An Australian Hoarder Killed A Man Who Broke Into His House — Then Lived With His Corpse For 15 Years

An Australian Hoarder Killed A Man Who Broke Into His House — Then Lived With His Corpse For 15 Years

"He was a very loving man, would do anything for anyone. He didn't deserve what he got."
Shane Snellman disappeared in Sydney, Australia in 2002. He had been in and out of jail for petty theft and struggled with drug addiction, but his family knew him as a kind and caring man.
His body was discovered in 2018 amid piles of trash and luggage in the house of an Australian hoarder who had been dead for a year. A recent police inquest has concluded that the hoarder murdered Snellman, then kept his body for 15 years and allowed it to mummify, masking the smell with air fresheners.

Go inside this grisly crime

The body of Shane Snellman was discovered "completely mummified" with a gunshot wound to the neck. It had been surrounded by 70 bottles of air freshener to mask the smell.

Bruce Andrew Roberts was a wealthy recluse in the Greenwich neighborhood of Sydney, Australia. His property was known as “the creepy house on the corner.” He was a chronic hoarder, and his house was riddled with boxes, broken equipment, newspapers, and trash when he died, at age 60, in 2017.

What neighbors didn’t know was that his house also contained the mummified corpse of a man he had murdered in 2002, according to a recent inquest by the Coroner’s Court of New South Wales.

The victim was 39-year-old Shane Snellman. Placed into a Catholic convent as a child, he was raised across several boys’ homes. Snellman delved into serious crime at age 15 when he allegedly killed a homeless man. He was acquitted, but he struggled with drug use and was in and out of jail as an adult.

Estranged from his family, Snellman had most recently been released from jail in June 2002 after a year-long stint for drug supply. That October, he broke into Roberts’ home and was shot dead. Roberts covered his body with a rug and moved it to a spare bedroom — where it stayed for the next 15 years.

But Snellman wasn’t the only one who would decay in the home.

On July 21, 2017, neighbors called the police to perform a welfare check on Roberts after reporting seeing mail pile up in front of his home. Investigators discovered him dead atop a live heater, decomposing and badly burnt.

“He was an extreme hoarder. I’ve never seen anything like it” Senior Constable Shane Spencer said of Roberts.

“As we walked into the front door of the address, there were immediately items stacked from floor to ceiling. It was evident he never threw anything at all out.”

Finding Snellman would take another year. It was only on May 29, 2018 that cleaners clearing the debris-riddled home for sale discovered his body. They found him with his back against a couch, leaning slightly to the left, with a gunshot wound to the neck.

He was still wearing his clothes from 2002, the last time anyone had seen him alive. A post-mortem at the Sydney Forensic Medicine Department at Lidcombe took DNA samples and determined the body was “completely mummified.”

Tina Xanthos, assistant counsel to the coroner, testified that Roberts had placed more than 70 bottles of air freshener around the body in “a conscious effort to mask the smell” of Snellman’s decomposition. Police had to rely on visible tattoos and remaining fingerprints to identify him.

Police also discovered 19 illegal firearms and exorbitant piles of ammunition in the home, though the inquest could not officially conclude which gun was used on Snellman.

An autopsy yielded 15 metallic fragments in his chest and stomach, while a subsequent toxicology report yielded traces of methamphetamine, buprenorphine, and amphetamines. The inquest described the two deceased Australians as “strangers in life” who suffered a fatal “chance encounter.”

Roberts was born in Coonabarabran in 1956 and grown up in luxury. Raised by wealthy parents, he nonetheless suffered a bad relationship with his sister and began developing mental health issues. His cousin described him as “a bit strange, a loner, socially awkward.”

“No one’s been near the home,” said neighbor Gayle Meagher. “The home would have been fairly bad inside. He had mental issues and was a bit of a recluse. Everything was locked up. You couldn’t see inside the windows. We would just hear him or see him outside always in a big, brown coat regardless of the weather.”

He bought the Greenwich house from his parents and spent his days in leisure. He had inherited more than $1 million in stock shares and had more than $600,000 in the bank when he died.

Now, nearly 20 years after Shane Snellman was last seen by his family, they finally have closure on his tragic death at the hands of Roberts.

His father, John Snellman, said his late son was impulsive but had a good heart. One of his sisters recalled the last time she saw her brother was behind bars, but that he has “never been forgotten.” She said she “screamed and fell to the floor” at news of his death.

Snellman’s niece, Tiana Snellman, said she would remember him as a caring man: “He was a very loving man, would do anything for anyone. He didn’t deserve what he got.”

Taking care of the extraordinary "Mosaico di Orione" (Orion mosaic) from the late II BC - early I BC.

Taking care of the extraordinary "Mosaico di Orione" (Orion mosaic) from the late II BC - early I BC. This amazing piece of art is located in the “House of the Orion”, Pompeii. The “House of Orion” survived with much of its interior preserved. This includes an atrium showing stucco panels of various colours imitating coloured marble comparable to the Egyptian Ptolemaic court, and an exquisite mosaic of Orion, depecting one of the more iconographically obscure myths of the ancient world. The owner of the house must have been greatly attracted to this myth, considering it features in two different rooms in which two different scenes of the myth are depicted. It is a small house which has proved to be an extraordinary treasure chest of art. The Cardiff Giant Fools the Nation, 145 Years Ago

The Cardiff Giant Fools the Nation, 145 Years Ago In 1869, trickster George Hull masterminded one of the 19th century’s most sensational hoaxes: the discovery of a 10-foot-tall giant. The 19th century was a golden age for hoaxes. So when two men found a 10-foot-tall giant buried in Cardiff, New York, thousands of people paid to see it. As headlines reported the discovery, only a small number of dissenters questioned the petrified giant theory.⠀ ⠀ See the photos and learn the the full story of the infamous “Cardiff Giant” by clicking the link in our bio The seed for what would become one of the 19th century’s most elaborate hoaxes first planted itself in George Hull’s mind in 1867. A cigar maker by trade, Hull was also a staunch atheist and skeptic, and during a business trip to Iowa, he became locked in a theological debate with a revivalist preacher. Hull later claimed he was flabbergasted by the preacher’s literalist reading of the Bible, in particular a passage from the Book of Gene...

Everest climber returns to mountain to bury woman he was forced to abandon 9 years ago

Everest climber returns to mountain to bury woman he was forced to abandon 9 years ago In 2007, Ian Woodall, a British climber, returned to Everest to bury the bodies of three climbers he passed on his way to the summit. One of the climbers, a woman named Francys Arsentiev, was still alive when Woodall reached her during his initial ascent. Her first words to him were"don't leave me behind." The grim reality, though, is that Woodall could not have done anything for her without jeopardizing his own life or the lives of his team members. He was forced to leave her to perish alone. Climbing Mount Everest has become much safer over the past decade thanks to advances in technology and climbing gear. Satellite phones allow a climber to stay in contact with base camp to get constant updates on weather systems in the area. A better understanding of exactly what kind and how much gear to take has also caused the death toll to drop dramatically. She was alone on a mountain shelf wh...

Florida's Messiest Execution

Florida's Messiest Execution On July 8, 1999, the execution of Allen Lee Davis set off a shock wave that rippled around the world. During his time in the electric chair, Davis bled profusely from the nose and suffered burns to his head, leg, and groin area. As the switch was thrown, the “Tiny” Davis, who was executed for the May 11, 1982, murder of Nancy Weiler and her two daughters, reared back against the restraints, giving witnesses a chilling glimpse under a black hood designed to hide the faces of the condemned. Blood poured from his vivid purple nose, ran down the wide leather strap that covered his mouth and soaked the white shirt. After the power was turned off, Davis was still alive. Witnesses said his chest rose and fell about 10 times before he went still. After the execution, state prison officials and Governor Jeb Bush said the Old Sparky functioned properly. Three photos of the incident have been published on Florida’s High Court official website in an attempt to argu...
