Treasure hunter stuck in jail 5 years for refusing to tell location of his loot

Treasure hunter stuck in jail 5 years for refusing to tell location of his loot

Tommy Thompson found nearly $4 million in gold in 1988 — but he's been in jail for five years because he won't reveal where it is.

He found a sunken ship with 500 gold coins onboard. But where did they go? If he knows, he’s not saying.

In this Aug. 29, 1991, photo, Tommy Thompson, left, stands at the helm of the Arctic Explorer as Bob Evans, center, and Barry Schatz look on in Norfolk, Va. Thompson, a former deep-sea treasure hunter, is about to mark his fifth year in jail for refusing to disclose the whereabouts of 500 missing coins

The gold technically belongs to 161 investors that had paid him to find it, and when they didn't get their share, the investors took Thompson to court. Now, he's saying he forgot where he put the gold.

A former deep-sea treasure hunter is about to mark his fifth year in jail for refusing to disclose the whereabouts of 500 missing coins made from gold found in a historic shipwreck.

Research scientist Tommy Thompson isn’t incarcerated for breaking the law. Instead, he’s being held in contempt of court for an unusually long stretch — well past the normal maximum limit of an 18-month internment in cases of witnesses refusing to cooperate.

But nothing is usual about Thompson’s case, which dates to his discovery of the S.S. America, known as the Ship of Gold, in 1988. The gold rush-era ship sank in a hurricane off South Carolina in 1857 with thousands of pounds of gold aboard, contributing to an economic panic.

Despite an investors lawsuit and a federal court order, Thompson still won’t cooperate with authorities trying to find those coins, according to court records, federal prosecutors and the judge who found Thompson in contempt.

“He creates a patent for a submarine, but he can’t remember where he put the loot,” federal Judge Algenon Marbley said during a 2017 hearing.

Thompson’s legal troubles stem from the 161 investors who paid Thompson $12.7 million to find the ship, never saw any proceeds and finally sued.

Back in 2012, a different federal judge ordered Thompson to appear in court to disclose the coins’ whereabouts. Instead, Thompson fled to Florida where he lived with his longtime female companion at a hotel near Boca Raton. U.S. marshals tracked him down and arrested him in early 2015.

Thompson pleaded guilty for his failure to appeal and was sentenced to two years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Thompson’s criminal sentence has been delayed until the issue of the gold coins is resolved.

That April 2015 plea deal required Thompson to answer questions in closed-door sessions about the whereabouts of the coins, which the government says are worth $2 million to $4 million. Importantly, he must also “assist” interested parties in finding the coins under that deal.

Thompson refused several times, and on Dec. 15, 2015, Marbley found Thompson in contempt of court and ordered him to stay in jail — and pay a $1,000 daily fine — until he responds.

In late October of this year, Thompson appeared by video for his latest hearing.

“Mr. Thompson, are you ready to answer the seminal question in this case as to the whereabouts of the gold?” Marbley said.

“Your honor, I don’t know if we’ve gone over this road before or not, but I don’t know the whereabouts of the gold,” Thompson responded. “I feel like I don’t have the keys to my freedom.”

Thompson, 68, has said he suffers from a rare form of chronic fatigue syndrome that has created problems with short-term memory. He’s previously said, without providing details, that the coins were turned over to a trust in Belize.

The government contends Thompson is refusing to cooperate and that there’s no connection between his ailment and his ability to explain where the coins are.

A federal law addresses individuals like Thompson, known as “recalcitrant witnesses.” The law holds that 18 months is generally the limit for jail time for contempt of court orders. But a federal appeals court last year rejected Thompson’s argument that that law applies to him.

Thompson hasn’t just refused to answer questions, the court ruled: He’s also violated the requirement that he “assist” the parties by refusing to execute a limited power of attorney to allow that Belizean trust to be examined, as required under his plea deal.

“The order isn’t intended to solely seek information, it’s to seek information for the purposes of recovering these unique assets,” said law professor and legal analyst Andrew Geronimo, director of Case Western University’s First Amendment Clinic.

Earlier this year, Marbley denied Thompson’s request for release over concerns he’s at risk for contracting the coronavirus behind bars. Marbley said Thompson didn’t present proper evidence for his risk level, and also noted he remains a flight risk.

The investors still looking for their money say Thompson has no one but himself to blame for his incarceration.

“He would be out of prison by now if he had simply complied with his plea agreement and cooperated in locating missing assets when he was supposed to,” attorney Steven Tigges said in a March court filing.

Florida's Messiest Execution

Florida's Messiest Execution On July 8, 1999, the execution of Allen Lee Davis set off a shock wave that rippled around the world. During his time in the electric chair, Davis bled profusely from the nose and suffered burns to his head, leg, and groin area. As the switch was thrown, the “Tiny” Davis, who was executed for the May 11, 1982, murder of Nancy Weiler and her two daughters, reared back against the restraints, giving witnesses a chilling glimpse under a black hood designed to hide the faces of the condemned. Blood poured from his vivid purple nose, ran down the wide leather strap that covered his mouth and soaked the white shirt. After the power was turned off, Davis was still alive. Witnesses said his chest rose and fell about 10 times before he went still. After the execution, state prison officials and Governor Jeb Bush said the Old Sparky functioned properly. Three photos of the incident have been published on Florida’s High Court official website in an attempt to argu...

11 SIGNS YOU’RE IN A BAD RELATIONSHIP (BUT DON’T WANT TO ADMIT IT)

A Poisonous relationship can alter our perception. You can spend many years thinking you’re worthless. But you’re not worthless. You’re underappreciated.” – Steve Maraboli Being in a bad or toxic relationship is often something that we don’t realize that we’re in until we’re out of it. Bad relationships can invade every other aspect of our lives, from our friendships to our family relationships. They can make you feel depressed or anxious for no reason. Marriage & family therapist and author Darlene Lancer, JD, MFT says, “Healthy relationships nourish and support us. A toxic relationship, on the other hand, is like poison to us — instead of lifting us up, it makes us feel worse. When it ends, we might experience post-traumatic stress or a lessening of self-esteem and trust in ourselves and others.” When you’re in a bad relationship, you’re probably ignoring all the signs – it’s what we do as humans to protect ourselves. If you’re in a toxic relationship, you may notice th...

Annie Lee Cooper, The Black Activist John Lewis Revered As ‘Absolutely Fearless’

Annie Lee Cooper, The Black Activist John Lewis Revered As ‘Absolutely Fearless’ From marching with Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma to socking a racist cop for trying to keep her from the polls, Annie Lee Cooper fought for the rights of Black Americans with ferocity. In January 1965, an Alabama woman named Annie Lee Cooper lined up at her county courthouse to vote. This was not her first attempt, as she had been turned away from the polls just two years earlier. And after failing the impossible literacy tests made to keep Black people from the ballot box, Cooper decided that this time would be different. When a notoriously racist cop named Jim Clark began to demand that she abandon her spot in line, Cooper did her best to ignore him. But when he poked her in the neck with his billy club, Cooper took action — and punched him square in the face. The stunt nearly cost her her life and she was almost charged with attempted murder, but today her scuffle is remembered as courageous. As n...

How I Missed My Future Husband” – Nigerian Lady (Photo)

I checked in for my flight that cold misty morning… After surviving a break failure… (story for another day) It was drizzling. This raining season must have been heart broken and is taking out its anger on mankind. I wanted to wear something simple, like a very short skirt and sheer top but changed my mind and wore an up and down Ankara peplon top and straight trousers. I even had a Jean jacket in my bag, just incase. The weather ain’t no body’s Friend. After checking in my luggage, I made my way to the departure lounge, with my ticket and ID card in hand. I sat down and brought out my phone to call mum. A few minutes later, I was done with the call. I looked up and saw this guy. Heigod! Usually, I don’t stare at people, no matter how handsome, fine, or gorgeous you are. I look once or twice and look away. Always. But this time, I stared. He had just passed the annoying security check, where you had to remove jewelries and shoes. He wore a black trouser, a light blue polo and a black j...

“A Match Made in Hell”: How Robert Thompson and Jon Venables Became Killers When They Were Just 10 Years Old

"A match made in hell." On February 12, 1993, two 10-year-old boys named Robert Thompson and Jon Venables abducted 2-year-old James Bulger from a shopping center in England.
