An Ancient Roman Shrine Surrounded By Offerings Was Just Discovered In The Swiss Alps

A Hiker went for a trek in the Alps--- Stumbled upon a Roman Shrine with 2,000 year old offerings

Archaeologists have found 100 coins that may have been left as offerings as well as brooches, nails, crystals, and more.

On a summer day in 2020, a trail enthusiast was hiking in the Swiss Alps between the Ammertenhorn and Wildstrubel mountains, some 8,500 feet above sea level, when he spotted something on the ground — that turned out to be an ancient Roman coin. Over the next few years, archeologists visited the site and unearthed 100 of these coins, plus 27 rock crystals, 59 Roman shoe nails, a brooch, and a fragmented votive plaque shaped like a leaf. Now, experts believe the site may have been an ancient shrine to the mountain gods. Learn more about this remarkable discovery by clicking the link in our profile.

On a summer day in 2020, a trail enthusiast hiking through the Swiss Alps spotted something on the ground — an ancient Roman coin. This discovery led to a veritable treasure trove, and archaeologists believe that the hiker inadvertently discovered a Roman shrine.

In a plateau between the Ammertenhorn and Wildstrubel mountains, some 8,500 feet above sea level, archaeologists investigating the hiker’s find uncovered 100 coins, 27 rock crystals, 59 Roman shoe nails, a brooch, and a fragmented votive plaque shaped like a leaf.

“We are only at the beginning of the investigations, but we think it is a holy place, where people went to deposit votive offerings — mainly coins, but also other objects — asking the deities for things or thanking them,” Regula Gubler, an archaeologist from the Education and Culture Directorate of the Canton of Berns told Newsweek. “I guess a kind of pilgrimage.”

The location of the suspected shrine, Gubler explained, as well as the number of coins and other objects found there, suggested that ancient people may have looked upon the site as a place to worship mountain gods.

“It cannot be ruled out that the high plateau between the Ammertenhorn and the Wildstrubel massif, visible from afar, was a sacred place,” agreed the Canton of Bern and the Bernisches Historisches Museum in a statement.

The coins found at the site date between the first century C.E. and the fifth century C.E., roughly mirroring the rise and fall of the ancient Roman Empire. Gubler told Newsweek that they don’t appear to be a hidden cache or someone’s lost treasure, left all at once, but instead to have been distributed by people throughout the ages.

“It is always hard to give a value, but they are basically all small change — so not worth a lot and ‘easy’ to give away to the deities,” Gubler explained. “Our coin specialist says the range of the assemblage of coins is not a lost wallet or someone’s treasure, it fits much better with coins deposited in temples over a longer period of time.”

Aside from the majestic location, Gubler and other archaeologists also suspect that ancient Romans chose to worship at the site because of the abundance of rock crystals found nearby.

“The rock crystals we found occur naturally up there but may be part of the reason the location was considered significant/auspicious,” Gubler explained to Newsweek.

In addition, the nearby town of Thun also contains several Roman temples, as well as an inscription discovered in 1926 about mountain goddesses. “The Latin inscription that it bears tells us that it had been offered by the local population and dedicated to the goddesses of the Alps,” the Canton of Bern and the Bernisches Historisches Museum explained.

Both Gubler and the Canton of Bern and the Bernisches Historisches Museum emphasized the significance of this shrine. While other shrines have been discovered at the bottom of mountains, this one would have taken significant effort to reach as it is far from both the road and hiking trails.

“By depositing their offerings, the faithful came into contact with these deities, for example, to earn their favor, to thank them, or to ask them to grant a wish,” the Canton of Bern and the Bernisches Historisches Museum explained in their statement.

“The findings of the Ammertenhorn shed new light on the element of statuary found a long time ago in Allmendingen,” they added. “People went to sacred places located not only at the gateway to the Alps but also in the high mountains.”

A Very Victorian Two-Penny Hangover

During the Great Depreciation in London, people who couldn’t afford to sleep in a bad could pay twopence for a spot on a bench with a clothesline tied in front of them, so they could sleep while hanging over a rope . The term ‘hangover’ is universally understood to mean the disproportionate suffering that comes after a night of over-indulgence. But where does the term actually come from? One possible explanation is, somewhat strangely, Victorian England. During the Victorian era the practice of paying for a ‘two-penny hangover’ was incredibly popular among the country’s homeless population and the term ‘two penny hangover’ was so commonly used that it made its way into contemporary literature. A two-penny hangover is not the description of a very cheap night out, nor is it the amount it would cost you to get drunk in Victorian England. It is actually somewhere you could go to sleep if you were one of the thousands of homeless and destitute living in the country’s main cities at the tim...

There are lots of gory stuff going on in the dark web

There are lots of gory stuff going on in the dark web. There was a site where people commit suicide and video themselves doing it, even they have people who teach you how best to commit suicide by hanging and where to place your camera for live feed of the suicide. Then there's another for necrophilia where people go to the morgue to have sex with dead people. Some go as far as digging up fresh graves of people to have sex with the dead bodies. One dissected a female body and put his dick inside the pussy and you can see his dick as he's fucking the dead body cos he removed the whole intestines. Many unthinkable activities going on there. You can also buy stolen credit cards and so on. Oh, and also a place where you can sell your skin. If your skin is clean and spotless, you can sell it at an outrageous price. They use the skin to manufacture bags, shoes, sandals and other leather materials which are bought by some rich individuals. The site is for some people who would like to...

Anatoly Onoprienko - Facts, Childhood, Crimes & Death of Ukrainian Serial

Anatoly Onoprienko - Facts, Childhood, Crimes & Death of Ukrainian Serial Anatoly Onoprienko, known as ‘The Terminator’ and ‘Citizen O’ was a Ukrainian serial killer responsible for at least 52 murders spanning from 1989-1996. Onoprienko was notorious for massacring entire families seemingly at random. The killings followed a set pattern. He chose an isolated house and gained the attention of the occupants by creating a commotion. He would then kill all occupants starting with the adult male, before going to find and kill the spouse and finally the children. He would then usually set the buildings alight in an attempt to cover his tracks. He would also kill any witness unlucky enough to cross his path during his murderous rampages. Onoprienko was eventually convicted and sentenced to death. His death sentence later commuted to life without parole, Onoprienko died in prison of a heart attack in 2013. The Boy With Two Heads

In 1783, a boy was born with two heads. The second head was upside down, with the neck pointed straight up. Shockingly, the second head was fully functional. The boy claimed he could hear the other brain telling him things In May of 1783, the “Two-Headed Boy of Bengal” was born into a family of peasants. The midwife assisting the boy’s mother was horrified with his appearance and immediately chucked the newborn into a fire. Fortunately, he suffered only a few burns and managed to survive. His survival and the fact that only two out of 5,000,000 babies are born with this condition — with a majority dying immediately after birth — made him a medical marvel. Fame The boy’s parents exploited his condition. After his burns healed, he was immediately exhibited in Calcutta, earning his family a pretty penny If no one paid, the boy would be completely hidden in a piece of cloth for hours on end. He was more a prop than a son. As news of the boy spread across India, wealthier patrons arranged f...

True Story; My Experience At First Bank Automated Machine Stand

Yesterday, I went to First Bank to use the ATM I got there and looked around and joined the long queue. A young lady came to meet me and asked how much I wanted to withdraw.   She said she over withdrew money; She was supposed to withdraw 3k but mistakenly pressed 30k. She will give me 20k cash, I will transfer it to her account. This is what shocked me; I have been standing on the queue for approximately 5mins and I never saw this Lady around that ATM, she wasn't on the queue, she never made any withdrawal. Which ATM did she use in getting the 30k?  I told her I will wait for my turn, she left my side, I asked the man in my front, did you see this lady around? I wanted to point her but the Lady had disappeared, I didn't see her again.  I told the man what she said and he laughed and said it is an old logic. They come with fake naira notes claiming they mistakenly pressed and withdraw the wrong amount  When you are in a hurry to leave the long queue, you transfer the...
