of George Plantagenet: Drowned in a Barrel of Malmsey Wine? Legend has it that George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence, traitorous brother of Edward IV (and Richard III) was executed by immersion in a barrel of wine per his request! What a way to go! On February 18, 1478, George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence, was executed. According to some legends he was drowned in a barrel of malmsey wine. However, some historians believe he made never have actually been officially executed since it was done in private. Could Edward IV have decided not to end his brother’s life and chose to let him rot in jail and then bury him? When the body of the son of York was found, his head was definitely connected to his body, making it clear that he never suffered a traitor’s death. Why George, Duke of Clarence was Executed George had been pushing his luck for some time. In 1469 he switched sides and joined Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, in the attempt to put Henry VI back on the throne. The ar...

She poisoned 21 people including her own mother, children and husbands. So why has no-one heard of Britain's FIRST serial killer, Mary Ann Cotton?

She poisoned 21 people including her own mother, children and husbands. So why has no-one heard of Britain's FIRST serial killer, Mary Ann Cotton? The motivating factor behind Mary Ann Cotton seemed to be money, but it was surely not the final motive of her evil deeds. Mary Ann Cotton was responsible for the deaths of three of her four husbands, and she is thought to have murdered 21 victims in all, which includes eleven of her 13 children as well as her own mother. The main instrument she used for her murders was arsenic poisoning, which caused great gastric pain and the speedy decline of life force in her victims. After a 20-year long spree of mysterious murders surrounding Cotton’s life, she was eventually arrested and put on trial in 1873. Mary Ann Cotton was convicted of the murder of three of her husbands and was sentenced to death by hanging. The execution was not a smooth one; Cotton’s trap door proved to be too short, and she writhed wildly at the end of her rope until she...
