Man found dead in Amanda Park motel in 2001 positively identified as California man

On September 16, 2001, a young man checked into a motel in Amanda Park, Washington under the name of Lyle Stevik.

The following day, Stevik was found dead in his room. He had used his belt to hang himself in a closet and left a note that simply read “suicide.”

Although after 17 long years the real identity of Lyle Stevik has been finally uncovered by Internet sleuths, the true horror and mystery are still hiding inside the Room 5.

Lyle Stevik (c. 1976 – September 16, 2001) was the alias used by an American man who, in 2001, committed suicide in Amanda Park, Washington, on the Olympic Peninsula. Although his body was quickly discovered, and fingerprints, DNA, and dental information collected and recorded, there were no matches in any databases and his identity remained unknown until 2018.

On May 8, 2018, the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office announced that "Stevik" was identified after almost seventeen years, with assistance through genetic genealogy conducted by the DNA Doe Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to identifying unknown deceased persons. They had found a cluster of matches of relatives, perhaps two to three generations removed, in New Mexico. They were finally able to locate members of his birth family.

The man's family said that Stevik was 25 years old when he died, and he had previously resided in Alameda, California. They had believed that he was estranged from the family. His relatives requested that his identity be withheld for privacy.

The man who identified himself as "Lyle Stevik" checked into the Quinault Inn, a motel in Amanda Park, Washington, on Friday, September 14, 2001, after arriving in the area by bus. The clerk told police that he may have been Canadian as he spoke with what seemed a similar accent. When registering for his room, he entered his alias and provided a false home address, eventually discovered to belong to a Best Western hotel in Meridian, Idaho. The police located that hotel, but none of the staff members recognized photos of the deceased.

Stevik was reportedly seen walking back and forth at the side of a highway near the motel, but it is uncertain if this was before or after he registered and paid for his room. He requested and received a second room after complaining about outside noise.

Stevik may have derived his name from that of "Lyle Stevick", a character from the novel You Must Remember This (1987), written by Joyce Carol Oates. In the story, the character Stevick contemplates suicide.

Located by techniques of genetic genealogy performed by staff and volunteers of the DNA Doe Project in 2018, the man's family had been unaware of his suicide. They believed that he was living a life elsewhere and did not want to speak to them. Due to the estrangement, they had not filed a missing person report. There was no report that appeared to match the decedent.

Stevik hanged himself by his belt from a bar inside a clothes closet. He had left money in the room to cover the remaining two nights of the weekend, together with a note reading, "suicide". He is thought to have died on September 16. His body was found on Monday, September 17. Initial reports stated that Stevik had stayed at the motel for two nights, but his actual arrival date was Friday, September 14, indicating that he had been registered at the hotel for three nights. He paid at the desk for one night's lodging, but said that he planned to stay for "a few more days".

Upon discovery of the body, police reported that the man had closed the blinds in the room and lined the closet in which he hanged himself with pillows. He left a note saying "for the room" at the bedside table, which contained $160 in $20 bills. It has been speculated that he may have taken his own life due to depression or because of a fatal disease, although the autopsy showed no signs of the latter. It was also theorized that the man was native to a non-English speaking country. An investigator said that a piece of paper was located in a trash bin with the word "suicide" written on it, as if he were practicing.

Stevik had no luggage with him; only a toothbrush and toothpaste were found in the room. He wore a blue shirt in a plaid design, a gray T-shirt underneath, blue jeans, and black boots.

Stevik was described as fair-skinned with black hair and green/hazel eyes. The local coroner's office said that he may have also had African-American ancestry, in addition to Native American and Hispanic. DNA analysis concluded he was at least one-quarter Native American and one-quarter Hispanic or Spanish. His teeth showed evidence of earlier treatment with braces. He had an old appendectomy scar. A mole was noted on his chin and he had attached earlobes, a genetic characteristic.

The examination also showed that Stevik had recently lost a large amount of weight, up to 40 pounds (18 kg). The medical examiner estimated this weight difference after noting that the size of the man's jeans was fairly large in comparison to his body.

His age was estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old, giving an estimated birth date from 1971 to 1981. It was also estimated that he might have been around 35 years old, however, so his birth could have been as early as 1966.

The man known as Stevik was later buried in an unmarked grave at the Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen, Washington.

Because Stevik was deceased for only a short time before his body was found, examiners readily obtained his fingerprints, dental characteristics, and DNA. These identifying markers were placed in international databases, including CODIS, but no matches were made. It is believed that he came to the area from Aberdeen or Port Angeles, locations from which buses daily traveled to Amanda Park. He was not, however, recognized by either of the bus drivers. Two men who were missing at the time, Alexander Craig and Steven Needham, were ruled out as possible identities of Stevik.

In April 2007, Stevik was listed as the profile of the month for Missing from the Circle, a public service initiative launched by Lamar Associates, a law enforcement advisory organization based in Washington, D.C., to help solve cases involving missing or unidentified Native Americans.

In 2018, two genetic genealogists from the DNA Doe Project, Colleen M. Fitzpatrick and Margaret Press, uploaded DNA profiles to GEDmatch to attempt to link Stevik to individuals living in Idaho and New Mexico.

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office announced on May 8, 2018, that Stevik had been identified through DNA analysis and comparison with genetic relatives, performed by the DNA Doe Project, in collaboration with Aerodyne and Full Genomes Corporation.

He was from Alameda County, California, and was 25 years old at the time of death. The Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office notified the man's family, who had believed him to be alive and had thought he did not want to associate with his family. His family had a set of his fingerprints that were taken in grade school, as part of a children's identification program. The Sheriff's Department compared those with the postmortem prints taken in 2001, and made a positive identification. To protect his and their privacy, his family has chosen not to identify him publicly.

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying Flaying — better known as “skinning alive” — has a long and grotesque history. Records of the practice exist as far back as the Neo-Assyrian Empire (beginning in 911 B.C.), but it has cropped up in most civilizations at one time or another, including Medieval Europe (where it tended to be used as a punishment for traitors) and in the ritual human sacrifices made by the Aztecs in Mexico (the Aztecs, at least, are believed to have skinned the body after the sacrifice had been made). Various techniques have been utilized in the many different cultures in which flaying has been employed, but the basis remains the same: Slowly, excruciatingly slicing the skin from the body while keeping the victim alive for as long as possible (and when feasible, removing the skin intact). Rendering Of Flaying Wikimedia Commons Carvings from the Assyrian period show the process beginning with incisions to the thighs or buttocks, while the European method — pictured...

The shocking photos of syphilis victims before penicillin

The shocking photos of syphilis victims before penicillin Pre penicillin era - Congenital syphilis. This is what happened when a woman with syphilis gave birth. Syphilis was one of the most horrendous illnesses in history, beginning as weeping sores around the genitals, followed by a rash that covered the entire body. The second stage involved flu-like symptoms and sores that looked like warts on the mouth and genitals. At this stage the patient is at their most contagious. Then, a slight reprieve as the symptoms began to clear and the disease remained dormant for up to a year. It must have been such a relief. But while the outward symptoms might have disappeared, this stage heralded the onset of the inner symptoms, as the bones, heart, nerves and brain were attacked. Then came the most terrifying stage of all; the tertiary stage of the sexually transmitted disease where painful ulcers appeared on the face, and as the sores got deeper, the flesh dropped away, leaving deep craters. Death of Georgia Teen Found in Gym Mat Was 'Weird Accident,' Sheriff In 2013, the body of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson was found upside down in a standing, rolled-up gym mat in a Georgia high school. Police initially ruled his death an accident, but the teenager's parents suspected a cover-up. A second autopsy later showed blunt-force trauma — and a few missing organs. On January 11, 2013, the body of Kendrick Johnson (October 10, 1995 – January 10, 2013) was discovered inside a vertical rolled-up mat in the gymnasium of Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia, United States, where he was a student. After a preliminary investigation and autopsy concluded that Johnson's death was accidental, his family had a private pathologist conduct a second autopsy which concluded that he died from blunt force trauma. On October 31, 2013, the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia announced that his office would open a formal review into Johnson's death. On June 20,...

Inside The Mysterious Disappearance Of Connie Converse, The Original Singer-Songwriter

Inside The Mysterious Disappearance Of Connie Converse, The Original Singer-Songwriter Connie Converse wrote and performed trailblazing music in the 1950s, but one day in 1974, she drove off looking for a fresh start — and was never seen again. Folk musician Connie Converse was ahead of her time. A witty, wistful lyricist who reveled in her isolation as much as she lamented it, she's praised by many to this day as history's first modern singer-songwriter. Sadly, however, she never got to enjoy the acclaim she now receives — because she mysteriously vanished in 1974 and was never seen again. Depressed, disillusioned, and frustrated after her attempts to launch a music career proved unsuccessful, Converse had gradually stopped writing music at all, and her letters to her family hinted at her deep loneliness. "Human society fascinates me and awes me and fills me with grief and joy; I just can't find my place to plug into it," she wrote to her brother in 1974. In ...

Meet the woman who gave the world antiviral drugs

Born in 1918 in Manhattan, Gertrude Elion developed the drug acyclovir, a potent inhibitor of herpes viruses with remarkably low toxicity, which her team unveiled in 1978. Fifty years ago, few scientists believed a drug could fight viruses with low side effects. Then Gertrude Elion showed the doubters "what I could do on my own." When news broke in April that the drug remdesivir had been shown to speed recovery in patients hospitalized with COVID-19, Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, hailed the finding as “an important proof of concept” in the race to bring the pandemic to heel. Unlike a vaccine, which prompts the body to mount a defense against invading viruses, remdesivir is an antiviral drug, which hampers the ability of a virus to replicate and spread. For now, results related to remdesivir are mixed, although some studies continue to suggest the drug can improve outcomes for patients with severe forms of COVID-19. ...
