In August 2020, Michael Turney was arrested and charged with killing his teenage stepdaughter Alissa two decades earlier — and it was all thanks to a viral TikTok campaign.

Alissa Turney was just 17 when she vanished without a trace in 2001 after ostensibly leaving a note saying that she was running away to California.

But as the years progressed, both her sister Sarah and the police began to suspect that something far more sinister had happened.

They eventually discovered that Michael had obsessively filmed Alissa for years with a secret home surveillance system.

But when investigators sought to access the footage from the day she vanished, he first told them that he'd reviewed the footage and didn't see anything noteworthy on it and refused to give it up.

Then he said the footage didn't exist. But without a body, investigators didn't have enough evidence to arrest him — so they told Sarah to spread the word on social media.
