Photos of the Bombing of Dresden Germany During World War II

Valentine's Day.

This picture is connected to the previous post about the Dresden bombing which occured on 13 - 15 February, 1945. Yes, it was Valentine's Day back then aswell.

The picture shows a couple found in a shelter during the clean up of the city, they died in each other's arms during the bombing.

A reminder that not everything was peace and joy(still isn't) during this particular day.
No more words needed, the picture speaks for itself.

On the morning of 14 February 431 United States Army Air Force bombers of the Eighth Air Force's 1st Bombardment Division were scheduled to bomb Dresden near midday, and the 457 aircraft of 3rd Bombardment Division were to follow to bomb Chemnitz, while the 375 bombers of the 2nd Bombardment Division would bomb a synthetic oil plant in Magdeburg. Another 84 bombers would attack Wesel.

The bomber groups were protected by 784 North American P-51 Mustangs of the Eighth Air Force's VIII Fighter Command, 316 of which covered the Dresden attack - a total of almost 2,100 Eighth Army Air Force aircraft over Saxony during 14 February.

Primary sources disagree as to whether the aiming point was the marshalling yards near the centre of the city or the centre of the built-up urban area. The report by the 1st Bombardment Division's commander to his commander states that the targeting sequence was the centre of the built-up area in Dresden if the weather was clear. If clouds obscured Dresden but Chemnitz was clear, Chemnitz was the target. If both were obscured, they would bomb the centre of Dresden using H2X radar.

The mix of bombs for the Dresden raid was about 40 per cent incendiaries—much closer to the RAF city-busting mix than the USAAF usually used in precision bombardment. Taylor compares this 40 per cent mix with the raid on Berlin on 3 February, where the ratio was 10 per cent incendiaries. This was a common mix when the USAAF anticipated cloudy conditions over the target.

316 B-17 Flying Fortresses bombed Dresden, dropping 771 tons of bombs.[72][73] The remaining 115 bombers from the stream of 431 misidentified their targets. Sixty bombed Prague, dropping 153 tons of bombs, while others bombed Brüx and Pilsen. The 379th bombardment group started to bomb Dresden at 12:17, aiming at marshalling yards in the Friedrichstadt district west of the city centre, as the area was not obscured by smoke and cloud. The 303rd group arrived over Dresden two minutes after the 379th and found their view obscured by clouds, so they bombed Dresden using H2X radar. The groups that followed the 303rd (92nd, 306th, 379th, 384th and 457th) also found Dresden obscured by clouds, and they too used H2X. H2X aiming caused the groups to bomb with a wide dispersal over the Dresden area. The last group to attack Dresden was the 306th, and they finished by 12:30.

Strafing of civilians has become a traditional part of the oral history of the raids, since a March 1945 article in the Nazi-run weekly newspaper Das Reich claimed this had occurred. Historian Götz Bergander, an eyewitness to the raids, found no reports on strafing for 13–15 February by any pilots or the German military and police. He asserted in Dresden im Luftkrieg (1977) that only a few tales of civilians being strafed were reliable in detail, and all were related to the daylight attack on 14 February. He concluded that some memory of eyewitnesses was real, but that it had misinterpreted the firing in a dogfight as deliberately aimed at people on the ground. In 2000, historian Helmut Schnatz found an explicit order to RAF pilots not to strafe civilians on the way back from Dresden. He also reconstructed timelines with the result that strafing would have been almost impossible due to lack of time and fuel.

Frederick Taylor in Dresden (2004), basing most of his analysis on the work of Bergander and Schnatz, concludes that no strafing took place, although some stray bullets from aerial dogfights may have hit the ground and been mistaken for strafing by those in the vicinity. The official historical commission collected 103 detailed eyewitness accounts and let the local bomb disposal services search according to their assertions. They found no bullets or fragments that would have been used by planes of the Dresden raids.

On 15 February, the 1st Bombardment Division's primary target—the Böhlen synthetic oil plant near Leipzig—was obscured by clouds, so its groups diverted to their secondary target, Dresden. Dresden was also obscured by clouds, so the groups targeted the city using H2X. The first group to arrive over the target was the 401st, but it missed the city centre and bombed Dresden's southeastern suburbs, with bombs also landing on the nearby towns of Meissen and Pirna. The other groups all bombed Dresden between 12:00 and 12:10. They failed to hit the marshalling yards in the Friedrichstadt district and, as in the previous raid, their ordnance was scattered over a wide area.

It is not possible to describe! Explosion after explosion. It was beyond belief, worse than the blackest nightmare. So many people were horribly burnt and injured. It became more and more difficult to breathe. It was dark and all of us tried to leave this cellar with inconceivable panic. Dead and dying people were trampled upon, luggage was left or snatched up out of our hands by rescuers. The basket with our twins covered with wet cloths was snatched up out of my mother's hands and we were pushed upstairs by the people behind us. We saw the burning street, the falling ruins and the terrible firestorm. My mother covered us with wet blankets and coats she found in a water tub.

We saw terrible things: cremated adults shrunk to the size of small children, pieces of arms and legs, dead people, whole families burnt to death, burning people ran to and fro, burnt coaches filled with civilian refugees, dead rescuers and soldiers, many were calling and looking for their children and families, and fire everywhere, everywhere fire, and all the time the hot wind of the firestorm threw people back into the burning houses they were trying to escape from.

I cannot forget these terrible details. I can never forget them

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying

History’s Worst Execution Methods: Flaying Flaying — better known as “skinning alive” — has a long and grotesque history. Records of the practice exist as far back as the Neo-Assyrian Empire (beginning in 911 B.C.), but it has cropped up in most civilizations at one time or another, including Medieval Europe (where it tended to be used as a punishment for traitors) and in the ritual human sacrifices made by the Aztecs in Mexico (the Aztecs, at least, are believed to have skinned the body after the sacrifice had been made). Various techniques have been utilized in the many different cultures in which flaying has been employed, but the basis remains the same: Slowly, excruciatingly slicing the skin from the body while keeping the victim alive for as long as possible (and when feasible, removing the skin intact). Rendering Of Flaying Wikimedia Commons Carvings from the Assyrian period show the process beginning with incisions to the thighs or buttocks, while the European method — pictured...

Florida's Messiest Execution

Florida's Messiest Execution On July 8, 1999, the execution of Allen Lee Davis set off a shock wave that rippled around the world. During his time in the electric chair, Davis bled profusely from the nose and suffered burns to his head, leg, and groin area. As the switch was thrown, the “Tiny” Davis, who was executed for the May 11, 1982, murder of Nancy Weiler and her two daughters, reared back against the restraints, giving witnesses a chilling glimpse under a black hood designed to hide the faces of the condemned. Blood poured from his vivid purple nose, ran down the wide leather strap that covered his mouth and soaked the white shirt. After the power was turned off, Davis was still alive. Witnesses said his chest rose and fell about 10 times before he went still. After the execution, state prison officials and Governor Jeb Bush said the Old Sparky functioned properly. Three photos of the incident have been published on Florida’s High Court official website in an attempt to argu...

Man from Windsor has 'record-breaking' kidneys removed

A man has had both his kidneys removed after they enlarged to what surgeons said was "record-breaking" size. Warren Higgs, 54, underwent a two-hour operation to remove the organs weighing 35kg (77lb) in total. The father-of-one, who has polycystic kidney disease (PKD), said his surgeons told him that "in every single way you measure it" he had set a new record with the size of his heaviest kidney. He said the difference in the size of his stomach was "remarkable". Mr Higgs, from Windsor, said his larger right kidney weighed around 15kg (33lb) with an additional 5kg (11b) of fluid on top. The previous heaviest kidney in the world was believed to be a 7.4kg (16.3lb) kidney removed in India. He said: "The surgeon had confirmed it all, and yes we've beaten it [the record] in every single way you measure it. "I've beaten it when you measure it, when you weigh it with the fluid in - and with the fluid taken out. "It's not something I...

Killer who was 13 when he beat boy, 4, to death with a rock quietly released from

When a 4-year-old boy named Derrick Robie was found brutally murdered in Savona, New York in August 1993, residents were stunned. They assumed that a stranger driving through Savona must have killed young Derrick, as he was beloved in the town. Some locals had even called him the "unofficial mayor" because he loved to sit on his bike and wave at passersby. A manhunt quickly ensued, and authorities were shocked when they uncovered the true perpetrator: a 13-year-old boy named Eric Smith. Marlene Heskell, a friend of Eric's family, had grown suspicious that the young teen had witnessed the murder when he started asking her about DNA testing and what would happen if Derrick's killer had been another child. Heskell went to Eric's mother with her concerns, and the two women took him to the police station to speak with investigators. They assumed that Eric had been threatened to keep quiet by whoever had murdered Derrick — but they never imagined that the teen would ...

When Jim Carrey once attempted to stay in Room 217 of Colorado's

When Jim Carrey once attempted to stay in Room 217 of Colorado's ... When Jim Carrey once attempted to stay in Room 217 of Colorado's Stanley Hotel, he only lasted three hours before fleeing. The room's legacy of horror began in 1974, when novelist Stephen King was inspired to write "The Shining" after a nightmarish stay there. To this day, visitors say that the Stanley and especially Room 217 are just as haunted as "The Shining" would have you believe. Step inside the haunting halls of the Shining hotel and discover the real-life horror — In October 1974, ascendant horror writer Stephen King and his wife spent a night at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, at the foot of the Rockies. With the winter barrage of snow and cold looming, the hotel was about to close for the season, leaving King and his wife as its sole guests. After King ate in a grand yet empty dining room — with the chairs up on every table except his own — and walked th...

When Teddy Roosevelt Was Shot in 1912, a Speech May Have Saved His Life

When Teddy Roosevelt Was Shot in 1912, a Speech May Have Saved His Life While on the campaign trail in October 1912, Teddy Roosevelt was shot in the chest from 5 feet away, instead of going to the hospital, he insisted on speaking to the crowd- which he did for nearly an hour and a half  Teddy Roosevelt cheated death numerous times throughout his life, but he perhaps came closest to meeting the grim reaper on October 14, 1912, when he survived an assassination attempt in Milwaukee. Roosevelt was campaigning for a third term as president of the United States under the Bull Moose Party, and he was climbing into his car to head to a campaign speech when John F.  Schrank shot him in the chest from no more than five feet away. Roosevelt reached into his shirt and felt a dime-sized bullet hole in his chest, but he wasn't coughing up blood or having trouble breathing — so he ordered his driver to take him to his speech anyway. It had actually been the 50-page speech that Roosevelt...

Archaeologists Just Stumbled Across An Unexploded Civil War Artillery Shell At Gettysburg

Archaeologists Just Stumbled Across An Unexploded Civil War Artillery Shell At Gettysburg Though the shell was destroyed, historians suspect that it was fired by Confederate forces on July 2, 1863. While sweeping the grounds of Gettysburg National Military Park as part of a rehabilitation project, an archaeologist detected something buried beneath the earth with his metal detector — and two feet down, he came across a 10-pound artillery shell from the Civil War. Realizing that it was likely live, he laid it down on the ground gently, snapped a photo, and "ran for the hills." Experts then visited the park to examine the 160-year-old ordnance, and after identifying it as a Burton round likely fired by Confederate troops from a Parrott cannon or 3-inch ordnance rifle during the Battle of Gettysburg, they swiftly destroyed it as a safety measure — read more at the link in our profile. While sweeping the grounds of Gettysburg National Military Park as part of a rehabilitation ...

Victim’s daughter persuaded serial killer to admit slaying 5 other women

Victim’s daughter persuaded serial killer to admit slaying 5 other women Serial killer Richard Cottingham is talking. My grandma was a serial killer’s victim. Richard Cottingham claimed responsible for two more Rockland deaths, adding to his total close to 100 The 75-year-old, who claims he is responsible for close to 100 killings and became known as the "Torso Killer" and the "Times Square Killer" for mainly targeting prostitutes, is talking to victims' families and an author who specializes in serial killers about how he murdered additional women, including at least two in Rockland. Lorraine McGraw, a 26-year-old mother, was killed by Cottingham in 1970, prosecutors say. McGraw's granddaughter, Sonia Ruiz McGraw of Queens, said Cottingham had promised to detail her grandmother's death and how he knew her. But Rockland law enforcement officials say facts do not support his other claim. Goodarzi was found dead alongside another unidentified ...
