Fraudsters Steal N784m in Bitcoin Dating App Scam

A new report has disclosed that fraudsters have been able to steal $1.4 million through Apple’s Developer Enterprise Program

The dating app scam involved gaining the trust of victims through the dating apps then convincing them to install fake crypto apps

So far, users from Asia, Europe, and the U.S have fallen victim to this scam

A new report has disclosed that scammers have been able to rip victims off $1.4 million (N784m) in a dating app scam.

The scam was carried out by luring people to download fake cryptocurrency apps and investing money using Apple’s Developer Enterprise program.

According to a Sophos report which was published on Wednesday, the scam is been dubbed CryptoRom and has caused many iPhone users to lose money to the fraudsters.

Research by Sophos disclosed the crooks behind the giant fraud targeted iOS users using Apple’s ad hoc distribution method.

Many of the stories of the scam were highly publicized, with a particular victim from the UK losing ($87,000) after falling in love with a scammer.

Other stories involved the hackers breaking into people’s accounts to steal a large amount of money.

The scam mostly starts with victims being contacted by the scammers through fake profiles on social media and dating apps.

As the conversation goes on, the victims are introduced to cryptocurrency investment where they are convinced to install a crypto trading app.

Once victims deposits deposit a large sum of money on the trading app, the scammers get access to it and withdraw.

According to the report, the bitcoin address of the scammers has received more than 1.39 million dollars so far.
