New photos show ship in Lake Charlevoix once used by Al Capone
An underwater photographer in Michigan's Lake Charlevoix just captured eerie images of the wreck of a floating speakeasy allegedly run by Al Capone. Approximately 200 feet long and two stories tall, the Keuka housed a bar, dance hall, casino, and even a roller-skating rink.
And though there's no paper trail connecting Capone to the boat, local histories claim that the infamous gangster's involvement with this raucous party vessel was an open secret during the final years of Prohibition.
CHARLEVOIX COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- New photos have been released of a ship at the bottom of Lake Charlevoix that was once used by Al Capone during the prohibition era.
Diver Lee Rosenberg and underwater photographer Chris Roxburgh swam along the Keuka Shipwreck on Monday and took multiple photos.
Roxburgh described the Shallow Shipwreck as a rare experience.
Roxburgh said that having this 200-foot barge still intact after sinking almost a century ago is an impressive sight.
"You can just kind of envision what may have been going on there, the dance scene, the bar, I heard there was even gambling on it as well," Roxburgh said.
Roxburgh also said that for anyone who is interested in seeing the barge itself, it's shallow enough to snorkel across the top during the summer months.
