A Sikkimese lady carries a British merchant on her back. West Bengal, 1903

There was a claimed that the man was British, that he was the woman’s ‘master’, that he forced the woman to do this, and that he used this woman as a common form of transport. How true could this be?

The initial claim was that this was a ‘Sikkimese woman carrying a British man on her back, West Bengal, India, 1900.’ There were several different versions including one claiming the woman was African. The truth of the matter was that the man was not british. Here is the true story

In his diary he writes about his amazement of the local people who carried the elderly and the young as well as huge amounts of general items in baskets on their backs. The wife of the translator and guide Rodier was using (who he only refers to as Myint-U) during his trip is the woman

in this photograph. Myint-U had claimed that his wife was strong enough to carry Rodier, in which the woman agreed with her husband. With that Rodier had his assistant set up his folding Kodak camera and took a picture of the event, after which she walked with him on her back up the path and back then set him down. A quick note of the event is written on the back of the printed photograph and it’s corroborated in Rodiers personal diaries.

Child from the past. The Röst Girl was the preserved body of a young girl discovered in a bog, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, in 1926. Studies revealed that she lived sometime between 200 BC and 95 AD. She was around three years old when she died and is possibly the youngest bog body ever found to this date. Unfortunately, the body no longer exists. It was destroyed (along with so many other historical artifacts and treasures) during WWII. Only a woolen cloak that was found wrapped around the body remains. The cloak was used to date her remains, sadly I have not found any pictures of this cloak. The cause of her death is not known. He was shot 9 times, including a shot to the head by a squad commander in close proximity to ensure his death. Somehow, he survived and escaped to his village to enjoy the rest of his life.
