Scalping is something many associate with Native Americans of the old west.

The truth is, scalping occured on many places. We have traces of scalping in other parts of the world dating back thousands of years, there is no clear answer to where the practice originated from, even if it was most common in North America. 

An example is from the Greek historian Herodotus, in 440 B.C. he wrote about Scythian soldiers scalping their enemies. 

The Scythian warriors would behead their dead enemies, scalp them and hang the scalps on the bridle of their horses as a token of status and valor.

The more scalps the better. 

If we look at North America, both Native Americans and white settlers scalped each other, the difference is that the settlers sometimes got paid for it.

As an example, during the Gold Rush in California, bounties were offered for Native American heads, scalps, or ears. This lead to thousands of innocent Natives murdered.

Another example is in Massachusetts 1723, the colony paid 100 pounds sterling for the scalps of men older than 12 and 50 for those of women and children. 

In this photo from 1874 we see a scene that Thomas Millman, physician to the North American Boundary Commission, described in his diary of his experiences while in the West. 

His own words:

"We met with Boswell & Dawson & the photographers. They were getting the photo of some dead Indians. They appear to be Crow Indians killed last winter by the Pegans. About 20 altogether were riddled with bullet holes & every one scalped. Most of them had their shirts & every one had a gash in their side. Bodies were shrivelled up but skin pretty sound".
